Rules Q&A
- Q: Is the Moto Chagatai Exp. 5's controller allowed to bow a unicorn personality despite the fact that Chagatai's trait has not yet been used?
A: No.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Traits: "Traits that are triggered when paying a Gold cost, and whose effects produce Gold, do not have to be triggered when any given Gold cost is paid; they are optional. All other effects of triggered traits are not optional – they must happen if the trigger occurs." (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Governor's Court and Moto Chagatai exp5", 17 Mar 2009 - Q: If my opponent controls a Moto Chagatai exp 5 who has not used his trait this phase, would i gain 2 honor if I activate a Governor's Court, even if he chooses to bow a unicorn clan personality?

Governor's COurt: Bow this card: Produce 2 Gold. Political Open: Even if this card is bowed, bow this card or one of your target Courtiers: Choose another player. He may bow one of his Personalities. If he did not bow a Personality, gain 2 Honor.
Thanks
A: If the bowing is negated, he didn't bow a personality, so you gain 2 honour. Alex Jones, "Governor's Court and Moto Chagatai exp5", 20 May 2008 - Q: At a battlefield my opponent has a Moto Chagatai Exp 5 in his army and only Unicorns. I take my action to destroy one of my Tacticians with Soul of Battle. ... Would the additional cost added by my Soul of Battle's effect be negated by Chagatai's trait if he tries to pay it?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Costs_and_restrict ... d_payments: "Added costs: A cost added to an action becomes a cost of that action when it is taken." That is, it is not longer considered another player's card effect and unaffected by Moto Chagatai's (Exp. 5) trait. Zen Faulkes, "Soul of Battle and Bowing Negation", 13 Apr 2008 - Q: If I target Moto Chagatai Exp. 4 with Furious Assault and he decides to move home, will he go or his trait will keep him in battle?
A: If it's another players action, he stays (and is promptly destroyed by Furious Assault). Traits are not optional. Zen Faulkes, "Furious Assault vs. Moto Chagatai/Shiba Aikune", 24 Mar 2008 - Q: What If I target Shiba Aikune Exp. 3 while he's alone?
A: Same thing. The trait is not optional, and Furious Assault looks for an effect, not a decision. Zen Faulkes, "Furious Assault vs. Moto Chagatai/Shiba Aikune", 24 Mar 2008 - Q: Can one have Moto Chagatai XP 4 and Moto Chagatai XP 5 in play at the same time?
A: No. Per the definition of Unique, "A card with the Unique keyword can not enter play if any player controls a Unique card with the same title." See here.
However, you can overlay Moto Chagatai Exp 5 over Moto Chagatai Exp 4. See Experienced. Doruk Özaydın, "2 Moto Chagatai in play?", 23 Mar 2008 - Q: The following questions are in regard the this post: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=65494
In the above post you cited a whole page. Could you cite the specific line or lines of CR text that applies?
A: I did. I included it in the quotation box. Do "ctrl + F" search of the linked page for "order of simultaneous triggers" and you'll see the exact line I quoted. Martin Lund, "Unfamiliar Ground + Moto Chagatai xp5", 26 Feb 2008 - Q: " If the Unicorn player is Attacking, he gets to choose which Unicorn he wants to save from bowing. If the Unicorn player is Defending, he's probably going to get hosed. "
This quote is taken from the aforementioned post.
Is " hosed" some new type of rules jargon? Can you clarify?
A: "Hosed," vernacular slang - "To be subject to an unfavorable or undesirable outcome without recourse." Martin Lund, "Unfamiliar Ground + Moto Chagatai xp5", 26 Feb 2008 - Q: If the order of simultaneous triggers to an occurrence needs to be determined, the active player determines their order.
A: Cited
If the Unicorn player is Attacking, he gets to choose which Unicorn he wants to save from bowing. If the Unicorn player is Defending, he's probably going to get hosed. Martin Lund, "Unfamiliar Ground + Moto Chagatai xp5", 11 Feb 2008 - Q: There's a new rule in town: "When simultaneous effects caused by a single piece of text create multiple game procedures containing more than one step, each step of each procedure takes place simultaneously, in parallel".
Thanks to this rule, are the following sentences correct please ?
I am a Unicorn Clan player and my opponent is not. I control no Personality, he attacks and is about to destroy a Province where Moto Akikazu (basic) is face-up, I play Imbue Chi's Reaction, performed by Akikazu. Thus Moto Chagatai (Experienced 4) and Moto Chagatai (Experienced 5) are also revealed face-up in my provinces, next to the performing shugenja's province. I follow the normal sequence of five steps to bring them all into play, each step taking place simultaneously. I check both Chagatai's uniqueness during step B : no player controls a Unique card with the same title at that time. I don't pay their Gold cost during step C (Imbue Chi's text). I don't check their uniqueness again during step D so I simultaneously put them into play. I ride to victory.
Thanks for your help.
A: Bringing in two Unique cards with the same name at the same time works just fine. We saw it coming with Isawa's Fire and Imbue Chi when we were debating the issue.
You know, there is nothing keeping you from using Hall of the Ancestors to copying "Unique" trait off of some dead Lion onto Matsu Aoiko while you have Matsu Aoiko XP (who is already unique) in play either. Martin Lund, "Imbue Chi and uniqueness", 7 Feb 2008 - Q: If my opponent uses Touch of Ice can I use Moto Chagatai Exp5's trait to negate the bowing of one or both of the personalities I choose?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Moto Chagatai Exp5 & Touch of Ice", 22 Aug 2007 - Q: If I choose to bow two personalities then negate the bowing with Chagatai will he get the honor from Touch of Ice or not?
A: Will. Touch of Ice checks not for a decision, but whether bowing actually happened. Zen Faulkes, "Moto Chagatai Exp5 & Touch of Ice", 22 Aug 2007 - Q: If Moto Chagatai xp5 is the only personality in an army, and he is dishonorable and then targeted by a Hunting the Prophet, does he then bow?
A: Yes. There are two bowing effects; his trait only catches the first. Zen Faulkes, "Hunting the Prophet + dishonorable Moto Chagatai (Exp 5)", 16 Aug 2007 - Q: The new (SE) rule book seems to imply that I can bring out several experienced versions of the same personality without overlaying them, therefor having a Moto Chagatai exp 1, exp 2, and exp 4 in play, as separate personalities. Is this correct?
A: You need to be more specific about what text you feel "implies" this.
I see the Unique rules as still being very clear: "A card with the Unique keyword can not enter play if any player controls a Unique card with the same title." Comprehensive Rules: Glossary - Unique
And the Experienced rules close any loop-hole about cards that change names as they gain Experience: "Unique Experienced cards still follow the rules for entering play that apply to Unique cards (see Glossary, Unique). Keep in mind that an Experienced card's alternate title also regulates his or her capacity to enter play." Comprehensive Rules: Glossary - Experienced Martin Lund, "experienced personalities", 7 Aug 2007 - Q: Is Moto Chagatai from Khan Defiance legal in Samurai?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Samurai-Legal_Cards Zen Faulkes, "Khan legality", 6 Jul 2007
