Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "0G 3FV Reaction: Before you target a Ranged Attack from one of your attacking cards: The Ranged Attack has –1 strength and may target a card even if it is in the Defender’s home." [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 149
Rules Q&A
- Q: Can an action be cancelled by, for example, Kyuuden Ikoma, if its RA effect has been modified by 'No Hiding Place'?
A: Yes. "No Hiding Place" is timed well before the timing required for Kyuden Ikoma. It happens during the Targeting of an Action, and Kyuden Ikoma happens before the Effects of the Action would resolve. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 December 2004", 9 Dec 2004 - Q: I found an entry in the Timing section of the Accumulated Rulings that says one cannot play a Reaction in response to an action if one of its effects was modified.
A: There is no such ruling. It reads "Reactions played in response to an action must be played *before* the action produces any effects or has one of its effects modified." (Examples removed, emphasis added.)
That ruling says when you can play a Reaction, not that you can't.
Zen Faulkes! * Crab Clan Scholar *Deputy Rules Guy * Unaligned Rules Archivist Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 November 2004", 26 Nov 2004 - Q: Diamond Rulebook says : ""No player may take action (including Reactions) or bring cards into play between the start of the Battle Action Segment and the first Battle or Open action opportunity, except for Reactions to that action."
- I know that means no one can play a Sneak Attack during a Naval Invasion.
- During a Naval Invasion, I can play No Hiding Place if my first action is a RA, but my opponent can NOT play Fall on Your Knees on the NHP, right?
A: Yes. Both Actions are taken before the first opportunity to take an Open or Battle Action, however only No Hiding Place is played in response to that first opportunity - thus only it is legal to play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 October 2004", 1 Nov 2004 - Q: If Nobumoto uses No Hiding Place, and then it gets Fall'ed (obviously outside of a naval invasion), what happens?
A: Well, the Reaction is technically played "before" the Action, so you react to announcement. Targets haven't been picked or anything. The Action isn't going to be legal, so I would assume that if you don't have another "No Hiding Place' you're going to have to find some other Action to take or Pass. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 May 2004", 29 May 2004 - Q: How do these two cards work together?
A: No Hiding Place says, "Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards to target a card in the Defender's home with a Ranged Attack. This Ranged Attack has -1 Strength."
You can play No Hiding Place before any point in which you are required to choose a Target for a Ranged Attack produced by Kuro's Fire.
Kuro's Fire is a bit tricky, though. It has an Action that produces Consecutive Ranged Attacks.
The FIRST Ranged Attack Kuro's Fire makes has to have its target chosen when you play the Action itself - before you pay the cost of the Action or produce any effects.
All the other Ranged Attacks Kuro's Fire makes have their target choosen immediately before producing the next Ranged Attack effect.
Play No Hiding Place immediately before you choose a target for a Ranged Attack from Kuro's Fire. That Ranged Attack (and only that Ranged Attack) can be targeted against a card in the Defender's home.
It gets -1 Strength, but that counts against the maximum total Ranged Attack Strength Kuro's Fire permits you to produce. You can just declare the number of the Ranged Attack's Strength as 1 greater to compensate. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 April 2004", 13 Apr 2004 - Q: I have my opportunity to play a Battle or Open action in the Battle Action Segment. I want to use an attacking Tsuruchi Hiro plus No Hiding Place to kill a Seruma in the other player's fief.
A: [MARTY] No Hiding Place says:
"Reaction: Play before producing a ranged attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the Defender’s home with that ranged attack. The ranged attack has -1 strength."
Now, the trigger might seem to at first indicate you play this card immediately before resolving ("producing") the Ranged Attack effect of an Action. However, you'll never get that far with Tsuruchi Hiro because you'll never be able to pick Seruma as a legal target for his action and move onto this point.
This means that in order to have No Hiding Place do its thing, you need it to resolve before you choose targets.
Jeff Alexander wrote the following in "Rules for 4 March 2004 Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 March 2004", 31 Mar 2004 - Q: No Hiding Place is a Reaction to that action that, in this case, is played before the action (since it changes what the ranged attack is allowed to target). That puts it before the first opportunity to act. But it's legal because it's reacting to the ranged attack action.
A: And tie that in with the following from the Rules Archive:
"Actions must be announced before playing Reactions that occur "before" the initial action occurs (e.g., Imperial Messenger), so that there is a known legal trigger for the Reaction. Once an action is announced, you may not voluntarily abandon it because a Reaction to it has been canceled or negated (unless costs or targeting requirements are no longer met). [ZF, 15 April 2003]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Timing")
Based on the above rulings, I'm going to go with "after you declare a Ranged Attack" as the timing on this, just to keep things tidy. No Hiding Place gets worded a little differently because it can respond to an individual Ranged Attack in a series of Consecutive Ranged Attacks as well as Actions that produce single Ranged Attack. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 March 2004", 31 Mar 2004 - Q: I attack with Nobumoto to Province A. Seruma stay at the fief.
I declare Naval Invasion, use the Battle of Nobumoto and Reaction with No Hiding Place, trying to kill Seruma.
Q: Could the Phoenix player cancel No Hiding Place with Fall on Your Knees?
A: This looks like it's already been covered. The short answer is "no". Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 March 2004", 29 Mar 2004 - Q: If my opponent attacks, and we are resolving one of the battles, can I play flee the darkness to stop a ranged attack targeting my guy at home from a no hiding place.
A: If the ranged attack is a Battle or an Open action, yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 12 March 2004", 13 Mar 2004 - Q: Can you No Hiding Place out of an Ambush?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: Will a Loyal Yojimbo protect you from a No Hiding Place?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: Must there be an opposing card in the battle in order to play [No Hiding Place] to shoot somebody in the Defender's home?
A: No (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 October 2003", 19 Oct 2003 - Q: Assuming I'm attacking, can I use "No Hiding Place" with a Ranged Attack from one of my attacking personalities, and keep him/her from bowing using the stronghold's trait?
A: No. A card at home is not opposing (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 74). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: Does No Hiding Place allow targeting of a [Personality] even with followers?
A: No (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 63). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 September 2003, Part 2", 20 Sep 2003 - Q: No Hiding Place--can it be used from Tsuruchi/Arrows (are they 'attacking' cards)?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 19 September 2003, Part 2", 20 Sep 2003 - Q: Concerning No Hiding Place, I just want to know if normal targetting rule apply, like "not on a personnality with at least one follower attached".
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 August 2003", 30 Aug 2003 - Q: I have a Shugenja in my fief. My opponent attacks with Shinjo Xushen. In the battle he tries to use No Hiding Place with Xushen against my Shugenja. I play Fall on your Knees. Must Xushen bow?
A: Oh, great. More pre-emptive weirdness.
I think it depends on whether there is a legal target for the Ranged Attack without the use of No Hiding Place. You can't take an action (like a Ranged Attack) without a legal target (No Hiding Places changes the legal target, obviously). But again, you must have announced the Ranged Attack to use No Hiding Place, an you normally can't abandon actions halfway through them (barring cost or targeting problems).
I'm getting less comfortable with these "play this Reaction before your action" rulings, though, and look forward to hearing Jeff's take on them. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 April 2003, Part 1", 16 Apr 2003 - Q: About no Hiding Place. Does this card work with the spell Arrows of Purity, since No Hiding Place specifies that the ranged attack come from one card, and Arrows of Purity is a ranged attack coming from 2 or 3 cards? Thank you!
A: Arrow of Purity comes from one card: the one that the card text says performs it. No Hiding Place should probably have specified "an uncombined ranged attack". Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 April 2003", 4 Apr 2003 - Q: Now I have 2x No Hiding place in my hand and I control a Shugenja with Fires From Withing Attached. Can the Shugenja, when attacking, target 2 personalities in the defender's home if I use 2 No Hiding Place when he bows for 2 consecutive attacks?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 March 2003", 31 Mar 2003 - Q: While playing my Crane against my friend's Mantis, we came up with an interesting question I'd love to have answered if possible.
No Hiding Place reads, "Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength."
Rekai reads: " Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."
Could they be used together?
A: I'd love to answer "yes" to this because it's in the spirit of the cards, but that creates a big timing paradox, since she has to move before she shoots, No Hiding Place can't be used until after she moves, she can only move if she uses her action, and she can't use her action until after No Hiding Place is played. I'm going to rule against it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 March 2003", 21 Mar 2003 - Q: Can I play a Tsuruchi Technique after I play a No Hiding Place? I mean, can I increase the ranged attack strenght?
A: If the attack comes "from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle", there's an incredibly high chance it's coming from "one of your units". Tsuruchi Technique's Reaction is legal. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 March 2003", 20 Mar 2003 - Q: I use Tsushuru techniques with No Hiding Place.
A: No, you don't. That's illegal. No Hiding Place says, "Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle". It can't be used in combination with an attack caused by a card from your hand.
And to answer the rest of your question, Higher Ground also only affects ranged attacks that come "from your army", not from things like your hand or Regions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30-31 January 2003", 1 Feb 2003 - Q: No Hiding Place Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength.
Whistling Bulb Arrow Reaction: Bow and destroy whistling bulb arrow before this personality makes an uncombined ranged attack. The personality makes an additional consecutive ranged attack afterward, with a strength equal to this attack's base strength.
I was wondering about the timing of these two cards since they both trigger before the RA actually happens. Can I play No Hiding Place first, then the Arrow? I figure it was one RA at first so it fulfills the "from exactly one of your attacking cards" clause then it forks into two afterwards.
So which outcome can I play: No Hiding Place then Arrow? a) shoot 2 different units in his fief b) shoot 2 cards in the same unit in his fief
A: c) shoot one target in the Defender's home and then one opposing target, since the Whistling Bulb Arrow's shot does not acquire the targeting choices of the original shot. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 June 2002", 20 Jun 2002 - Q: Arrow then No Hiding Place?
A: If you use the Arrow first, you can play the No Hiding Place before either the original shot or the Arrow shot. In either case, it will retarget only that one ranged attack. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 June 2002", 20 Jun 2002 - Q: BTW, is it legal? can you ikiryo/no hiding place a parsonality with followers?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 June 2002", 12 Jun 2002 - Q: Can No Hiding Place kill a personality in the fief with a follower attached, or does the ranged attack have to target the follower first?
A: No Hiding Place does not override any targeting restrictions on ranged attacks other than where the target can be. Followers must still be destroyed first. Jeff Alexander, "post for 5 June 2002", 6 Jun 2002 - Q: Concealed Archers reads "Play immediately before you bow one or more cards in a unit capable of a Ranged Attack who are not at this battle. Resolve this Ranged Attack as if the unit were in the battle."
while
No Hiding Place reads "Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battleto target a card in the Defender's home with the Ranged Attack."
Could I then use those two cards together to make a ranged attack from one unit in my fief targeting one unit at my opponent's fief, ie none of the cards need to actually be at a battle?
A: Yes, but only if there is exactly one card producing a ranged attack. Otherwise, No Hiding Place's trigger is not met. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2002", 4 Jun 2002 - Q: Question, Can I use No Hiding Place on Rekai's battle action? ["Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength"] ["Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."] She isn't producing the ranged attack until she is in the battle. Is this legal?
No. No Hiding Place is used before targets are chosen, and Rekai is not "in the current battle" then.
Just to be absolutely clear on this :>
The answer is "No" when she is using her ability to move into the battle, and "Yes" if she is in the battle and uses her ability. Right?
A: If she's "in the current battle" when she chooses the target for her ranged attack, No Hiding Place is legal. If she's not, it isn't. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 April 2002", 12 Apr 2002 - Q: Question, Can I use No Hiding Place on Rekai's battle action? ["Reaction: Play before producing a Ranged Attack from exactly one of your attacking cards in the current battle to target a card in the defender's home with the Ranged Attack. The Ranged Attack has -1 strength"] ["Battle: Once per turn, move Rekai into the current battle and have her make a Ranged 3 Attack that cannot combine with other ranged attacks, without bowing."] She isn't producing the ranged attack until she is in the battle. Is this legal?
A: No. No Hiding Place is used before targets are chosen, and Rekai is not "in the current battle" then. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 April 2002", 11 Apr 2002 - Q: I had a couple of questions come up at a recent DA pre-release tournament I ran, and would like to know if I made that right call.
The first one, and the one that pertains strictly to the Gold environment, is if Isawa Nakamuro and a couple other units (Doesn't matter who for this one) are at home and not assigned to battle, can Nakamuro redirect a ranged attack targeting one of those units via "No Hiding Place"? I ruled no, because Nankamuro says "army" which in the definition says attacking or defending...was that the right call?
A: It was. Nakamuro is not in an army when he's home. Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 April 2002", 10 Apr 2002 - Q: Quick question, can No Hiding Place be used for a range attack on a personality with followers ?
A: No. Aside from allowing the target to be in the Defender's home instead of opposing, all other targeting rules and restrictions apply. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 April 2002", 2 Apr 2002 - Q: Can the Defender use No Hiding Place to target his own Personalities/Followers at home?
A: No. While "No Hiding Place" does explicitly override the Rule of Location, it does not explicitly override the requirement that Ranged Attacks target an enemy Personality. Jon Palmer, "No Hiding Place", 15 Jul 2012 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97365
Nothing on Snake Tattoo says that your personality has to be at the current battlefield, and adjacent battlefields still exist, so what is preventing the monk from moving to a battlefield adjacent to the current battlefield from home?
http://rules.l5r.com/EE_Areas_of_the_ga ... mporary.29 "Battlefields associated with adjacent provinces are themselves adjacent." (fun fact, that line is in the wiki twice in that section)
A: My previous answer stands.
I do see your point, but there's a flaw in your logic.
Adjacency isn't... in fact CAN'T.... be determined by unstated default from the current battlefield without regard to the Personality. Consider, the current battlefield is ALSO "an adjacent battlefield" by your definition; adjacent to the ones beside it. Therefore, in the absence of specifcs such as the ones found on Never Beyond My Reach, adjacency can only be determined relative to the moving Personality's battlefield/location, and a Personality at home has no battlefield adjacent to his. Brook Cunningham, "No Hiding Place vs Snake tattoo.", 13 Apr 2012 - Q: Can a Snake Tattoo be used on a No Hiding Place? The new rule book does not talk about being at home.
A: Your example is a little vague, but let me guess that your Tattooed Personality is at home, being targeted by a Ranged Attack, and you wonder if you can react with Snake Tattoo? Well, yes you can react, but it won't do anything. An "adjacent battlefield" is one that's on either side of another battlefield, determined by adjacency of provinces. There is no battlefield "adjacent" to your home, so the Tattooed Personality would fail to move anywhere, and would then still be a legal target for a Ranged Attack modified by No Hiding Place. Brook Cunningham, "No Hiding Place vs Snake tattoo.", 13 Apr 2012 - Q: Text bits: No Hiding Place Reaction: After you announce an action with a Ranged Attack: Give one Ranged Attack from the action -1 strength. That Ranged Attack may target a card in the Defender's home (if otherwise legal).
Koshin Keep Recon Reaction: After engaging: You have Reconnaissance at the current battlefield. Until this battle ends, your Ranged Attacks that do not destroy their target have the additional effects, "reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength and you may take an additional Ranged Attack action that may only target the same card."
So, let's say I'm assigning a couple of personalities with Battle: Ranged 5 Attack and my opponent has a 9F dude in his home I want to kill. I react to assigning with Koshin Keep. My first battle action is a No Hiding Place to RA4 my opponent's dude. Due to the text of Koshin Keep, since my RA4 did not kill the personality at home, can I take my RA5 against the personality at home?
Koshin Keep says nothing about "same target, if legal" so we've been playing like it does allow the subsequent attack to target the same dude at home. This has angered some local players so I'm asking here.
A: "May only" is used as a restriction, not a permission. In this case, Koshin Keep will not allow you to overcome the normal targeting restrictions on a Ranged Attack (you could, of course, play an additional No Hiding Place). Jon Palmer, "Kolat Edition - No Hiding Place with Koshin Keep", 4 Jan 2012 - Q: If you do a ranged attack, and they misdirect, can you then use "no hiding place" to 'steal back' the ability to chose the target?
A: No. No Hiding Place does not change the player doing the targeting, it only expands the range of available targets. Zen Faulkes, "Misdirection and No Hiding Place", 17 Nov 2008 - Q: Can my opponent react with a Misdirection after I played a No Hiding Place on one of my Ranged Attack, or does Misdirection have to be played before I have the opportunity to play my No Hidding Place ?
Thanks for your answer and all the hardwork.
[Mod edit, thread title spelling (to ease others' searches). -- MB2001]
A: EDIT: No longer "Under Discussion".
Yes, your opponent must react with Misdirection before you react with No Hiding Place; Misdirection's trigger techinically comes first.
http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_M#Misdirection: "The timing point of Misdirection's action trigger is: during the other player's action's Required Targeting Step, in between the last required targeting in the constraints block (if any) and the first required targeting in the effects block (if any)."
Because Misdirection's timing is "in between" constraints block and effects block targeting, it always triggers before things which trigger in response to a specific targeting within the effects, as No Hiding Place does.
So, after No Hiding Place, the timing has already passed for Misdirection, and it's too late. Brook Cunningham, "Misdirection and No Hiding Place", 17 Nov 2008 - Q: No Hiding Place Reaction: Before you target a Ranged Attack from one of your attacking cards: The Ranged Attack has -1 strength and may target a card even if it is in the Defender's home.
The Mantis's Strength Battle: Target one of your unbowed Mantis Clan Personalities: Ranged Attack with strength equal to his Chi, and +2 strength if he is a Magistrate.
Can I use No Hiding Place with The Mantis's Strength? Seems to me that the ranged Attack is produced by the performing personality but I'd like to have it confirmed.
A: From: "The source is the card that the effect, action or targeting is printed on, or the rulebook if it is printed there. ... Targeting and destruction by Ranged Attacks come from the card that created the Ranged Attack, not the rulebook."
The Ranged attack is "from" the Action card The Mantis' Strength, not the performing Personality. Alex Jones, "No Hiding Place and The Mantis's Strength", 16 Jun 2008 - Q: If you're attacking an opponent, can you use No Hiding Place with Harmonious Temple?
A: No. The Harmonoius Temple holding is where the Ranged Attack is "from" (http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_F#From), and it's not attacking as required by No Hiding Place. Zen Faulkes, "No Hiding Place & Harmonious Temple", 3 Jun 2008 - Q: Ok, this may be a little complex but.. This is the proposed scenario:
I declare an attack; I assign no attackers No defenders are assigned I play Concealed Archers Cost:0 Focus:3 Battle: You may take an additional action to use a Battle ability with a Ranged Attack effect on one of your target cards in a unit not at the current battlefield. Add one to the strength of each of the ability's Ranged Attacks if the unit's Personality is Naga. Lose 2 Honor. Can I then use Mountain Shadow Dojo + Burn It Down Cost:0 Focus:4 Reaction: After you announce an action with a Ranged Attack effect: One of the Ranged Attacks may target this battlefield's province instead of an enemy card. If it does, reduce the province's strength by the Ranged Attack's strength when it resolves. Or No Hiding Place Cost:0 Focus:3 Reaction: Before you target a Ranged Attack from one of your attacking cards: The Ranged Attack has -1 strength and may target a card even if it is in the Defender's home.
Then as the ranged attack is resolved move a unit into the battle as per Mountain Shadow Dojo? Hopefully activating Yaichiro and gaining a 2f follower.
There that better? A simple please use complete titles reminder would have sufficed. Instead of the sarcasm. Thanks!
A: MSD? Most Significant Digit? Marine Sanitation Device? Mass Storage Device? Multi Spark Discharge? Membrane Spanning Domain? Medium Screen Display?
Mod reminder: Use complete card titles when asking questions. Thanks! Zen Faulkes, "Mountain Shadow Dojo+Concealed Archers", 5 Dec 2007 - Q: regarding the following cards... Arrow of Purity - attached to a shugenja at home. cost targetting: attacker at province A Mountain Shadow Dojo
Comprehensive rules say "The source of targeting and effects from a Ranged Attack is the same as the source producing it. Ranged Attacks come from the card effects that create them, not the rulebook."
Am I correct to say that the spell and stronghold are the sources of the ranged attacks and not the personalities involved in their costs and thus "No Hiding Place" is not allowed since the source of the Ranged Attack is not in the current battlefield?
A: Well, if the Arrow of Purity spells is not among your Attacking Cards, no you couldn't use No Hiding Place on the Ranged Attack. You can never use No Hiding Place with Mountain's Shadow Dojo.
I'll make sure any reference to Mountain's Shadow Dojo and No Hiding Place that might have come up in tangental discussions about the Rule of Location are correct. Martin Lund, "SE Ranged attacks source clarification needed", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: in reference with that topic viewtopic.php?f=59&t=59606
If i understand well it means that the text of the MSD itself says that yoy could not move into the current battlefield independently to the ranged attack legality.
So if i understand correctly the following scenario is not correct:
A crane samourai A is at battlefield 1, we actually resolve battlefield B, I use the Moutain shadow's dojo with A saying i would moving him in the battlefield 2. And I react the targeting of the ranged attack with Burn it down (alternative solution: no hiding place) to make the ranged attack legal.
Could you please confirm.
Texts of card: Mountain’s Shadow Dojo Battle: Even if this Stronghold is bowed, target one of your Crane Clan Samurai: Ranged 3 Attack. Move him home or to another battlefield.
Burn it Down Reaction: After you announce an action with a Ranged Attack effect: One of the Ranged Attacks may target this battlefield’s province instead of an enemy card. If it does, reduce the province’s Strength by the Ranged Attack’s strength when it resolves.
No Hiding Place Reaction: Before you target a Ranged Attack from one of your attacking cards: The Ranged Attack has -1 and may target a card even if it is in the Defender’s home.
ps: concerning a remark on a precedent post, sorry about my english, i will try to be clearer.
A: OK, first I need try to restate what I think your question is asking:
The situation we have involves 2 Battlefields: Battlefield #1 and Battlefield #2. The situation we have involves a Crane Clan Samurai.
The Crane Clan Samurai is at Battlefield #1 and we're in the Combat Segment of Battlefield #2.
You want to use Mountain's Shadow Dojo.
You normally need to meet the following requirements to make a legal play:
- Target your Crane Clan Samurai to move him to Battlefield #2 (Location & Presence)
Nothing gets in the way of that, so you're clear here.
- Target an enemy card at Battlefield #2 (Location)
If you introduce Burn it Down or No Hiding Place, they have card text that waives the Rule of Location Requirement as it pertains to the target victim of the Ranged Attack.
The only problem is, No Hiding Place requires the Ranged Attack to come from an Attacking Card, and your Stronghold (which has the ability) is not Attacking. No Hiding Place can not be legally combined with Mountain's Shadow Dojo's ability.
Burn It Down will let you get around this second requirement - provided there is a legal target. Burn It Down wouldn't work with an Ambush battle (no Province to target). Martin Lund, "Another Mountain shadow's dojo question", 27 Jul 2007 - Q: OK first thing, I know you have already answer to this before. But I do not understand the logic.
Your answer was:
It is not mentionned:
Must or may target an opponent card at home,
It is mentioned:
No Hiding Place:
"Even if it is" it does not mean: The ranged attack may target at the defender home. The word EVEN open more possibilities like ranging somebody who's defending in another battle. If it is not working, well the card is clearly unintuitive and there should be a rewording on the card.
By the way No Hiding Place should means No Hiding place, not even in your provinces
P.S: Thanks Zen for making it clear that with the wording on this card we can target a card in other provinces
(Mod edit: Formatting. -ZF)
A: Ranged Attack normally target cards in the same battlefield. No Hiding Place allows only one extra location the target can be: the Defender's home. No other battles allowed. Zen Faulkes, "No Hiding place", 5 Feb 2006 - Q: In reference to this post, wouldn't the timing be:
1) Announce Hasaiki's ability
2) Announce targets: 1 personality and a legal target for a ranged attack
3) resolve effects: bow personality
4) resolve effects: perform a ranged attack against previous target
No hiding place is done immediately before a ranged attack is performed. that would be step 4. The fact that a legal ranged attack target was announced back in step 2 is irrelevant. Since you're not actually targeting a ranged attack in that step, would No hiding place then be an illegal reaction to take? Further, when it is legal to take, the target has already been pre-determined by the ability, so No Hiding Place would be wasted there, right?
A: No Hiding Place changes allowable targets, so would be played when targeting occurs, regardless of when the Ranged Attack is actually produced. By card text, it is know that Hasaiki no Oni's ability will generate a Ranged Attack, so the ability can be used with No Hiding Place. Zen Faulkes, "Hasaiki's Hiding place?", 8 May 2005 - Q: "Remember that you can use tacticians in other locations for Rain's first ability." - Rain of Death's card text reads: "*Center Formation* *Formed by 2 Personalities with the printed Tactician trait.* Tactical Battle: Produce two consecutive Ranged 3 Attacks. Tactical Battle: Bow and destroy the performing Tactician: Target two cards opposing him that have no unbowed cards attached. Destroy them." Again, I don't have the rulebook in front of me, but I thought Ranged Attacks had to be against opposing units, unless modified by something like No Hiding Place?
A: Rain of Death is the card with the Ranged Attack Action. It can't be in an army any more than Arrows from the Woods or Tsuruchi Technique can be - so it can never be opposed. For cards like that you use "opposing" in reference to the player taking the Action instead of the card with the Ability - so the Ranged Attack must target a card opposing cards you control in the battle.
Rain of Death says nothing, however, about those cards needing to oppose the Performing Tactician. It doesn't even target him, as per the Web of Lies Rules Sheet. Martin Lund, "Confusion over some rules interpretations...", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: heya all,
I've had some confusion in my deluted little brain about how Purge the Weak works.
"Maho reaction: Once per turn, after one of your Limited, Open, or Battle actions resolves, reduce this shugenja's Chi by 1 to take another action of the same type."
First, is the 1 chi loss permanent?
Second, What does the same Type mean? Does type mean, another battle, limited or open action, or is it more concise than that, and if I were to say, Do a range attack, would it have to be another range attack. Does this care about specialty things, like doing a raid action. If I did a raid battle action, would I be able to do a normal battle action?

Diamond rules, pg. 70: No.

If you take Battle action, you can only take another Battle action. Limited lets you do another Limited. Open lets you do another Open.

Ummmm... Zen where is this coming from?
Does this mean that anyone producing a range attack can shoot anyone, anywhere, anytime? Cause it has NEVER been that way. You need a specific card effect, No Hiding Place for example, to do crazy things like that. Range Attacks target cards opposing the card producing the range attack. Simple as that.
If your going on the entire idea that, RoD doesn't "oppose" anyone, your being uber liberal with the rules, and creating a bad precedent. Though this would then apply to Tsuruchi Tech, as it does not "oppose" another card and it produces a range attack.
I honestly think your wrong in this.
Though I am sure every person playing Castle of the Wasp just wet their pants...
A: You can perform the Tactical Action with a Tactician at any location.
You must, however, still target the Ranged Attack from the Formation against cards in the Current Battle, opposing cards you control.
Oh, and Tsuruchi Technique fails the Rule of Relevance if it targets anything outside of the Current Battle. Zen Faulkes, "A few questions about Purge the Weak", 12 Mar 2005 - Q: Sejmitar wrote:

If an opponent plays no hiding place, versus a personality at home.
And they are unopposed... what keywords would the interrupt need for me to stop it?
A: If you have no Presence, you'd need an Absent Interrupt. With Home/Remote too if it's from a unit. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 20 Mar 2025 - Q: ok, thank you! I had included no hiding place with this idea in mind, but then read it as an interrupt and was like... waaaait a second lol
A: All that said, my ancient memory stirs that there may have been past Editions where in the Rules, RA targeting was not required, but that way lies madness. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 11 May 2024 - Q: Can you range attack nothing? Like... lets say I have a range 3, can I activate the ability without a target at the battlefield? I am asking because "No Hiding Place" indicates that it's an interrupt to the action.
A: No, there is required targeting for RAs. However, in specific reference to your NHP example, actions can be announced and targets can be chosen legally in their respective steps based on later actions/choices that you may take, and if you do so, you must take them/be able to take them. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 11 May 2024 - Q: While we are on the subject, can you use "concealed archers" and "no hiding place" to shoot into and out of the battle that is created by "Ambush"?
A: Your example is unclear. Are you asking about using both cards together, or how each card interacts separately with Ambush?
Well, assuming the latter, yes you can shoot into an Ambush with Concealed Archers, and yes you can shoot out of one with NHP. Provided, in the NHP case, that it's YOUR Ambush. Brook Cunningham, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 16 Nov 2023
