Rules Q&A
- Q: Also, lets say that the gozoku'd personality is discarded from play and then enters play again later (Jigoku Sensei followed by Musume Mura, for example). They'll enter play unbowed, but will the "cannot unbow" lockdown effect still be in place?
A: Yes. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 December 2004", 8 Dec 2004 - Q: 1) I have a face down Dynasty card in my province and I discard it with Musume Mura. When I flip it up, it turns out to be Bayushi Sharaku. Can I use his reaction?
A: Sharaku says, "Reaction: If you are a Scorpion Clan player, discard a card from another player's Province after discarding Sharaku, or bringing Sharaku into play, from one of your Provinces."
You've got a face-up Sharaku by the time you could use his Reaction ("after discarding Sharaku). I don't think there would be any problem there. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 November 2004", 30 Nov 2004 - Q: Do I have to pick which card I want to get from my discard pile before I discard a card with Musume Mura?
A: Yes. Targeting comes well before you discard anything. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 November 2004", 24 Nov 2004 - Q: For example: If I have a province with a face-down card and I use Musume Mura and discard that card, can I refill the province with the same card that I discarded if it turns out to be a personality that I want??
A: You're out of luck. You had to make a valid choice of targets before you could even consider the play of Musume Mura to be a legal one - hence before you can resolve any of its effects to discard that card. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 November 2004", 24 Nov 2004 - Q: "Limited: Bow Musume Mura to discard a card from one of your Provinces and fill it face-up with a discarded (not dead) Personality from your discard pile."
Since you don't "search" but instead you "fill" with a discarded Personality, does this action target the Personality from your discard pile?
A: Yes. Some times you may have to choose between more than one Personality in the Discard Pile. Since you sometimes have to choose you must ALWAYS target. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 October 2004", 25 Oct 2004 - Q: I hope that this kind of ruling will be resolved with the templating changes. You are using two very similarly worded cards (minus the search part) to do the exact same thing, only one is targeted one is not. It's like having your cake and eating it too. Shrine should be targetted if Mura is targetted, Mura should be search if Shrine is search, there is no fundamental difference in the way the cards work minus 1 word difference, which I assume was simply because it was "intent".
A: Shrine of Fu Leng is an anomaly. There is no good reason for it to use the term "search" in regards to the discard pile, and it was not used intentionally. However, it WAS used, and because it was used, different rules apply to it and it doesn't function the way similar cards that don't use that term function. That is the way it is going to stay, because although it is dissimilar, there is still a definitive way in which it works, and there are no power level issues with that working. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 October 2004", 25 Oct 2004 - Q: The ruling on this was that you have to have a card in a province to activate the Musume Mura. Because during targeting you have to target "a card in one of your provinces." If your Dynasty is empty and you have no cards in provinces then you obviously don't have a target for this action which means you can't take it. At least that was the ruling.
Interesting. Do you have a pointer to this ruling?
I thought it might be the other way (no need to discard if you can't) because it says "discard a card AND fill" rather than "discard a card TO fill" (which would very clearly make the discard a cost).
Does it still count as targeting anyway? I can't normally target a card that isn't in play, and the card doesn't overrule that by stating explicitly that I am targetting.
A: It says "discard a card from one of your Provinces". You need to pick, so targeting is involved, and the card expressly tells you "from one of your Provinces". When a card instructs you to do something that is always illegal, that is explicit permission to break a rule. Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 October 2004", 20 Oct 2004 - Q: Musume Mura (Region)
Limited: Bow Musume Mura to discard a card from one of your Provinces and fill it face-up with a discarded (not dead) Personalitiy from your discard pile.
Can this action be used on an empty province? The wording seems to imply that only the bowing is the cost, 'to' instead of 'and'. Can one of the effects happen without the other?
A: Unlike Morning Glory Castle, Musume Mura does not explicitly say it targets the Province. Thus it targets the card in the Province that you choose to discard (as well as the discarded Personality) instead of the Province itself, and you cannot use it without actually choosing both such targets.
