Rules Q&A
- Q: Follow up question 1: If Asako Yuya has a spell attached and later Retires, can she still bow the spell to cast it?
A: No. She must be able to cast the Spell in the first place in order to cast it bow bowing it instead of herself. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2003", 3 May 2003 - Q: And this means that Asako Yuya really _can_ cast the same spell twice?
A: No, because of the Spell exception. Jeff Alexander, "post for 4 December 2002", 5 Dec 2002 - Q: Can a bowed shugenja cast a spell that doesn't require bowing (Such as the Wolf's Proposal?) How 'bout Asako Yuya?
A: No. No. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 September 2002", 25 Sep 2002 - Q: In open, with the new ruling on Asako Yuya, Can you bow an Essence of Air attached to her, and keep IT bowed, or only the shugenja will work? Will the Spell stay bowed? Thanks!
A: Any spell with a duration of "while this shugenja remains bowed" or "until this shugenja straightens" will end immediately if the shugenja does not actually bow when casting it. Regarding Asako Yuya
Can she cast spells while bowed?
By bowing the Spell instead of herself? Yes.
I'm confused as to the reasoning behind this. The rulebook says: "Only shugenja can attach and cast spells." which implies to me that the shugenja is performing the action (and not the spell as spells can't cast themselves).
The rulebook also states that "Once a card or Stronghold bows, it cannot take another action until it straightens, not even an action that does not bow the card."
Sure the cost of bowing the shugenja means that she doesn't have to bow to cast the spell (she bows the spell instead), but I'm not sure how she performs the action in the first place.
A: This is one for the Rules Team, then. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 June 2002", 8 Jun 2002 - Q: My first few days on this list, so I don't know if this has been already addressed:
Asako Yuya's text says that she can bow a spell instead of herself to satisfy the 'Bow a Shugenja' part of the cost. She also states that a Spell cannot be cast while it is bowed (since it has an Action written in the basic types).
What I am wondering is, can she bow to cast a spell, then have a spell on herself bow to cast itself?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 May 2002", 9 May 2002 - Q: e.g. Asako Yuya only has Walking the Way on her. She is casting it with her trait to bow the spell instead of herself as a cost of casting it. What happens?
A: You would bow and destroy the Spell. All costs other than bowing the Shugenja must be paid normally. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 April 2002", 4 Apr 2002 - Q: Hello guys, question under gold edition rules. Does Asako Yuya, can bow the spell and herself for 2 shugenjas for rituals, like Importune Kami ?
A: No. She substitutes bowing the Spell for herself, you can't go back and bow her additionally. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 13 Nov 2024
