Rules Q&A
- Q: Palace of the Emerald Champion: Unique You cannot achieve an Honor Victory while the Palace of the Emerald Champion is in play. Reaction: When this province is about to be destroyed, discard the top ten card s of your Fate deck. The Province is not destroyed.
Since this does not say "Do X TO Do Y", but rather "do X. Do Y.", does that mean that my province is indistructable while Palace of the Emerald Champion is attached even if I have 0 cards in my fate deck?
A: Fire & Shadow is the first set to use the "costs come before 'to'" template. [GE rulebook] The Palace of the Emerald Champion comes from Honor Bound, which is two sets before F&S. The templating for Honor Bound often used the first sentence for the cost. Sorry. If you can't pitch ten cards, you can't use it.
-- Jeff Alexander Lead Designer, L5R CCG Alderac Entertainment Group Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: Hey everyone, I just have a quick rules question : If a player has the Palace of the Emerald Champion out, which states that that player cannot win by an honor victory, does he have to destroy a province when return of fu leng pops?
A: Yes. Return of Fu Leng cares about your current ability (or lack thereof) to achieve an Honor Victory. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 30-31 March 2001", 6 Apr 2001 - Q: If my opponent has Palace of the Emerald Champion in play, and my Return of Fu-Leng comes into play, does he automatically lose the province?
A: Yes. Although, if his rightmost province happens to be the one with the Palace on it, he just has to discard the top ten cards of his deck. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 23rd", 23 Nov 2000
