Rules Q&A
- Q: Can two different fortifications be attached to one province? For example, an Empty Crevasse and a Poorly Placed Garden? Or only one fortification per province?
A: You can have as many as you want, provided they all have different titles. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: BTW, you can buy a Poorly Placed Garden with the SH or a marketplace and a small farm.
related rules question: so fortifications are considered holdings?
A: Absolutely. Fortifications, just like Retainers, are a subset of Holdings in general. Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for August 22nd, Part Two", 22 Aug 2001 - Q: In 20F Arc we currently have 3 non-Gold-producing Fortifications. Poorly Placed Garden Tunnel Network Kaiu-Built DefensesAll of them have clearly the intended to enter the game unbowed. The first two had the Fortification trait do that, the other one uses the phrase: "This Holding enters play unbowed".
With the update of the Fortification trait the first two changed their functionality. So couldn't you simply add the sentence "Non-Gold-producing Fortifications enter play unbowed" or even more general "Non-Gold-producing Holdings enter play unbowed" to the Comprehensive Rules? Because I suspect that was the intend behind the update of the Fortification keyword.
And sorry if this isn't the right forum for something like that.
A: If Design intends to revert the first two Fortifications to their pre-20F functionality, they will do so via MRP or errata. There's not much else I can do in terms of "rules" on it. If you wish to lobby them to do so, this isn't really the place - you can post it in the main forum. Jon Palmer, "non-Gold-producing Fortifications", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: I've noticed that some fortifications from 20 Festivals have a new rules reminder: (Fortifications attach, bowed, to the Province from which they entered play.) for example Labor Crew.
How will that affect older fortifications like Poorly Placed Garden that has a different reminder: (Fortifications attach, straightened, to the Province from which they entered play.) ?
Will it enter play straightened or bowed?
A: In 20F, Fortifications will enter play bowed by default (this is on the list of Rules changes). This will retroactively affect any older Fortifications, and may make reminder text obsolete (such as that on Poorly Placed Garden). Jon Palmer, "Fortifications - new rules reminder", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: Are Fortifications Yoritomo Mikaru brings into play bowed?
Example: I use Mikaru's ability to buy a Poorly Placed Garden. Mikaru's abiliy states "Recruit a target Holding in your Province (entering play bowed), for 1 less Gold." while the Fortification trait is "Fortifications attach, straightened, to the Province from which they entered play."
Which card takes precedence? Will I be able to bow the PPG for Honor?
A: Mikaru's "(entering play bowed)" text is reminder text, and as such is not actually an effect of his Limited ability.
As such, any Holdings brought into play by his ability will follow the normal method of entering play for that Holding, including coming into play unbowed if they are a Fortification. Ben Higgins, "Mikaru buying a Fortification", 20 Dec 2013
