Rules Q&A
- Q: In reference to the card Mystic Dojo: http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=5470
"This holding has +2GP when it pays for a single Shugenja only."
If paying for a 5G Shugenja during Dynasty, I bow Mystic Dojo and Silver Mine, producing a pool of 7 Gold. After bringing the Shugenja into play, does the extra 2G produced from the pool disappear, as it would be paying for another personality/holding?
I guess I'm just a bit confused on the change of wording from the older version.
A: When you produce gold, it does not go directly into the pool: it first goes to pay the cost, with leftovers going to the pool.
See Action Sequence, Step B, Paying Costs: "During the Pay Costs step ... its player may produce Gold and then pay for the action using the Gold just produced and Gold in that player’s Gold pool. Any Gold produced that is not spent on the action goes to the player’s Gold pool."
However, if you use the trait on Mystic Dojo to produce the extra 2g, none of the gold it produces is left over (even if you only spend 3g of the 4g on the Recruit action), so it does not enter the pool.
In contrast, anything produced by the Silver Mine which is not spent on the Recruit action, does go into the pool. Alex Jones, "Mystic Dojo and Gold Pooling", 23 Feb 2015 - Q: Quick question about variable production-
if I have a holding that, as printed, produces 2g, and it has a +1g Wealth token on it, what is its non-variable production?
I.e. Does variable production include tokens, or is it referring to cards like Mystic Dojo that produces more gold under certain circumstances?
A: Variable refers to having no set or base value, but the value is entirely dependent on another factor, and is usually represented by an asterisk absent of other numbers, such as the GP of Artisan Academy or Bandit Hideout. Mystic Dojo, or Holdings with Wealth tokens, do not have variable production. They have a known base production with bonuses. Brook Cunningham, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 6 Oct 2024
