Rules Q&A
- Q: Shadow Play Battle:Target your Personality: Target an enemy attachment. You may transfer it to your Personality if he is a Ninja; otherwise destroy it. You may move your Personality home.
It doesn't say anything on the card about ignoring attachment restrictions when attaching cards (unlike Pokku EXP).
Does this mean that a Ninja Personality wouldn't be able to transfer and attach a follower with an honor requirement greater than the personal honor of the Ninja Personality? They could obviously still destroy it, but this came up when he tried to steal an Imperial Elite Guard with his 0 PH Ninja.
Thanks.
A: Correct.
See Glossary, Transfer: A player does not need to pay the card's costs when transferring it, but does need to meet requirements and restrictions of attachment, including restrictions on control of the card (e.g. Unique or Singular). Alex Jones, "Shadow Play vs Follower Honor Requirement", 14 Feb 2011 - Q: I found this http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=68737&p=888820&hilit=pokku#p888996 talking about Pokku and his ability to attach items, ignoring restrictions.
The question arises from having Pokku -Exp with Armor of the Ryu attached. My opponent attacks with Oni Bozu with attached Armor of the Ryu, I defend with said Pokku -Exp. My first action is to use Pokku -Exp's ability to take and attach his Armor of the Ryu.
From the CR: Unique A card with the Unique keyword will not enter play for, or otherwise become controlled by, a player who controls a Unique card with the same title.
Conditions All conditions that limit whether a card can enter play, including effects from other cards and from the rules, are restrictions. Examples: “Can not attach to a Samurai,” honor requirements, the Loyal and Unique keywords, or “Can only enter play if you have lost a Province this game.”
Pokku (Experienced) * Reads, "Pokku 4F/3C -HR 6G 1PH Shadowlands • Nonhuman • Goblin • Scout • Experienced • Unique After Pokku enters play: Lose 3 Honor. Battle: Transfer a target enemy attachment to Pokku, ignoring restrictions on attaching. Fear Battle: Even if Pokku is bowed: Move him home." [MRP, Celestial Edition, 29 June 2009]
My question is: Is the check for "Unique" a restriction on attaching an item, or a restriction on bringing an item into play on my side?
And if the latter, Does Pokku -Exp's ability "bring it into play" on my side, thus checking to see if I have the same item in play already? - if it does check for "Unique" again and Pokku -Exp can't attach it, can I target it with his ability? - Is it even a legal target for the ability? - Does it change control and then get discarded?
Thanks in advance
A: Unique is a restriction on bringing an item into play on your side. This is not relevant, though, because Pokku exp isn't bringing the item into play, he's transfering it. However, Unique also includes "or otherwise become controlled by", which includes taking control of other players' cards. This isn't a restriction on attaching the card, it's a restriction on controlling the card, and Pokku exp doesn't ignore this restriction.
The item is a legal target for Pokku's ability, however, as the Good Faith Rule does not require that transfer effects must be able to succeed. If you target the item, nothing happens and the action fails. Alex Jones, "Pokku Exp and Unique items", 9 Jul 2009 - Q: Can Pokku (xp) use his ability to take a Maga-yari?
A: He wishes! Those things are wicked heavy, and Kensai and Paragons have notoriously strong grips.
In seriousness, no he cannot.
His ability ignores restrictions, but Maga-yari's trait is a continuous effect, negating any transfer effect that attempts to move it.
Now, it's always legal for him to TRY to grab it. And who knows? He might just succeed one day... with a little Determination. Brook Cunningham, "Pokku and Maga-yari", 22 Dec 2008 - Q: Hi there,
When judging I was asked about the following situation.
Player A attacks with a random personality A, which had an Attachment (lets say a weapon costing 2 Gold). Player B has an unbowed Fortified Camp in play and defends with Pokku xp -> a battle ensures, Player B takes the first action and uses Pokku's printed Battleaction to transfer the Weapon to Pokku xp. Player A then destroys Pokku.
Can Player B use the reaction of Fortified Camp (assuming he has a legal target to attach the weapon to) ?
What was confusing for me was the fact, that Player B controls the weapon (A is just the owner now) and it clearly is an effect of your opponent, so you (normally) should be able to use Fortified Camps's reaction. But ...right in the moment, when the Weapon is destroyed, it's not actually attached to Pokku anymore ("after...destroys...it's personality") and thus not anymore "Player B's attachment", because the weapon is not attached anymore, so Fortified camp has no valid trigger anymore.
So I'm kinda unsure about the exact timing of a personality's attachments being destroyed due to the personality being destroyed (and if you can take a reaction like Fortified camp inbetween)
Thanks for your time,
---------------------
Just to be sure:
Same example as above, just that Player A "only" destroys _just the Weapon_ with an action:
In that case B can't take the reaction printed on fortified camp, can he ? (reasoning is above - weapon not attached to Pokku xp. anymore, so it's not player B's weapon and thus there is no valid trigger for the reaction)
A: Because the Reaction on Fortified Camp is after the item is destroyed, the item's owner is the one who gets to use it if the item alone is destroyed (see Your, http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_X-Z). It won't matter if the Personality is controlled by another player, because "its Personality" refers back to "your attachment." Zen Faulkes, "Pokku exp. and Fortified camp", 29 Nov 2008
