Rulings
- She can assign by herself. There does not need to be an army already present for her to "join." [DW, email, 3/1/99] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Her presence in an army will not change your overall role (Attacker/Defender/ally) in the attack. You also are not considered an ally if you assign her where you are not invited. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Putting her in the other army will not allow you to take battle actions twice as often. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Cannot assign if there is no attack. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Effects that move units between Provinces cannot move her from one side of the battle to the other. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Units and effects (including Way of Deception) that do not break the Rule of Presence cannot be used to swap with her or move in to join her. [DW, email, March 1999] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- The clause, "You never gain Honor when Ogoku joins an army," refers to the 2 point gain for allying. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Cannot assign with another unit during an Ambush. [18 July 1999] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 117
- Q: About this Ninube Ogoku, can she-- A: Whoa! Hang on! There's only so much room in this FAQ. Let me just give you the answers... She follows all the same rules as allies when she assigns. This means she can be assigned to a battle all by herself. Assigning her to an army does not make you an Ally if you were not invited. Having units in both armies does not change your overall role in the battle or let you take actions twice as often. Having her illegally in an army does not allow you to put additional units into that army, even with cards like Ninja Shadowalker and Way of Deception, unless those units are also allowed to illegally move into armies. Any card that refers to 'your army' may be played from the point of view of either your real army or the army Ogoku is in. Her clause about never gaining honor only refers to the 2 points gained by allying. The Imperial Herald, Issue 11, p. 27
Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm playing Ninube Ogoku, and I assign her in the army attacking my province, can I play any action requiring presence, including range attacks such as Arrows from the Woods or Tsuruchi Technique?
A: "Any action" is very broad, and I wouldn't go quite that far. I would say that action cards that create Ranged Attacks are probably generally okay. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 December 2003, Part 3", 12 Dec 2003 - Q: I want to know if Oguku's trait allows her to join in a cavalry army? Does her trait override cavalry maneuvers segment restriction that only cavalry units can assign during it? Is her trait the same as assigning?
A: Her trait is the same as assigning. She has to be Cavalry to assign in the Cavalry Maneuvers Segment. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 15-16 April 2001", 19 Apr 2001 - Q: Ninube Ogoku If Equipped with the Armor of Osono-wo and in my opponents Army attacking me, can I play the Ring of Earth instead of letting him destroy my province?
A: No. The Attacking player is the only one destroying a Province, and hence the only one who's meeting the Armor's reaction trigger. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 18 March 2001", 24 Mar 2001 - Q: February 2001)
Okay, so terrains resolve as the very last effect in the Battle Action Segment, not as the very first effect in the Resolution Segment. That answers one burning question about Shurin Storms.
Here's another:
My opponent attacks.
Ninube Ogoku, who is oathed to the Brotherhood and therefore able to cast kihos, assigns to the attacking army.
She casts Shurin Storms and is still in the battle at battle's end.
What happens to the province? Is it destroyed? That is, does "you" refer to "the player controlling the personality" (past precedent would seem to indicate such) or does it take the POV of the caster into account?
A: "You" refers to the person who played Shurin Storms. If the attack is coming after your Provinces, then you're the Defender, regardless of where Ogoku is. If she's still there, the Province will be destroyed. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 9 February 2001", 15 Feb 2001 - Q: I know that Ninube Ogoku can assign on the opposite side of the battle, even from your own units, but I'd like to know about Hida Yakamo and teh Dark Oracle of Water.
Hida Yakamo (I think it's the Thunder) can assign to battle if there are Shadowlands cards in the opposing army 'ignoring assignment restrictions'. Can he be in the opposite army from your own (I think not)?
One of the guys I play with plays a Shadowlands deck (Junzo's Army). Can he use the DOoW to assign with another player? Can he assign to the opposite army?
A: No in both cases. This is actually a pretty old issue, and is covered in the FAQ. Unless a card specifically says that it breaks a rule, always assume that the card doesn't break the rule. In the case of Yakamo and the Dark Oracle, they both do not *specifically* say that you can assign in opposition to yourself, so they don't break that basic rule of assignment. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for January 31st", 31 Jan 2001 - Q: Ninube Ogoku: Can I use the reaction to avoid getting my own personalities get destroyed?
A: I don't understand the question. Which probably means "No," whatever it is you're trying to do. Also, Rules Archive: "Her presence in an army will not change your overall role (Attacker/Defender/ally) in the attack. You also are not considered an ally if you assign her where you are not invited." Zen Faulkes, "Mercy & going as Ally", 28 Jul 2007 - Q: I think I've seen a ruling earlier on this forum, by Zen. I can't find it, it's too deep, and this crippled-search function and all. So sorry no link.
This ruling stated that Bokkai :
cannot target himself because he does not remove the need to target another player's card.
Let's quote the rulebook now :
Nothing there is written about the card needing to be another player's. There is only the "opposing" thingy. And it is waved per Bokkai's text.
Moreover, to thing of it, you can oppose your own units (writ of conscritption / Ninube Ogoku). In that case would your ranged attack should be able to target one of the card you control opposing another card you control (with a ranged attack) ? I believe so.
At least I have no reason to think anything else (except your ruling, which doesn't appear in the archive clearly either). I'm willing to believe you... If you explain me what made you think things were so.
Thanks for your time.
(And citing cards such as Arrows From the Wood or Tsuruchi Tech is probably irrelevant, because is has been ruled that "opposing" on such a card means "opposing a card you control")

A: Yoritomo Bokkai's Ranged Attack cannot target cards controlled by his controller. Consider this an erratum if you like. Zen Faulkes, "Bokkai-self", 16 Apr 2005
