Rules Q&A
- Q: Open Emotion
Scout Training
if i use Open Emotion to make a battle strategy an engage action, can that action then be prevented by Scout Training?
A: Yes. Open Emotion makes a Battle ability from the Strategy an Engage action while it is announced and resolving. Ben Higgins, "Open Emotion and Scout Training", 19 Jul 2014 - Q: Open Emotion [IvE, Rare] 0GC Bushido Virtue*Honesty Bushido Virtue Open: Rehonor a target Samurai. Bushido Virtue Open: Target your unbowed Samurai. Show a Strategy in your hand. Once this turn, while you are the Defender, you may take a Battle action from that card as an Engage action.
Insight [IvE, Rare] 0GC Dark Virtue*Insight Dark Virtue Battle: Target your Samurai. Look at the top three cards of any Fate deck. You may rearrange them. You may take an additional Battle action to play one of them that is a Battle Strategy.
If I target my Samurai with Open Emotion's 2nd open action and show Insight. I then choose to play Insight as my Engage action, looking at my opponent's Fate deck and pick a card with a Battle Strategy amongst them. What happens? Do I get to play that card immediately (as an Engage)? Or is the opportunity wasted and just gain an extra battle action to play that card after the Engagement phase?
A: The additional Battle action granted by Insight is taken as an additional action in the Engage Segment's Action Round.
For more information, see "Action Round" on p24 of the Comprehensive Rules, and "Additional actions" on p42. Alex Jones, "Strategies: Open Emotion + Insight", 25 Apr 2014 - Q: Open Emotion as the defender, naval as the attacker, who gets first action?
A: See here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=88697
Delayed effects (Open Emotion) always come before reactions (Naval). Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion; Duty; Besiged Borderlands; etc.", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: If a dual destroys my personality can i use Duty?
A: See here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81725 Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion; Duty; Besiged Borderlands; etc.", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: Also when do i have to annouce that im playing duty?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Rulings_D#Duty: "Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Personalities..." (card text). And "before" means "immediately before." Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion; Duty; Besiged Borderlands; etc.", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: in my goblin deck, i run the spider SH, does besieged borderlands give all my goblin +2F if they are opposed, or do they have to actualy have a clan alignment?
A: See here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81731
Clan alignment not required. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion; Duty; Besiged Borderlands; etc.", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: If i focus, Arrows do not falter and then strick, and its a dual to the death and i lose the dual but my focus affect kill the challenger does my personality still die?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Challenges_and_duels: "If a Personality involved in a challenge or duel leaves play during it, the challenge or duel ends immediately without resolution."
There is no winner or loser when a duel ends without resolution.

Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion; Duty; Besiged Borderlands; etc.", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: Player, B uses Open emotion’s open action, showing final duty. Player A passes his limited/open phase. Player B uses Daidoji Murata’s ability on province 1 and 2. Player A declares an attack, assigns his infantry at province 1. Player B assigns his infantry to defend at province 1.
Player A chooses to resolve province 1 first, can Player B play Final Duty using Open Emotion’s action or does Murata negate his ability to do so.
A: Daidoji Murata does not prevent Open Emotion's additional action, because Murata only requires a player take an action or pass - not be the first regular action or pass. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion + Murata", 10 Feb 2011 - Q: (A)fter the defender has taken his Open Emotion’d action, the attacker has the opportunity to play his sneak attack, correct?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion + Murata", 10 Feb 2011 - Q: OCan I play open emotion, showing Downhill Assault, an then on the defense play Downhill Assault and follow up with Downhill Assault's additional action and then take my first action provided that no sneak or sneak-like reaction has been made?
A: Yes. No rule prohibits additional actions from triggering other additional actions. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion Clarification", 7 Feb 2011 - Q: Does Open Emotion allow the defending player to play the shown strategy before the attacker can react with Sneak Attack?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: Can Reinforce the Gates be used to negate the card strategy played by Open Emotion's ability?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: Can one play multiple copies of Open Emotion to then play multiple cards before the chance to Sneak Attack?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: If yes, do they have to be cards with different titles?
A: No.
A quick summary of the timing here:
1. Engage at Battlefield.
2. Resolve Delayed Effects triggered by engaging (Open Emotion's actions goes here).
3. The Attacker may use Reinforce the Gates (still before the Defender’s first normal action).
4. Resolve Reactions triggered by Engaging (Sneak Attack goes here).
5. First normal Battle action. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011
