- Although called shugenja by samurai, the spellcasters of the Naga call themselves jakla. Contrary to the shugenja, a jakla has no religious duties, but can call upon the power of the elements with great skill.

Rulings
- Q: Now that Follower tokens also count as cards, things like the Naga Shugenja will give the Stronghold's tokens Force bonuses, right? A: Wrong. Those Followers can't get Force bonuses because the Stronghold says so. It has nothing to do with whether they're cards. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.4 & errata, June 1997, p. 16
Rules Q&A
- Q: Ghedai Ho/Co/PH: 0/5/1 Naga Shugenja. Battle: Bow Ghedai to move any one of your units from one of the defender's Provinces to another. F/C: 1/2 Type: personalities
I'd think not, since his action satisfies both relevence and presence.
A: You mean "I'd think so", don't you? Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 June 2002", 6 Jun 2002 - Q: Pearl Magic reads... Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Naga Shugenja in this battle to make Ranged 2 Attacks targeting all opposing Followers and Personalities without Followers, in this battle. The Ranged Attack Strength cannot be raised.
Well, since it says right there in its own text that it does...
My reason for asking was since its hitting a BUNCH of things I was wondering if it was similar to Purity of the 7 Thunders and other blanket cards... I know it says target, but it also is hitting everything in a specific range (all personalities w/out followers and all followers) so I was wondering which way to go....
A: Targeting Rule #1 (do what the card says) comes before Targeting Rule #3 (global effects don't target), and the rules are read in order until you find the first one that applies. [p. 45] Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 May 2002", 23 May 2002 - Q: couple of questions that popped up during our sunday mulitplayer....
1. Does pearl magic target?
Pearl Magic reads... Kiho Battle: Bow one of your Naga Shugenja in this battle to make Ranged 2 Attacks targeting all opposing Followers and Personalities without Followers, in this battle. The Ranged Attack Strength cannot be raised.
A: Well, since it says right there in its own text that it does... Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 May 2002", 22 May 2002 - Q: Does this Badass lady lets get elite and a little penalty for force if some potent Naga Shugenja will cast this spell for one of Her students? or as it is not a "FEAR" action a poor student just is bowed and doesent gets elite?
A: It's not Fear. It does not interact with the trait. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 16 Nov 2023
