Rules Q&A
- Q: Can a personality who is bowed be targetted by actions that bow him? For instance, can I Palm Strike a bowed, weaponless opponent in order to play Ring of Air?
A: There is no problem with that. Bowing a bowed Personality won't have any effect, however, when you try to do it. Still, it does count as a successful action / casting / etc. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: Since blackened claws or yakomo's claw does not have the word weapon in it, can palm strike target them.
A: The caster or the opponent? In any case, those items are not Weapons. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 26 November 2003, Part 2", 27 Nov 2003 - Q: Palm Strike, it says to target one of your personalities but do you then target the opposing personality you wish to bow?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 10 November 2003", 10 Nov 2003 - Q: With respect to Palm Strike, is bowing still an inherent cost of Ranged Attacks (eg Akasha, once per game, can gain the ability, Battle: Ranged 2 Attack)
A: Yes. That hasn't changed. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 20 August 2002", 21 Aug 2002 - Q: This is a request for clarification of the wording of a Broken Blades card: Palm Strike.
According to the rulebook, I have to bow a Monk or Shugenja in order to cast a Kiho. This Kiho lacks the words, "Bow one of your ...." Instead, it says, "Target one of your ...." This seems much like the Fire and Air intent/MRP.
So, the questions that I have are:
1) Do I have to bow the Monk to cast this Kiho?
A: No. This is ERRATA. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 August 2002", 20 Aug 2002 - Q: Hi rules team! Its been awhile! Hope you are all well!
Anyway. I was playing my monksai and I noticed with regards to Palm Strike its ability.
Kiho Battle: Target your unbowed Monk without a Weapon. Bow a target enemy Personality without a Weapon.
Now, because it does not specify unbowed monk personality can I target an unbowed monk follower, such a Fudo's Fiends or Brothers of Jade as they would be both an unbowed monk and without a weapon and then resolve the rest of my actions?
Thanks for everything!
A: You may indeed target your Monk Follower with Palm Strike. Alex Jones, "Palm Strike and Monk followers", 12 May 2014 - Q: Hi,
I have this follower in the current battlefield and is unbowed:
Fudo's Fiends Keywords Fudo • Monk • Expendable
Can I play this?
Palm Strike Kiho Battle: Target your unbowed Monk without a Weapon. Bow a target enemy Personality without a Weapon.
Thank you
A: Yes, you can.
There is no prohibition against targeting Followers with Kiho Strategies, if the Follower has the proper keyword(s). Brook Cunningham, "Kihos with followers", 26 Jan 2014 - Q: I play Palm Strike and, in reaction, my opponent plays Kumade. How does this resolve?
A: Kumade is irrelevant. Targeting is over by the time the Reaction occurs.
Rules, Abilities, Targeting: "If any of an action's targeting becomes illegal at any point after all targeting and reactions to targeting occurs, the effects of the action still occur, subject only to interference with paying costs." Zen Faulkes, "Palm Strike vs. Kumade", 14 Jul 2007 - Q: Is it legal to cast\redirect a Palm Strike on a bowed personality or it wouldn't because all effects are already known to fail?
A: Ask the redirection question: Could you aim it there in the first place? (Diamond rules, pg. 74). Yes, because nothing on Palm Strike requires an unbowed target. Zen Faulkes, "Palm strike and bowed personalities", 30 Mar 2005
