Rules Q&A
- Q: My unbowed Mirumoto Gukochi wins a duel during battle. He uses his Reaction adding his 3C to his unit’s total Force.
If my Mirumoto Gukochi has attached a bowed Spearmen, explain me the current Force stats for each card and whole unit: - Current Force of Gukochi (I am not sure) - Current Force of Spearmen (I expect 2F) - Current Force of Unit (I expect 6F)
Can my opponent play an Overconfidence on him after Gukochi used his Reaction?
A: No. Gukochi doesn't say that he adds his Chi to HIS Force - just the Force of his UNIT.
Current Force of Gukochi - 3F Current Force of Spearmen - 2F Crurent Force of Unit - 8F
Gukochi contributes 6F to the Unit thanks to his ability, 3 from his 3F, and 3 from his 3C.
His card, however, does not have 6F. It has 3F. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 January 2005", 21 Jan 2005 - Q: I?ve got an question about the card Overconfidence. The Mrp reads is legal in Storyline Simulations. does this mean the card isn?t legal for tournaments like the EC? I wanna play a deck in which I have Overconfidence and so I need to know if that is legal or if I have to exchange it for other cards.
A: When Diamond Edition was released, Overconfidence was accidentally left off the printing sheets. Consequently, it did not have a Diamond Bug on it, and was not legal for Diamond-only Storyline Simulation Tournament formats.
So a rule was issued that made it legal to play in Diamond Format.
As soon as it was possible, Overconfidence was reprinted in Hidden City Starter Decks with the Diamond Bug, making the prior ruling a moot point. Since the Most Recent Printing of the card has the Diamond Bug, it is Diamond Legal. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 October 2004", 24 Oct 2004 - Q: Put another way, Wedge and Berzerker Rage do not actually increase force, they merely reset it based on some formula. The new value is indeed higher than the previous, but it is technically NOT a force increase, and so not eligible for force gain reactions such as Overconfidence.
A: Nope. That's completely false. Berserker Rage and Wedge both create Force Bonuses as well, typically +X where X = targets current Force at the time of doubling. They are both subject to Overconfidence to great effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 23 July 2004", 26 Jul 2004 - Q: A player has out five Crab personalities and brings into play Hida Yakomo (Oni). Can I overconfidence the oni since he gain six force
A: No. Hida Yakamo (Oni) gives himself a bunch of individual bonuses that are all too small to overconfidence.
A Clan Sword does this TO ITSELF as well. However, the Sword is an ITEM. It can not be target with Overconfidence anyway. Now the PERSONALITY holding the Sword gets - one - bonus from that item. That bonus may well be big enough to warrant Overconfidence.
While it might be convenient short-hand to refer to the stat-change resulting from Yakomo Oni's trait as a "Clan Sword," the mechanics of the bonuses are NOT the same just because the end result looks similar. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 June 2004", 30 Jun 2004 - Q: Is his trait considered a Force bonus? Can I use cards like Overconfidence and ISOTF to eliminate the bonus, if it is one? I'm pretty sure it is, since the rulebook says "Any time the current number on a card changes from value to a higher value is considered a bonus".
A: It is a Force Bonus.
Yes, you can play Overconfidence off of it.
No, In Search of the Future won't reduce the bonus, since it is from Arai to himself, and he is in the same unit as himself. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 May 2004", 20 May 2004 - Q: My opponent plays a Dai Tsuchi in Hida Tenshu. I can use overconfidence on him at this moment???
A: Yes. He's gaining a Force Bonus (+3) greater than his printed Chi (1). Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 May 2004", 17 May 2004 - Q: Can Overconfidence target a Personality who attaches a Weapon during the player's Action Phase?
A: Sure. So long as the Weapon is giving a Force Bonus greater than the Personality's printed Chi. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 April 2004", 25 Apr 2004 - Q: Ok I have heard a mixxed bag of answers regarding this one, justr wondering if I can get an official answer. can overconfidence be played to bow a wedged personality before they take the province. thanks for your time.
A: Assuming the Personality is getting a Force Bonus from Wedge greater than or equal to his or her printed chi, sure.
Wedge gives the Force Bonus at the beginning of the Resolution Segment, well before you compare the total Force of each army. Overconfidence will gank a Wedge'd personality some good, and probably result in your entire army being wiped out wholesale.
And you can't even play Fall on Your Knees to stop it since it is no longer the Battle Action Segment. Wedge is a gambling man's card, to be sure. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 April 2004", 21 Apr 2004 - Q: Lets say you Wedge one of your guys with a weapon or armor attached. At the beginning of resolution, they play a overconfidence in reaction to the doubling of force. Can you then play an armed in ready to straighten that guy (along with all the other people with weapon or armor)? So basically is the armed and ready a blanketing effect that doesnt target (since it says all), or does the specifying of your people and only the ones with weapons or armor, make it targeted?
A: "If no player, under any circumstance, has to choose what gets affected, the action is not targeted." (L5R FAQ, Section 2, "Clarifying the Rules")
It shouldn't target. No one gets to choose what it affects, ever, unless I'm missing something here. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 April 2004", 20 Apr 2004 - Q: Questions that came up in games over the weekend (I wanted the official word so that I don't make any miscalls during Kotei season):
1. Togashi Jusai vs. Overconfidence This is an ancient ruling that I don't remember the final word on. If I give Jusai 5 fire tokens as 1 action does it count as a 5 point bonus or 5 one point bonuses?
A: That will be 5 separate bonuses on 1 force each. Each individual token grants its own bonus effect, and none of the bonuses are considered to be from the Action that created the tokens.
"An action creating a "+X " token is not an action providing a bonus to a given stat. [VRD, 26 July 2001]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Bonuses and Penalties") Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 April 2004", 7 Apr 2004 - Q: Another way to put it is: Does Double Chi make two seperate bonuses, or add a bonus to itself before it is applied. This would also have relevence for Overconfidence.
A: Well, it would only have relevance if the Focus cards were Face Up in the duel. Unknown values aren't elligable, even if you can extrapolate some sort of mathematical minimum. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 April 2004", 4 Apr 2004 - Q: Just wanted to verify, If Kyofu issue a test of might, or other duel that compares force, and then reacts with a Private Dojo you could play Overconfidence on him then right?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: I was wondering if Overconfidence could bow an opponents personality when they play a shosuro tech on its battle abbility (and gain more force than chi) or a berserkers rage. Both cards state the force is set to value x that's what has me confused.
A: Changing one number to another counts as giving a bonus if the new value is higher than the old one. [DE p. 62] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 27 Feb. 2004", 28 Feb 2004 - Q: For AEG-L5R Organizers:
Since that Overconfidence is accidentally not included on the reprints of DE, is there any plans this card could be reprinted intentionally on the next DE Prints or Expansions?
A: It will appear in Hidden City starters. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 Feb. 2004", 27 Feb 2004 - Q: If Hitomi Daisetsu casts Chasing Osano Wo on himself and I wish to play Overconfidence in response, would it be legal for me to pass on my opportunity to play a reaction, wait for my opponent to utilize Daisetsu's reaction, and then play the Overconfidence?
A: It's not only legal, it's mandatory that you wait. You CAN'T do it in the other order. Costs are paid before effects happen in L5R, so a Reaction to a cost (Daisetsu) must come before a Reaction to an effect (Overconfidence). Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: *Bawaru no Oni reads: "At the beginning of the Resolution Segment, straighten Bawaru no Oni if there are any unbowed opposing Personalities."
*Wedge reads : "Battle: Target one of your units in this battle. You cannot target that unit or cards in it with actions until after the battle ends. Destroy the unit when the battle ends. If the unit is still in this army at the beginning of the Resolution Segment, double the Force of the Personality and each Follower in the unit."
*Overconfidence reads: "Reaction: When a personality has recieved from an action a force bonus more than or equal to his or her printed chi, bow the personality. The Personality cannot straighten during his or her controller's next straighten phase."
If a Wedged Bawaru no Oni is Overconfidenced, can his trait straighten him?
A: Yes. Overconfidence only prohibits straightening "during his or her controller's next straighten phase." [card text]
Notice that it's important that the active player choose to apply Wedge's Force increase before Bawaru's trait. They both happen "at the beginning of the Resolution Segment". If the active player declares that Bawaru's trait applies first, it can't help him. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 4 Feb. 2004", 5 Feb 2004 - Q: Does Overconfidence target?
Yes.
Why? It neither says "target" nor gives choice.
A: More than one card can receive a force bonus at once. A choice is then required. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 December 2003, Part 2", 7 Dec 2003 - Q: My opponent plays Wedge on a Bawaru no Oni. At the begining of resolution I play Overconfidence to bow the Oni. Does Bawaru's trait then straigten him before total force is compared?
A: Both Wedge's bonus and the oni's trait occur at the beginning of resolution, so the Third Cardinal Rule kicks in. Active player chooses. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 December 2003", 6 Dec 2003 - Q: Does Overconfidence target?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 5 December 2003, Part 2", 6 Dec 2003 - Q: Can I bow a Wedging Personality with Overconfidence [?]
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 November 2003", 23 Nov 2003 - Q: If a Personality attaches the Celestial Sword of their Clan, can Overconfidence be played as a Reaction?
A: As long as the force bonus from the Sword will be greater than the personalities Chi, yes. Vaughn Derderian, "Post for June 19, 2003", 19 Jun 2003 - Q: From the Rulings Archive entry on Overconfidence:
May be played during a duel of force if it is known that a focus is sufficiently large enough to be a legal trigger.
Does this mean it can only be played if focus values are played up? Or can it be played immediately after the focus values are revealed during a strike?
A: Reactions must be played as soon as their triggers are satisfied. [GE p. 48] Focusing in a duel adds to the duelist's stat as soon as the focus card is played. [GE p. 61] So, Overconfidence must be played when the focus happens. If the focus card is face- down, you cannot wait until you see it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: 2. Can these be overconfidenced?
Overconfidence specifies a force bonus from an Action.
A: Not by the Most Recent Printing, it doesn't. Jeff Alexander, "post for 11 November 2002", 12 Nov 2002 - Q: ... Does Overconfidence work?
A: Shinjo Technique cannot redirect Overconfidence. No redirection effect can ever work on something which specifies only one possible target. [AOF rulebook p. 47] Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 February 2002", 20 Feb 2002 - Q: Yes. By MRP, Overconfidence can be played after any Force bonus, not just one which is the direct result of an action.
Is this another Reversal Jeff, here is the info from the Archive
Attaching an Item or Follower that gives "+X" to a stat is not an action giving a force bonus. The force bonus comes directly from the attached card, not the action.
A: It's not a reversal of that ruling at all. Overconfidence's text changed in Gold and, as a result, that ruling no longer applies to it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2002", 5 Feb 2002 - Q: 2) May I react with Overconfidence to a Shosuro Technique? This is considered a bonus? May I use In search of the Future to reduce it to 0?
A: Setting a stat directly to another, higher number is considered giving it a bonus. Overconfidence may be played if the increase is large enough, and In Search of the Future will reduce the bonus to 0. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 February 2002", 5 Feb 2002 - Q: So, does this mean that Overconfidence can be used to bow someone attaching the Celestial Sword again?
A: With the MRP of Overconfidence, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 November 2001", 22 Nov 2001 - Q: Overconfidence targets printed chi, so if my oppent use strength of purity on one of thier people, can I still play overconfidence??
A: If the Personality's printed Chi is 3 or less, yes. Strength of Purity does not increase printed Chi. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 21 September 2001", 24 Sep 2001 - Q: Reactions like 'overconfidence' now target? What, personality or the effect?
A: Yes. What is targeted depends on what's affected. In the case of Overconfidence, it's the Personality. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 August 2001", 10 Aug 2001 - Q: Can I play 'overconfidence' when a celestial sword is played?
A: No. See Rules Archive, General Rules, Bonuses and Penalties. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 8 August 2001", 10 Aug 2001 - Q: Hi! Is the force doubling ability on the The Citadel of the Hiruma considered a force bonus for actions like Overconfidence etc? Thanks!
A: Yes! Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 30th", 30 Jul 2001 - Q: I saw the recent ruling regarding attaching items with force bonuses, in regards to Overconfidence.
My question is: Would the same rule apply to force bonus tokens? Specifically, I'm thinking of Togashi Genshou/Hitomi Juppun with a Dragon Tattoo. Does he get the force from the tokens?
A: Yes. Attachment actions appear to no longer give bonuses or penalties in and of themselves. Dragon Tattoo attaches tokens. What those tokens do appears to be irrelevant. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 27th", 27 Jul 2001 - Q: The rules archive states:
a.. Attaching an Item or Follower that gives "+X" to a stat is not an action giving a force bonus. The force bonus comes directly from the attached card, not the action. [REVERSAL, JA, 5 July 2001]
So Overconfidence should not bow a personality for attaching an item or follower, as is stated on the Overconfidence added rules. Am I right?
A: The Archive currently says that Overcon *cannot* be used against a personality attaching a '+X' Item or Follower. That's the correct ruling. You probably had a cached copy of the older Archive that still said otherwise, I'm guessing. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 25th", 25 Jul 2001 - Q: Overconfidence now targets, correct (incidentally making it less than useful while Enemy of My Enemy is in effect). . . ?
A: Absolutely. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for July 20th", 20 Jul 2001 - Q: Can a Yodin Sensei player play Enough Talk! and Overconfidence now?
A: No. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 6-9 July 2001", 19 Jul 2001 - Q: Do the Gold Edition rules regarding whether an action is targetted or not cause Overconfidence and Enough Talk! to be targetted actions now, thus making them unplayable with Yodin Sensei?
A: Yes to both. Targeting is now pretty much the default for actions. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 July 2001", 12 Jul 2001 - Q: Zen said in a previous thread that Loruko can be Overconfidence-d when coming into play if you control at least 3 regions. But the Accumulated Rulings says: "While traits of a card are always active, even while the card is not in play, the traits of a card that is not in play do not affect anything except that card itself." Wouldn't this mean that Loruko gains the force bonus while in the deck/province everytime a Region comes into play? Therefore he couldn't be the target of Overconfidence. Does the same reasoning apply to Kitsuki Otojiro and Moto Akikazu? Thank you!
A: Whoops. True. Zen Faulkes, "Loruko + Overconfidence again", 3 Apr 2005 - Q: if i put in play Shinjo loruko, and have more regions than her Chi, can she get Overconfideced?
A: No. Traits are always on, even out of play. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Shinjo Loruko + Overconfidence", 2 Apr 2005
