Rules Q&A
- Q: Mantis Player has a sizeable force. Ronin player has unbowed Tamago. Chuuna bows and targets Tamago. Mantis player declares attack and assigns peeps. Ronin player uses Strike Quickly w/ Tamago. Tamago moves in, bows from Chuuna. ...
(C)an I use Strike Quickly with Tamago and use his ability, or no?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Costs_and_restr ... ermissions: "A permission does not break rules that it doesn't specifically refer to.
"Example: 'Your target Infantry Personality may assign in Cavalry Maneuvers' does not allow a bowed unit to assign."
Similarly, being allowed to take an action to use a base ability does not mention "even if bowed", so it doesn't override that rule. Zen Faulkes, "Moshi Chuuna vs Strike Quickly", 2 Mar 2011 - Q: With Koun's errata will Chuuna circumvent his text since her ability is a limited action and the bowing takes place during assignment? I was under the impresstion that since she targets during the Limited phase, he misses his window to react since his ability works during a battle.
At least that's how I thought it would work. When it came up it in a local game was ruled against me and Kuon was allowed to remain straight.
Maybe I'm just not understanding Kuon's ability?
A: You do understand Kuon correctly. His trait will not save him from being bowed by Chuuna.
His trait triggers when he is targeted during a battle, and it causes the targeting action's effects to not happen. As you said, Chuuna's targeting occurs during the Action Phase, so it would not trigger the trait. Brook Cunningham, "Moshi Chuuna vs Hida Kuon (exp 6)", 15 Feb 2010 - Q: Mirumoto Kondo: Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield, you may bow a Weapon in Kondo's unit: Move your target unit there. If you bowed a Weapon and the unit moved, straighten the unit.
Moshi Chuuna: Limited: Bow Chuuna or one of her Spells: Target a Personality. After the next time this turn he assigns or moves to a battlefield, bow him.
So if Moshi Chuuna targets Mirumoto Kondo with her limited action, and Mirumoto Kondo has a weapon attached; If there is a normal battle where there are enemy units. Can Kondo, from home, activate his ability and end up in the battle unbowed, by paying the optional cost?
I said yes, since the bow effect from Moshi Chuuna would occur when he moves, but owing to the period (.) the straightening would occur after that. Since each sentance and subsequent effect triggering happens one at a time during the effect resolution of the action procedure.
Some of my more vocal Mantis opponents were not convinced.
A: You are correct. Why? Order of effects.
Moshi Chuuna hits Mirumoto Kondo has the delayed effect that activates after he moves.
Mirumoto Kondo uses his ability, bowing a Weapon as the optional cost. He moves to the battlefield. Moshi Chuuna's effect bows him. His unit straightens per his action's text.
He ends up unbowed at the battle. Dan Jacobson, "Mirumoto Kondo vs Moshi Chuuna", 3 Feb 2010 - Q: Given situation:
Player A controls Moshi Chuuna and applies her Limited Action to a target a personality (Moto X, has the Cavalry trait) of Player B. (Limited: Bow Chuuna or one of her Spells: Target a Personality. After the next time this turn he assigns or moves to a battlefield, bow him.)
He then declares an attack and during one of the Battles, (let's assume there are units on both sides) , player B plays Cavalry Tactics, targeting Moto X, who hasn't assigned or moved to a battlefield yet this turn. (Battle: If any enemy units are at the current battlefield: Move your target Cavalry unit there. If it moved, straighten it and gain 2 honor.)
So, what happens exactly ?
That's what I'm assuming (simplified; just the crucial steps):
Effects will be activated in order as per the rules: "If mandatory costs and required targeting have been met, activate the action’s effects in order"
--> At first, the first effect of Cavalry tactics happens: Moto X gets moved to the Battlefield.
Then -as the trigger for Moshi Chuuna's Limited action is triggered now- the following rule kicks in: "Once a triggered action or trait starts, apply all its costs, targeting, and effects in sequence before proceeding, even if another action is under way."
--> Then, Moto X gets bowed due to the triggered action of Chuuna.
After that all the remaining effects of the original action (Cavalry tactics) are activated.
---> At last, Moto X straightens (as he moved) and Player B gains 2 honor.
A: Your interpretation of the sequence is correct.
