Rules Q&A
- Q: Regarding this:
"Imperial Gift's selection is not optional - if there is an item in your deck, you must take it."
There's a ruling setting a precedent in CE where you could choose to not select any card. See this ruling for a situation where searching for a card wasn't optional (Planned Adversity) but Alex said that you could choose to not select any such card and just shuffle the deck.
Is that ruling still valid under EE rules?
A: The CR on Search has been updated. You no longer need to choose a card even if you find one. Jon Palmer, "Re: Searching and not selecting to find", 6 Apr 2012 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=87367
Here is a follow up question. Let's say that I used Planned Adversity and failed to find a holding during my "search"
Can I then still use the Head of Fudo to "look" at the top 4 cards of my dynasty deck and if there is a Fudo holding there and put it into play (bowed) ignoring its gold cost?
A: Yes.
Glossary, Look: Effects that let you only "look" at certain cards in a deck (such as the top card, bottom card, or top five cards) are not considered to be "searching" the whole deck. Alex Jones, "failing to find - looking vs searching", 17 Nov 2010 - Q: What happens if I play Planned Adversity and search for an Acrobat Troupe but don't have the 6 gold to pay for the Troupe? Does the Troupe get discarded or shuffled back into the deck?
Also, can I fail to find a holding to put into play even if I have one in the deck and can pay for it? Sometimes I just want to shuffle my dynasty deck.

See Glossary, Search: If an effect directs a player to search for a card and play it, and it cannot be played, it is discarded instead. If a player searches for a particular description of card and does not select any, the search effect fails, with special consequences. For the rest of the game, any of his or her further attempts to search for that description of card will fail, even if a card matching that description re-enters the deck or other searched area.
