Rules Q&A
- Q: I'm asking for clarification on the text "if that Personality has not straightened this battle." Does that mean during this battle anywhere, or specifically while present at this battlefield?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_B#Battle: "A battle is a process in time, as opposed to a battlefield which is a location." Zen Faulkes, "Yoritomo Naizen and Ordered Retreat", 6 Apr 2008 - Q: How does Misdirection interact with Ordered Retreat? If I have 4 units in the battle and I play Ordered Retreat, then the other player plays Misdirection, does the opponent get to choose to send 1-4 of my units home and what 1-4 units straighten?
A: The opponent would choose how many personalities to move home, but you would choose which units to straighten as the straightening is not a targeting so Misdirection does not affect it.
Ordered Retreat's wording: "Battle: Move home one or more target Personalities in your army. You may straighten a number of your units up to the number of Personalities you moved home." Doruk Özaydın, "Misdirection, Multiple Targets, Reinforce, Paneki XP4", 28 Feb 2008 - Q: Wedge - "Battle: Target one of your Personalities. You can not target cards in his unit with actions until after this battle ends. After this battle’s Resolution Segment begins, double his Force and the Force of each Follower in his unit. Destroy him after the battle ends."
Ordered Retreat - "Battle: Move home one or more target Personalities in your army. You may straighten a number of your units up to the number of Personalities you moved home."
Can I use the effect from Ordered Retreat to unbow a bowed personality that was previously targeted with Wedge?
A: Yes, assuming you sent someone home. The send-home targets. The straightening effect does not tell you to target anyone. Martin Lund, "Ordered Retreat + Wedge", 22 Aug 2007 - Q: In looking at the CR, this is what I found about the Rule of Location
The Rule of Location: If a Battle action is on a card in a unit(a Personality or attachment in play), the unit must be at the current battlefield; and any cards in units must be at the current battlefield to be legally targeted by a Battle action. (Emphasis Mine)
So, since the Battle action has to be on a card in a unit to be affected by the Rule of Location, wouldn't I be able to Straighten Anybody I want using the rule of location and Ordered Retreat? Indeed, wouldn't I be able to send home people at other battles to straighten my peeps at the current battle? (Or Send home my peeps at the current battle to straighten other personalities at other battles, etc?)
EDIT: Stupid grammar, always getting in my way *shakes fist*. Thanks!
A: Grammar lesson! http://www.arts.uottawa.ca/writcent/hyp ... icoln.html
The sentence after the semicolon is an independent clause. That being said, the straighten effect of Ordered Retreat is not targeted, and so not subject to targeting restrictions. Chris Fuchs, "Rule of Location and Ordered Retreat", 26 Jul 2007 - Q: Samurai edition rules question - Ordered Retreat is not performed, correct?
A: Correct. It has no constraints block. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 8 Jan 2024
