Rules Q&A
- Q: Peaceful Interlude
Limited: After each battle resolution in which you destroyed one or more Provinces or units as the winner, you may target a Personality; if you do, dishonor him, and his controller loses 2 Honor.
Destroyed is past tense. Does this mean the effect happens from the point you play this, as in any time yuo destroy a province from now, does it apply retroactively, so for any that you have already destroyed, or does it apply both retroactively and for any future provinces?
Thanks.
A: Peaceful Interlude's action creates an Ongoing Indefinite Conditional Effect, which has a duration of "until the end of the turn" by default. Such an effect occurs immediately after its trigger occurs throughout its duration. It doesn't look back and trigger retroactively, and it doesn't continue past the turn its played, due to not having a stated duration (such as, "Until the end of the game, after each battle...").
What you want to look at to tell what triggers the effect is not just "destroyED", but rather the entire point in time, "After each battle resolution in which you destroyed one or more Provinces or units as the winner". Brook Cunningham, "Peaceful Interlude", 26 Oct 2008 - Q: I played a Peaceful Interlude, and later in the Attack Phase I destroy a province. I trigger the conditional indefinite effect and try to target a personality of the other player. Can he react with Misdirection / Seat of Power to choose or change the target of the effect?
A: Seat of Power, yes (assuming a Champion or Daimyo is involved). Peaceful Interlude is an action, and it's targeting, which is the trigger for Seat of Power.
Misdirection, no. http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_M#Misdirection: "The timing point of Misdirection's action trigger is: during the other player's action's Required Targeting Step, in between the last required targeting in the constraints block (if any) and the first required targeting in the effects block (if any)." It cannot respond to delayed targeting.
