Rules Q&A
- Q: Can a shugenja attach more than one copy of the same spell? If so, can the shugenja cast each copy separately?
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 17 Feb. 2004", 19 Feb 2004 - Q: Hello again everyone,
If I have no units in a battle, I'm obviously allowed to play a card like "Superior Tactics" to move another unit into this battle (because my action creates presence).
In the same situation, can I play "Mushin" and then do something like "Superior Tactics"? As long as my first action creates the presence necessary for my second action, can I do that? Or do I need presence/relevance to play "Mushin" in the first place?
A: You need Presence and Relevance to play Mushin in the first place. Very much like Superior Strategist/Superior Tactics/Deadly Ground, the second action cannot be used to make the first action legal. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 23rd, 2003", 23 Jun 2003 - Q: Sneak/Mushin/Show of Strength/Deadly Ground. Now that's power.
Umm..hey Vaughn...Mushin is a Battle action. So, Sneak/Mushin/Show of Strength/Deadly Ground can't be done, since Show must be the first battle action and all. Just thought I would point that out. :)
A: Curses! Now I have to disassemble that deck...
No, you're exactly right. I was just caught up in the excitement of discovering a new, super secret power combo. I guess I'll just keep playing with the old Secrets/Shame power combo... Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for June 12th", 12 Jun 2003 - Q: Just to check, cause I don't have the current text on Blackened Skies with me (plus, I may be missing something):
If you use Mushin ('cause, remember, official policy is not to answer questions about non-released cards and non-cards) and your first action is Blackened Skies, doesn't your first Ranged Attack of the Blackened Skies "count as" your second Mushin action, thus effectively making the Mushin useless?
A: No. Blackened Sky inserts all its extra actions before Mushin's second. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 November 2002", 15 Nov 2002 - Q: If I play Mushin, then in the first action play Blackened Sky: Is the first Ranged Attack considered as the second action of Mushin or can I play then (after the ranged attacks) another action, let´s say Stand Against the Waves?
A: Blackened Sky gives you a brand new set of extra actions that happen after Mushin's first extra action but before its second. You still get one action after Blackened Sky ends. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 August 2002", 6 Aug 2002 - Q: May one play Mushin when one has no units in a battle?
Sure.
Zen, can you explain the logic behind this?
A: Sure. The logic is faulty. :( You can't play Mushin where you have no units, for the reasons you state. This is a CORRECTION of my erroneous ruling. (I reckon a ruling should be up for more than a day before it's called a reversal.)
"Rules Geek, surrender your medal in shame!" Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 July 2002", 12 Jul 2002 - Q: May one play Mushin when one has no units in a battle?
A: Sure. But the following actions are bound by all the normal restrictions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2002", 11 Jul 2002 - Q: actions like Mushin and Superior Strategist + other actions count as separate actions. So it means each one adds up to the limit, right?
A: Correct.
[Re: Flattery] Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 July 2002", 11 Jul 2002 - Q: Playing the retrieved card is not a new and separate action, so it doesn't pick up the extra cost.
(About hunting tiger) So, if I play a Mushin, I only have to discard a card to play the Mushin, right?
A: Wrong. Mushin gives you fully-fledged extra actions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 June 2002", 13 Jun 2002 - Q: c) If I play Mushin and then play two battle actions, do I only have to discard one card to the Hunting Tiger (for all three actions, as the last two are part of Mushin)?
A: You would need to discard for all three. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 June 2002", 12 Jun 2002 - Q: A) Since Mushin says 2 consecutive actions, I can play Blackened Sky before he can react to the Jagged Earth. I kill his whole army, jump on the table, and yell, "Tsurchi just laid the smackdown on your candy ***!!" or some other wrestling trash talk.
B) The Jagged Earth is negated first, so I have to shoot the followers first.
A: If it weren't for the naval terrain goof, the answer would be B). Mushin doesn't give you two uninterruptable actions. It makes it your "turn" to take a Battle/Open action twice in a row. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 April 2002", 18 Apr 2002 - Q: Can I play Mushin and pass twice?
A: No. Mushin's effect is to give you two consecutive actions, and that's what you do unless you can't. If you can't, they don't count as passing. Jeff Alexander, "post for 15 April 2002", 16 Apr 2002 - Q: Can I play Mushin with a Sneak Attack?
ie: Sneak - Mushin - Frenzy - deadly ground
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 February 2002", 1 Mar 2002 - Q: I am not sure about this anymore. This is the NEW text of blackened sky:
Battle: Take as many consecutive actions that make ranged attacks as you like, before the next player takes an Open or Battle action. You cannot take Reactions during this time unless they make ranged attacks.
I think you can take reactions, because the card says you can.
A: IF those Reactions create Ranged Attacks in and of themselves. The new wording still does not allow Reactions that modify Ranged Attacks. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 February 2002", 7 Feb 2002 - Q: If I play Mushin, Mirumoto Taiu's ranged two, react with Arrows from the Woods...I was argued down that the reaction took up my second action. But the rule book says that "Taking a Reaction does not take up an "action" for determining players' order of acting during the Action Phase or Battle Action Segment."
Could I have used Taiu's ranged four attack?
A: Yes. Mushin gives you two Open/Battle actions in a row. It doesn't preclude you from interspersing Reactions between them as well. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 February 2002", 7 Feb 2002 - Q: I declare an attack against someone, and assign NO units whatsoever. At a battle, can I play Mushin?
A: Nope. No presence, no actions (pg. 53, An Oni's Fury rules). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 December 2001", 25 Dec 2001 - Q: Hi all. New here.
Regarding the above, is it legal to use Storm's wording to "mill" away the cards in your hand? That is, with Storms out, I play an action, but don't bow a Personality or follower. The action is cancelled, and the card goes into the discard.
Obviously, I'll do this when I have something in hand that needs me to discard. A Ring of Void comes to mind. ;)
The other question may be somewhat stupid, but here goes:
Mushin Action * 0G * 2 Focus Battle: Take two consecutive battle actions immediately after this one.
The two consecutive actions *must be* battle actions, right?
A: That is what it says... Jeff Alexander, "replies to 16 June", 20 Jun 2001 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=67578
Clarification: 5 actions after Mushin is played, so six consecutive actions total with Mushin being the first, correct?
A: I think people have different ideas as to what "counts" towards a total. Apparently I have to do the full break-down.
Hazardous Ground in play.
Player's turn to take an action, which Hazardous Ground makes two action opportunities; let's call them A and B.
Opportunity A is used to play Mushin, which creates two more opportunities to play actions; let's call them A1 and A2.
Hazardous Ground affects A1, creating two opportunities; let's call them A1a and A1b.
Hazardous Ground affects A2, creating two opportunities; let's call them A2a and A2b.
To sum up: Actions A (Mushin), A1a, A1b, A2a, A2b, and B. Zen Faulkes, "Hazardous Ground and granted actions", 29 Apr 2008 - Q: I have previously played Hazardous Ground at the current battle. I then play Mushin. Would each of the actions granted by Mushin be affected by Hazardous Ground's text, allowing me to perform 4 actions in total?
A: Yes. Rules Archive (http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/rul ... tion_cards) entry for Hazardous Ground: "Applies to extra actions granted by such cards." Zen Faulkes, "Hazardous Ground and granted actions", 28 Apr 2008
