Rules Q&A
- Q: When entering a duel, if I name 0 as fobidden Value,
Does Private Dojo works or can't it ?
A: Blade of Truths says, "The opposing player cannot play Focus cards or Reaction Action cards with that Focus
value during the duel."
Private Dojo is neither played as a Focus card, nor is it a Reaction Action card. It is a holding. Blade of
Truths does not affect it in any way. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 May 2004", 16 May 2004 - Q: If steel on steel is played on Kyofu, to issue a challenge to x personality. Then if the reaction from Private Dojo is played (raising the chi by the non-variable Fear strength -- 8 in the case of Kyofu), can I play 3 to get 24 chi (8 chi x 3 private dojos), making his chi 30?
A: Yes. That's exactly what each card does.
Just remember that after you take a Reaction, the opportunity passes left around the table to each player before it comes back to you to play your next Reaction as detailed on page 75 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: How long do chi force and Ph bonuses apply from duels from focusing? How about cards like Kakita dojo, Shosuro Tek, the new Crane Shugenja/Courtier, Private Dojo
A: From the FAQ at http://www.legendofthefiverings.com/ccg/faq.html :
Q: How long do effects last?
A: Being dishonored lasts forever. Tokens last forever. "Swearing fealty" lasts forever. Focusing in a duel lasts until the duel ends. Effects of Immediate Terrains last only while the Terrain is in play. Effects that last until a certain card straightens also end if it leaves play. All other effects, including those of Delayed Terrains, normally last until the end of the turn they happened in. This applies to all effects, not just stat bonuses.
Also, remember that effects on a card don't end early if the card leaves play. For example, a Personality who died because her Chi was reduced to 0 still has 0 Chi in the discard pile, and if she is returned to play before her Chi penalties wear off, she will immediately die again. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 March 2004", 29 Mar 2004 - Q: Just wanted to verify, If Kyofu issue a test of might, or other duel that compares force, and then reacts with a Private Dojo you could play Overconfidence on him then right?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 1 March 2004", 2 Mar 2004 - Q: If I have Wazinu no Yokai attached, is his fear considered to be on the personality for purposes of Private Dojo?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 December 2003", 13 Dec 2003 - Q: Still, I have to ask - why June 2nd?
A: We normally try to have errata go into effect on the first of every month. However, the 1st is a Sunday, with some Kotei scheduled for the Saturday before. We don't want anyone to have to change their decks in the (unlikely) event that a tournament gets delayed a day. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: Can Light of the Kamiís fear effect be used in conjunction with Private Dojo?
A: No. It must use a Fear-producing action on the Personality card. Jeff Alexander, "post for 19 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: << "If a Personality's Chi drops to 0, destroy the Personality." [GE p. 29] There is no "stack" in L5R. Each action resolves fully before the next one begins. [GE p. 47] The only exception is Reactions, and even those will only interrupt an effect if they are Reactions TO that effect. In other words, if some trigger occurs (such as Personalities entering a duel), and two different Reactions are played that both respond to that trigger rather than to each other (Face Me! & Private Dojo), then the Reactions are played and fully resolved one at a time.
Wow. That doesn't answer the question. :>
A: Yes it does. Private Dojo does not interrupt Face Me! in any way. Face Me! reduces the Shadowlands Personality's Chi to 0 before Private Dojo's Reaction can even start. This kills the Personality. There is no chance to use Private Dojo. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2003", 3 May 2003 - Q: A) Private Dojo goes off, then Face Me, so the guy dies. B) Face me goes off, then Private Dojo, giving him a Chi equal to his fear. C) Active player gets to decide (and therefore B)
A: B) is not possible according to what I wrote above. Also, C) is not one of the ways Reaction timing is determined in L5R. The correct way to determine first Reaction is on page 48:
1. Exact wording of the Reactions ("before" beats "after", etc.)
2. If identical wording, did one particular player cause the Reactions' trigger?
Yes -> first Reaction goes to that player's left No -> first Reaction goes to active player Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2003", 3 May 2003 - Q: Carrion's Breath Open: Bow Carrion's Breath and target a unit to raise the strength of all Fear effects on cards in that unit by 1 for the rest of the turn.
Private Dojo Reaction: After one of your Personalities enters a duel, raise a Personality's Chi (or other stat used in the duel) by one of his or her non-variable Fear strengths until the duel ends.
Q1: Can the effects of Carrion's Breath and Private Dojo be combined?
A: Yes. Private Dojo utilizes the card's current Fear strength, which includes all bonuses. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 January 2003", 23 Jan 2003 - Q: Q2: In the above example, if you have two each of Carrion's Breath and Private Dojo, could they all be used to raise Voitagi's Chi from 2 to 12 for that duel?
A: Yes...although note that Carrion's Breath is not a Reaction. If you haven't used it by the time the duel starts, it's too late. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 January 2003", 23 Jan 2003 - Q: I am looking for rulings on the new Uncommon Holding from FOU.
Private Dojo reads, "Reaction: After one of your personalities enters a duel, raise that personality's Chi (or other stat used in the duel) by one of his or her non-variable Fear strengths until the duel ends."
It does not say to bow it.
It is obvious that I can use it on different duels during the same turn, but if I have 2 in play, or 3, is it cumulative?
A: Yes. GE rulebook p. 32: "All adjustments that use a '+' or '-' sign or a word like 'extra,' 'further,' 'bonus,' or 'penalty' are cumulative." "Raise" is such a word. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 December 2002", 21 Dec 2002 - Q: I am currently playing it under the assumption that I can use each Private Dojo once per duel, and they are cumulative.
A: That's the right way to play it, and you don't even have to make assumptions! Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 December 2002", 21 Dec 2002
