Rules Q&A
- Q: So, I've recently been trying to parse the way keywords work when it comes to elemental keywords.
I've read that Moshi Kiyamori has a fire ability, but not the fire keyword, because non-action cards don't inherit the abilities keywords. hence, he can not use the fire ability on Kami's Embrace.
So how does Kami's Embrace work? Does it have 4 elemental keywords, or as a spell does it not inherit the keywords of it's abilities?
Do abilities on spells count towards elemental keywords for Purge the Unclean?
A: An addendum was made to the Rulebook (and is present within the Comprehensive Rules as well) that Spells as well as Actions inherit keywords from their abilities.
http://rules.l5r.com/Main_Page: "Under Special Circumstances: Keywords (p. 54), alter the paragraph to:
A reference to a "(Keyword) Spell," a "(Keyword) card," or a "(Keyword) Action card" can also refer to a Spell or Action card with an ability that has that keyword. A Spell also counts as having the keywords of all its abilities for the purpose of things that count keywords on cards. Spells or Action cards with a keyword on one ability do not necessarily have that keyword on all their other abilities." Brook Cunningham, "Confused about Keywords", 25 Mar 2008 - Q: RE: This.
Pardon me, but I believe the above answer is incorrect.
Aren't both the asker and answerer overlooking the fact that the Spell itself has the Fire keyword? Even a Shugenja with no keyword of his own alone in an army can cast it to some effect. Is there some reason/ruling that the Spell's action's keyword is not counted? That it IS counted seems to be implicit with the Spell's own wording "one or more".
A: Perhaps the original poster was assuming that some card effect removed the Fire keyword from the spell. Zen Faulkes, "RE: Purge the Unclean", 17 Jul 2007 - Q: Purge the Unclean: What is the procedure if the caster has no Element Keywords and is alone in an army?
A: Congratulations! You have successfully bowed a Shugenja.
No effects resolve. Zen Faulkes, "Purge the Unclean", 17 Jul 2007
