Rules Q&A
- Q: If I got Otaku with a follower in a battle, my opponent casts Kuro's Fire with Agasha Chieh and destroys the follower can I use Otaku's ability to kill Chieh ?
Kuro's make consecutive ranged attacks so I think that Chieh must declare each one at the time, resolve it and go on.
The problem is what if Chieh wanted (made) only 1 ranged attack ? Can I use the ability ?
A: It won't change anything. The destruction is part of resolving the effects of the Kuro's Fire Action. That makes it part of "casting," and any Reactions before / when / after that destruction are still during resolution of the Action's effects, and thus Chieh is still casting. She's still at the battle for Otaku to destroy her.
Of course, killing Chieh doesn't stop the rest of Kuro's Fire's Ranged Attacks from resolving if you have more coming your way. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 December 2004", 25 Dec 2004 - Q: 2. Timing problem: Otaku's ability of "Destroying" and "Bowing" works if the "Bowed" or "Destroyed" Card is Otaku ?
A: No. Her ability does not get around the general rules prohibiting you from playing Actions on bowed cards or cards you don't control (in your Discard Pile, in this case). You can use her ability without these things happening to her, so the Cardinal Rule won't help either (Otaku doesn't need to break any rules to be useful). Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 December 2004", 15 Dec 2004 - Q: If say, Otaku is in my army, and a card in my army is destroyed by a ranged attack, does Otaku apply a ranged attack to a card opposing her, or does she destroy a card opposing her?
A: Otaku specifically cites the effects, "destroy," "bow," or "moved move."
You would apply the appropriate one of those 3 effects, not any other restrictions or additional effects related to them.
See also the email I forwarded to the List from Jeff Alexander on September 30th.
If an effect sends something home bowed, Otaku would just send something home.
If an effect destroyed something with a Force less than X (where X is the RA strength) Otaku would just destroy something.
If an effect bowed a card and prohibited it from straightening until its controller's next straighten phase, Otaku would just bow something. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 November 2004", 2 Dec 2004 - Q: If Otaku is bowed, destroyed, sent home bowed, bowed indefinitely, killed, murdered, or made to no longer exist, can she use her reaction to apply the same effect to on an opposing personality?
A: See here. Zen Faulkes, "March 2005 Ruling Archive", 8 Mar 2005 - Q: If someone were to target Otaku with an effect which bows or destroys Otaku, can she use her react?
A: No.
And I just went searching for any Otaku related posts from me on this forum and a few other places besides, because I don't remember saying anything along what is claimed. Didn't find any. I would be very curious to know when and where I said this. Zen Faulkes, "Otaku", 26 Feb 2005 - Q: couple questions from a big deck game last night: If Otaku is bowed by an action, can she use her react to bow another opposing card? Similarly: If my opponent destroys an attachment with Otaku, do I have to destroy an attachment? Or can I destroy a card? (it reads like if they destroy any card I can destroy any card? But that seems weirdly powerful.)
A: No. You can't take actions on bowed cards.
No, you don't have to destroy an attachment; any enemy card. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 6 Apr 2024
