- Erratum: Reads, "Ratling Village Singular. Reaction: When paying for a Ratling Personality in this Province: Either reduce his Gold cost by 2, to a minimum of 1, or attach a Ratling Follower to him from your hand after he enters play, ignoring Gold cost. Limited: Pay 1 Gold: Target a Ratling Personality you control. Attach a 0F Ratling Pack Creature Follower token to him." [MRP, Khan's Defiance, 22 January 2007] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 138
- "To a minimum of 1" affects the Ratling Personality's total Gold cost for the same duration as the reduction by 2. Further Gold cost reductions, such as the 2 Gold discount for purchasing a Personality from one's own Faction, cannot be used to bring the card's cost to 0. [JA, web, 11 October 2005] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 138

Rules Q&A
- Q: If I use Ratling Village to bring out a Ratling Personality, and decide to attach Chitachikkan to him, does it get destroyed during that same turn's End Phase, or next one?
A: The same one. Don't bring him out via Ratling Village unless you happen to be coming, "From Nowhere." Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 May 2004", 9 May 2004 - Q: I had a player last night tell me that if I used Eye of the Needle to pay for a follower of Ratling Village that I couldn't gain the honor. Is this true?
It is true. You did not pay the Gold cost of a non-Shadowlands Creature card. You paid the Gold cost of an action on a Region. [DE p. 71]
Another kick in the teeth for the weakest faction. Oh well.
A: Faction standings don't determine rulings. (Besides, I'm not convinced Ratling is the weakest faction right now.) Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: I had a player last night tell me that if I used Eye of the Needle to pay for a follower of Ratling Village that I couldn't gain the honor. Is this true?
A: It is true. You did not pay the Gold cost of a non-Shadowlands Creature card. You paid the Gold cost of an action on a Region. [DE p. 71] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 March 2004", 6 Mar 2004 - Q: Are the followers created by Ratling Village tokens or cards?
A: They're both (Diamond rules, pg. 71). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 December 2003, Part 2", 12 Dec 2003 - Q: Using Warrens Stronghold and Ratling Village, are the tokens free since follower tokens are cards and all Ratling cards are 1 less gold?
A: No (Diamond rules, pg. 71). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 December 2003", 11 Dec 2003 - Q: If I put into play a Chitatchikkan with ratling village during my dynasty phase, it will die almost immediately, right ?
A: Yup. Almost. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: Can I bow and destroy the 0F Ratling follower created from Ratling Village to satisfy the cost of the [Warrens of the Nezumi stronghold]?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 11 November 2003", 12 Nov 2003 - Q: next does Ratling Followers will join you for 1 less Gold. mean that the followers from Ratling Village Reaction: When a Ratling Personality is entering play from this Province, you may reduce its cost by 2G, or attach a Ratling Follower from your hand without gold cost. Limited: Once per turn, you may pay 1G to add a 0F Ratling Pack Follower to one of your Ratling Personalities. come into play for 0 gold? or does it mean the same as your ratling followers cost 1 less gold and therefor not apply to the village.
A: The second. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 January 2003", 25 Jan 2003 - Q: Sorry, but the board would not let me reply to the original threat.
A: That's intentional. See here, fourth paragraph. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 28 May 2009 - Q: “Same title except for one letter AND same ability?”: Next to the name there is a clear difference between the cards: Ratling village also reads “singular” and the Ratling villagers did not.
A: In Diamond Edition, which introduced the "Singular" keyword, a rule was introduced that ALL Regions (from any edtion) were Singular (DE rulebook, pg. 59). Thus, the instant your above referenced "difference" was printed, it was also eliminated. But we've since rescinded that ruling in the Legacy Rules. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 28 May 2009 - Q: The name “Ratling villagers” is plural...
A: We are, none of us, immune to the odd typo. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 28 May 2009 - Q: Since it is a question board and not a discussion board: Are you sure the ruling about the typo is correct?
A: Yes. We're all quite sure. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 28 May 2009 - Q: Kuni (Who was technically correct ).
A: In the sense of, "getting off on a technicality", yes. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 28 May 2009 - Q: My opponent is playing the region Ratling Villages from the Hidden Emperor set, claiming that it's a diffrent card than Ratling Village (which is singular). We play legacy rules format.
The two regions have the same ability. Is Ratling Villages considered a different card from Ratling Village, or is this a typo?
A: Typo.
I mean, your friend is techncially correct until I update the Legacy wiki in the next few seconds, but come on, right? Same title except for one letter AND same ability?
So, in conclusion, thanks for the catch; it's hard to keep track of them all. A lot of cards dropped the "The" on their reprints, and I only caught some more in just this last month. A pesky "s" is now a new demon that I shall have to watch out for. Brook Cunningham, "Ratling Village(s)?", 26 May 2009 - Q: Are the followers created by ratling village considered tokens or cards. Most effects specify tokens or cards, like the matrons and ratling raider, but ratling village doesn't say.
A: Archive, Ratling Village. Zen Faulkes, "Ratling Village followers", 21 Mar 2005 - Q: [LE] if I have Ratling Village on a Provence with a 4 GC personality, can I apply the clan discount after the Ratling Village to reduce it to 0? Basically, does the minimum apply only to the Ratling Village reduction, or does it impose a permanent minimum of 1 GC on the rat card in the province?
A: I can't recall the exact contemporary reason why, but I'm fairly sure the minimum won't let the Village reduce the Rat past 1, regardless of other discounts. It's not a permanent thing, though; none of the reductions last after the point you pay. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 22 Dec 2025
