Rules Q&A
- Q: Hi,
If I use Preserving Honor and my opponent negate it useing the Undetectable Enemy will this negate the ation it self or it is treated as negating bowing or movement and in resolution the personality is removed from the game?
Preserving Honor: Battle: Target an enemy Personality at the current battlefield: His controller chooses either to bow him, or to choose another location and move him there. If the bowing or movement is negated, remove the Personality from the game.
Undetectable Enemy: Reaction: After another player's action targets your Oni: Negate its effects.
Thx for reply
A: Undetectable enemy negates ALL the effects of Preserving Honor, INCLUDING the conditional effect that would remove the Personality from the game. Brook Cunningham, "Preserving Honor and undetectable enemy", 3 Sep 2012 - Q: didn't know how to search for this question.
can i choose to bow a bowed personality with Preserving Honor and My Enemy's Mercy? or do i have to choose the other effect of movement. thanks!
-- Preserving Honor Battle: Target an enemy Personality at the current battlefield: His controller chooses either to bow him, or to choose another location and move him there. If the bowing or movement is negated, remove the Personality from the game.
My Enemy's Mercy Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Samurai and target an enemy Personality with equal or lower Personal Honor: The enemy leader chooses to either bow him or move him home. Gain 2 Honor.
A: You may choose to bow a Personality that is already bowed, unless the wording on an effect specifies otherwise. In both of these cases, if the Personality is already bowed you may choose to bow him again. Jon Palmer, "Effects Clarification", 24 Apr 2012 - Q: If I use Consideration on one of my personalities and then during battle my opponent plays Preserving Honor on him what would happen?
A: Would he be removed from the game? B: Would he negate the whole action?
Consideration: Open: Choose your performing unbowed Tactician and another of your target Personalities: Give the Personality +3F. After the next time this turn another player's action targets him, negate its effects.
Preserving Honor: Battle: Target an enemy Personality at the current battlefield: His controller chooses either to bow him, or to choose another location and move him there. If the bowing or movement is negated, remove the Personality from the game.
A: Removing the Personality from the game is also an effect of Preserving Honor, and therefore would also be negated by Consideration. Jon Palmer, "Consideration Vs Preserving Honor", 17 Jan 2012 - Q: The question: If the opponent chooses to move their personality away from the current battlefield, may I react with Cowed By Wisdom and thereby remove the personality (and attachments) from the game? Or are they able to re-choose.
A: The timing of Cowed by Wisdom is such that you must react with it before the choice is made at all. Its trigger is "Before an action's resolution", which would be after your (required) targeting of the Personality but before anything else (including the choice) occurs. Brook Cunningham, "Cowed by Wisdom + Preserving Honor", 9 May 2010 - Q: If I have a bowed personality that has been targeted by the card titled "The Last One", assuming I had 4 personalities that Last One destroyed.. what happens if my opponent targets him with preserving honor and choose to bow him?
A: The person playing Preserving Honor does not get to choose what happens to the target Personality.
In any case, because The Last One will negate either option presented by Preserving Honor, the Personality is getting removed.
Correction: Because the card is already bowed, trying to bow it will be a failed effect, not a negation effect. Consequently, the Personality is not removed (contra above)
And I'm just off to add some notes in the Wiki that if something will fail, it will take precedence over a negation effect (which will itself fail). Zen Faulkes, "Preserving Honor and Last One", 13 Aug 2009 - Q: May I choose to move my personality that was targetted with Preserving Honor to my opponent's home?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Preserving Honor", 2 Aug 2009 - Q: If I may not choose this - why?
A: Because a rule prevents it.
http://rules.l5r.com/Areas_of_the_game# ... in_play.29 Zen Faulkes, "Preserving Honor", 2 Aug 2009 - Q: Hello. There is nice Death at Koten action card : Preserving Honor
Situation : There is a battle, I am an attacker (side not important), my opportunity to play action, I have presence. I decide to use Preserving Honor ... and I target defender's unit _at_home (or : _at_another_battlefield_). Is that legal ? If yes, is opponent obliged to move unit to current battlefield?
Preserving Honor (Death at Koten action card) Battle: Target an enemy Personality. His controller chooses either to bow him, or to choose another location and move him there. If the bowing or movement is negated, remove the Personality from the game.
Rule of Location (comprehensive rules) EXCEPTION: A Battle Action can target or be taken by a card in a unit at another location if its costs or effects say they can move the unit to the current battlefield. Choices within the action must then be taken, if possible, such that they do move the unit there. Comment : One of action effects is movement, that movement could be made to current battlefield, "exception" doesnt' require action's player to be the one making (correct) choices.
Enemy (comprehensive rules) In a battle or attack, if you are the Defender or a defending ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Attacker or an attacking ally, armies on the attacking side, and units or cards in units controlled by an attacking player. Conversely, if you are the Attacker or an attacking ally, "enemy" describes a player who is the Defender or a defending ally, armies on the defending side, and units or cards in units controlled by an defending player. In a phrase such as "an enemy card," "enemy" does not refer to cards outside of units. [ADDED April 20 2008] Comment : contrary to some beliefs, 'enemy personality' is not 'personality in enemy army'.
A: Please note this ruling is for Samurai Edition only!
You may use Preserving Honor to target a personality at home, who is obliged by the exception to the Rule of Location to move to the current battlefield. IF that movement is negated (Winter Warfare, Blanketed Forest, etc) then the targeted personality is removed from the game.
Also note that if you are the Defender, and you use Preserving Honor on an Attacking unit that has already been in Battle Resolution as the Attacker this phase, then he is NOT removed from the game, as the movement merely fails, and is not negated.
We are currently debating implications and a proper ruling for Celestial Edition.
