Rules Q&A
- Q: Hey all just wondering what would happen when you put Oni no Akuma under The forgotten tombs...
A: After an appropriate delay of six (or seven, for the Spawning Grounds) turns, it enters play and does not destroy any Provinces because it did not enter play from a Province. Jeff Alexander, "post for 31 July 2002", 1 Aug 2002 - Q: Also, if Oni no Akuma is placed in the Forgotten Tomb, is the province from which it came destroyed? Or is it destroyed when Oni no Akuma emerges from the tomb, or is it not destroyed at all? I suspect the latter.
A: The MRP of Oni no Akuma destroys the Province "from which it was played". If it's not played from a Province, it doesn't destroy one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 April 2002", 2 Apr 2002 - Q: Akuma no Oni xp2 has as text:
Text Shadowlands • Nonhuman • Oni • Overlord • Experienced 2 Oni no Akuma • Unique After Akuma enters play: Lose 15 Honor and destroy your rightmost province. During the Action Phase, Akuma does not bow and may not be targeted. Once per game, after a battle's resolution in which an attacking army containing Akuma destroyed a province: Destroy another of the Defender’s Provinces.
Never stand alone has two abilities, each of which target during the Action phase: Text Open: Remove a target Personality in a discard pile from the game. Limited: Target a discarded (not dead) Personality you own. Put the Personality face-up in one of your provinces, discarding a card from it if necessary.
BUT, Akuma isn't "in play," but he IS face up, so is using either ability legal?
A: Akuma no Oni exp2 may not be targeted by either ability on Never Stand Alone, since its trait is active in the discard pile.
See Implications of in and out of play: Cards that are not in play or in a resolution, entering-play or focusing area have the following limitations: * Their continuous traits do not produce effects. EXCEPTION: Continuous effects on cards out of play affect only the card itself. Alex Jones, "Akuma no Oni vs. Never Stand Alone", 25 Mar 2010 - Q: My opponent had a dishonored Oni no Akuma in his discard pile. When he attacked, I used Echos of Disgrace, targeting Oni no Akuma and gave 3 of his Personalities -20 F. Since the Force stat of a card cannot be less than 0, when is this penalty calculated? If, for instance, Utaku Kohana recieved a -20F penalty could she gain a +2f bonus and be back to where she was or does she need to dig herself out of the hole?
Edited for correct spelling. Please make sure cards are spelled correctly so that other people searching can find them.
A: An attacking Utaku Kohana, at 2F, is given a -20F penalty from Echoes of Disgrace.
She then gets targeted by Charge, giving her +2F.
Her new force is 2F (base) -20F (Echoes) +2F (Charge) = -16F (apply standard minimum of 0)-->0 Force.
Remember that minimums, whether given by the rulebook or by other cards are always applied last. Dan Jacobson, "Echos of Disgrace+Oni no Akuma+Force Penalties", 19 Nov 2009 - Q: Oni no Akuma: if I overlay exp2(which also eats a province and a come into play effect) what happens?
A: Not much.
http://rules.l5r.com/Physically_marked_ ... Overlaying: "(A)n overlaying card is not entering play even if it comes from an out-of-play area(.)" Thus, entering play effects (like Province destruction) do not occur. Zen Faulkes, "Overlaying.", 1 May 2008 - Q: When Oni no Akuma enters play and destroys my rightmost province does this take effect before the end of battle resolution thus creating a null battle field?
A: Yes.
Note for those playing along at home: This is a change in Samurai Edition. Comprehensive Rules, Battle, After Resolution: "If a province is destroyed for any reason other than resolution during a battle or attack, its battlefield ceases to exist and any Terrain in play there is discarded. All units still there return home. These units bow if they were in an attacking army or if they were allied units." Zen Faulkes, "Complex Imbue Chi/Kyoso/Akuma Question", 28 Jun 2007 - Q: and as example Daigotsu or other lose honor cards
Would I gain 20 honor when my oponent brings Daigotsu into play before the clause on his shadowlands/spider stronghold to negate loses?
I know Daigotsu just got previewed but the question is gaining honor from my opponent losses, just daigotsu had a bigger number and hadn't the same clause as Oni no Akuma (cannot negate the loss).
Thanks for your time.
A: When Samurai Edition rules come into effect, the Spider stronghold will work like the Shadowlands strongholds did: there will be no honor loss to manipulate at all.
While I'm here, this is as good a time to mention that when the Samurai Edition rules hits, The Spider's Lair stronghold will not be negating honor losses as it does now. Again, it will work like the Shadowlands strongholds work: there are simply no losses at all, so this means that a Spider's Lair player will not lose honor even for honor losses that cannot be negated. This is not so much a reversal as new rules and wordings coming into effect.
In fact, I should probably sticky this thread for a while. Zen Faulkes, "Dirty Politics + Lose honor for Bringing Onis into play", 27 Jun 2007 - Q: Forgive me if this was answered on another thread. I was just sorting my cards into Samurai Legal and other. I've got a sickhouse Shadowlands personality named Oni no Akuma (exp2). On the list is a personality named Akuma no Oni (exp2). Are they, in fact, the same oni?

A: You can't really tell without the art, because you have to count the number of tongues.
Time to put up an announcement...
(I'm just so glad I reminded them to put the ellipses back on Lies, Lies, Lies...) Zen Faulkes, "Does Oni no Akuma = Akuma no Oni?", 9 Jun 2007 - Q: Hows is not losing the honor for being Spider Clan any different than a Shadowlands not loosing the honor for Oni no Akuma when he comes into play?
A: Spider Clan is not Shadowlands.
The way Shadowlands strongholds work was laid out over ten years ago, when the rules for L5R were much more loosey goosey (to use the technical term). That's why they've always had extensive explanations of how they're supposed to work, from the Anvil of Despair rulebook down through the Rules Archive in all its incarnations.
Spider Clan doesn't have that advantage. It's debuting at a time when there is a much more well defined set of rules. Zen Faulkes, "Oni no Akuma XP2 and the Porcelain Mask of Fu Leng XP2", 29 May 2007 - Q: Regarding this ruling:
viewtopic.php?t=57575
When do the "owned" cards become Spider Clan personalities? After they're in play, or any time they are in the deck? I thought that an owned card was any card in the deck after the game began. If that were the case, I would have thought that the Mask would have made Oni no Akuma a Spider Clan personality before entering play.
Just asking for a little more explanation.
A: "May not be negated" means it cannot be overridden. Zen Faulkes, "Mask of Fu Leng, Spider Clan, Oni no Akuma part II", 27 May 2007
