Rules Q&A
- Q: Plains of the Maiden After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
Shiotome Halls After a battle's resolution ends, if a province or enemy army was destroyed during it and you control a unit in the winning army: You may gain Honor equal to the number of Battle Maidens in that army.
As far as I know, Plains of the Maiden triggers once for destroying an army and again for the destroying the province.
Does Shiotome Halls (and by Extension, Tadaji Sensei) also trigger twice if you destroy both an army and province during the same resolution?
A: No.
Plains of the Maiden triggers off the effects "destroy an army" and "destroy a province". If you destroy both in one battle's resolution, the trait will trigger twice.
Shiotome Halls (and Tadaji Sensei), on the other hand, triggers at a step in the battle sequence, so it can only trigger once per battle. Alex Jones, "Plains of the Maiden versus Shiotome Halls", 30 Aug 2013 - Q: I have a question that arose from a game I played earlier where my opponent's last card was Words have Strength and I had won the battle as the attacker. My honor was at -19 before resolution and I had a dishonored maiden along with another maiden. I was wondering after resolution does the attacker choose which resolution goes first? What I mean is can you choose to gain honor from Plains of the maiden for killing the enemy army or even destroying the province before doing the rehonoring process? Also, when does the reaction for Words have Strength go off? I'm going to guess it would be after the attacker's first resolution. This is all important to know because it could mean the difference between losing the game or staying alive possibly for another turn by preventing your honor from dropping to -20.
A: Well, first of all rehonoring is never an issue when it comes to Plains of the Maiden. If you check the rules for rehonoring here, you'll see that the box doesn't trigger rehonoring. You will gain the two honor.
Now, when it comes to resolution, you're going to want to look at the steps of battle resolution here. You destroy the province at 2ii, which triggers Plains of the Maiden (gain 2, putting you at -17). At 2iii, you rehonor your dishonorable Battle Maiden instead of gaining honor for destroying however many cards at resolution (minimum 1, to trigger Words Have Strength). At this point, the battle finishes resolving, which is the trigger for Words Have Strength. Your opponent may now play it, dropping you to -20.
Edit: It's been pointed out to me that I should've given a bit more clarity in regards to one of the hypotheticals you posed. Because Plains of the Maiden triggers off both army and province destruction, if you destroy both the army and a province, you would gain the two points of honor twice, putting you to -15, and resulting in Words Have Strength only dropping you to -18. Jon Palmer, "Words have Strength and Plains of the Maiden Resolution", 29 Jan 2013 - Q: I've got a question about Moksha Patam's trait and the Plains of the Maiden trait together. If I attack with people equipped with Moksha Patams and I'm able to destroy an enemy army and raise a province in the same battle, will the honor gains calculated at resolution be considered 3 separate gains for the purpose of the Moksha's trait? So basically anyone holding a Moksha would gain 3 force after resolution in that scenario? I do know that Plains of the Maiden and destroying enemy cards/province at resolution counts as 3 honor gains but wanted clarification if your units only gain 1 force, 2 force or 3 force after resolution in that scenario.
A: Moksha Patam's trait says "After an action resolves," so it won't trigger after the honour gain from Plains of the Maiden's trait, nor after the honour gain in the Rulebook for destroying an enemy army in battle resolution. Alex Jones, "Moksha Patam and Plains of the Maiden", 15 Jan 2013 - Q: Plains of the Maiden: After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
Is the honor gained from the trait at resolution affected by strategies or events that, lets say, reduce or negate honor gains except for battle resolution?
A: Yes.
While the honor gains from Plains of the Maiden happen in the Resolution Segment they are not from the Resolution of the battle themselves.
Also, kudos on your crafty way to ask about On without mentioning it, thus sneaking around our restriction on questions from TSE. Ben Higgins, "Plains of the Maiden", 3 Jun 2012 - Q: I recently re-read this ruling and now I'm a little confused.
During the Resolution Segment (the attacker wins) the battle maidens crush an army in step 2i and the stronghold triggers gaining some honor. Then they crush the province during step 2ii and the stronghold triggers gaining even more honor. Then in step 2iii they gain honor for each card they crushed during step 2i and as far as I can tell that effect comes from battle resolution itself.
The exception for dishonorable maidens states that "Before a player with one or more dishonorable Personalities in his or her army gains Honor from destroying enemy cards in battle resolution, all such dishonorable Personalities are rehonored, an effect that substitutes for the Honor gain."
What I'm confused about is the exception for re-honoring; does it only apply to step 2iii? If if only applies to step 2iii, then I see why the previous ruling is correct but it seems to me like the exception should trigger whenever there is honor gain during battle resolution if the attacker wins.
The other parts of resolution (the defender wins) specially state when the exception applies.
A: Yes, the re-honoring from honor gain will only apply to step 2iii, as neither gain from Plains of the Maiden meets the conditions for rehonoring. Jon Palmer, "Re: Plains of the Maiden - Twice in one battle resolution?", 22 May 2012 - Q: If I use The Perfect Moment: May I assign to multiple provinces? May I choose which one I destroy, or does it have to be the first one I win? Can I still destroy the defending army even though the province will not be destroyed? I believe that you can assign to multiple provinces and you can destroy armies if they defend. But, I believe that you cannot choose which province is destroyed, it will be the first one you have enough force since the card does not give you a choice. Please correct me if I am wrong.
(The question is because of a player who wishes to use Plains of the Maiden and wants to gain extra honor.)
The Perfect Moment Reaction: After the end of an Attack Phase in which you were the Defender: Create an additional Attack Phase with the previous phase's Attacker as the Defender. During this Attack Phase, you will not destroy more than one of the Defender's provinces, and your Personalities may not assign and will not move unless they are Paragons or Battle Maidens.
A: 1. Yes 2. It must be the first one that meets the conditions for destruction 3. Yes Jon Palmer, "The Perfect Moment confusion", 2 Apr 2012 - Q: If i have two battle maidens and my opponent defends with 1 personalitly. We both pass. i have more force, so i gain 2 honor for destroying his personaility at battle res, then another 2 cause i got two battle maidens. Now my question is if my two personalities take the province also do i gain another 2 honor?
A: Answered here. Alex Jones, "Plains of the Maiden", 28 Feb 2012 - Q: After you destroy a province or army in battle resolution as the Attacker: Gain Honor equal to the number of your Battle Maidens at the current battlefield.
1. Do I gain honor twice: for destroying an army and another time for destroying a province or just once?
2. Does the honor gain from this trait rehonor my dishonored personalities in battle resolution?
A: 1. *sigh*
2. No, because trait trait doesn't target and isn't performed by any of the Personalities. Your Stronghold's trait will give you honour regardless of whether your Battle Maidens are honourable or dishonourable. See Physically marked card states, Honorable and dishonorable. Alex Jones, "Plains of the Maiden - Twice in one battle resolution?", 14 Feb 2012 - Q: [Legacy/OBH] Does the honor gain from Tadaji sensei stack with... Plains of the Maiden/Shiotome Halls?
A: Yes, you get both. Even though the effects and triggers are the same, they are still two separate cards/effects. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 2 Dec 2025
