- Q: Obsidian and Jade says, "That Personality cannot assign or move to a battle with other Personalities, and other Personalities may not assign or move to a battle with that Personality." Does that mean it's illegal for other players to assign defenders against the Personality I played this card on? A: No. Those restrictions apply only to units on the same side as that Personality -- units trying to assign to a battle "with" it. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, April 26, 2004, p. 11
Rules Q&A
- Q: Limited: Bow your Stronghold to permanently give one of your Personalities the Shadowlands trait and a permanent Force bonus equal to the number of Shadowlands Personalities you control when Obsidian and Jade was played. For the rest of the game, that Personality cannot assign or move to a battle with other Personalities, and other Personalities may not assign or move to a battle with that Personality.
If I assign a personality that was targetted with C&J to battle, can the defender assign blockers in that province?
A: Yes. Obsidian and Jade's restriction only applies to that Personality's own army. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 9 Feb. 2004", 10 Feb 2004 - Q: A "will only assign alone" clause (Obsidian and Jade) on another Personality?
A: Technically, yes...but wouldn't a clause like this make it impossible for them to assign together anyways? Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 13th, 2003", 13 Aug 2003 - Q: Ok. Obsidian and Jade reads as follows:
Limited: Bow your Stronghold to permanently give one of your personalites the Shadowlands trait and a permanent Force bouns equal to the number of Shadowlands Personalities you control when Obsidian and Jade was played. For the rest of the game, that Personality cannot assign or move to a battle with other personalities, and other personalites may not assign or move to a battle with that personality.
Have there been any rulings on this card? It seems awfully powerful. Particulary so in the Diamond enviroment.
A: Assigning in opposition to is not "assigning with". Personalities are free to assign in opposition to an Obsidian and Jade-ed Personality. They just can't assign "with" him. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 25th, 2003", 25 Jul 2003 - Q: After looking at Obsidian and Jade; If I target the Maw with Obsidian and Jade and then declare and attack. If I assign the Maw to attack during the infantry phase, neither the defender nor attacker can assign or move anyone into that battle as long as the Maw is there?
A: From the FAQ:

Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 May 2003", 29 May 2003 - Q: So, here's my questions: Can I play multiple copies of Obsidian and Jade on one of my persnalities? Can I play Obsidian and Jade on one of my personalities that already has the Shadowlands trait?
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 March 2003", 1 Apr 2003 - Q: P.S. Obsidian and Jade effectively turns one of your personalities into the Crab Clan Oni, not into Okura no Oni, right?
A: Right. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 March 2003", 1 Apr 2003 - Q: I have a clarification questions for Obsidian and Jade. The last sentence reads:
"For the rest of the game, that Personality cannot assign or move into a battle with other Personalities, and other Personalities may not assign or move to a battle with that Personality."
Question 1: If I send one Goblin Wizard to my opponents Fate most province at what point is he considered in the battle? A. As soon as he assigns? B. After the assignment phase? C. Other?
Question 2: My reading of O&J is that it affects everyone's Personalities since it says "other Personalities". Thus your opponent could not assign or move his Personalities to a battle containing the O&B'd Personality. Is this the correct interpretation?
Depending on the answer to Question 1 this could be a very nasty card. Once O&J takes effect if your opponent could not assign Personalities against him or move unit into his battle once he was assigned. I know that is way too strong but the card text is very vague and I think requires some clarification.
A: Obsidian and Jade works just like the original Hida Yakamo oni. The Personality cannot assign to an army that already contains units, units cannot assign to an army that already contains it, and it cannot assign at the same time as other units. The card has no effect on how units are allowed to assign opposing it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 October 2002", 12 Oct 2002
