Rulings
- Does not change the duration of terrain effects. Bonuses that last all battle or all turn will persist if the terrain is destroyed. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 137
- Effects that do not apply until after resolution do not happen immediately (e.g., Suspended Terrain). They are scheduled immediately and will occur at their normal times regardless of whether the terrain is destroyed. Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 137
Rules Q&A
- Q: I must have missed some of the messages posted on this subject earlier...honestly I'm pretty tired of this whole Gaheris debate, but I need to know: what is the FINAL say on the Encircled Terrain/Osari Plains/Journaled Gaheris issue?
A: The Rules Team is still debating on this one. There IS no "FINAL say" yet. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 8 February 2001", 14 Feb 2001 - Q: How would it be ruled if Gaheris was attacking a player with the region Osari Plains at his province, and the opponent had a Terrain in hand that would end the battle and send all opposing personalities home, or send home a particular opposing personality home, i.e. Gaheris, upon terrain resolution?
A: Currently under discussion. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 7 February 2001", 9 Feb 2001 - Q: I was saving that can of worms for if Jeff eventually ruled that the delayed action doesn't work. With Osari Plains, the Terrain's action is no longer delayed. What then, rules, guys?
A: What then is that you give us more than 18 hours to resolve the issue, please. I get the list in digests so this list doesn't swamp my mailbox, Dave is gawdawfully busy with his new card game that goes to print this weekend, and Zen is on the other side of the globe. *grumble* Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 7 February 2001", 9 Feb 2001 - Q: No, you may not play Encircled Terrain. It would, in theory, remove him from the battle eventually, but an action needs to immediately and unconditionally remove him from the battle (and not by killing him) to be legal under his prohibition. Actions that would eventually do so are not legal, especially in a case like Encircled Terrain/Kaagi's Journal, where there are multiple card effects involved in his removal.
So Osari Plains/Encircled is out as well, right?
A: Hmm...
No. My sentence about multiple card effects was misleading. The situation that Nick had created, where multiple card effects create a state where a certain card effect *might* be legal is the reason for the immediacy test. Osari/Encircled would be legal, because it would immediately and unconditionally send Gaheris home. Without an immediacy clause, there's no way of knowing *when the action is played* whether or not it will send him home when the terrain resolves. If you cannot absolutely say that an action will or will not send him home at the instant it leaves your hand, it is *not* legal to play in a Gaheris battle. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for February 6th", 6 Feb 2001 - Q: Here's another one. Since indirect effects like the Journal's inability to target arent considered for the legality of taking the action (cf Osari Plains above), I assume it is legal to favor/Block/DPoS Gaheris (no journal) during Winter Warfare, thereby bowing him.
A: Sure. When you play the action from your hand, it thinks that it's going to send Gaheris home. That makes it legal. Something negating one of the effects that made it legal to play doesn't retroactively make it an illegal action (extenstion from Jeff's ruling on ToC/Winter Warfare, 12/10/00).
