Rules Q&A
- Q: If I were to use Your Clan Needs You! to bring in a Crab Samurai, and then delay his destruction with Razor of the Dawn Castle, after the battle he would return to the Province.
A: I'm not quite sure if you are describing a scenario in which you are using Razor of the Dawn Castle in response to:
A) Your Clan Needs You! In that case, using Razor of the Dawn Castle would be illegal, because Your Clan Needs You! does not destroy anything: it discards.
B) Some other destruction effect occurring in the meantime. If that's the case... Zen Faulkes, "Your Clan Needs You! and delayed effects", 17 Nov 2011 - Q: Doesn't this mean that Beniha's delayed effect ends at the same timing point that the targeted personality's destruction is applied?
A: Sorry. Still discussing that. Brook Cunningham, "Asahina Beniha vs Razor of the Dawn Castle", 18 Apr 2009 - Q: Does this mean that Razor of the Dawn would delay the destruction effect to step D of the conflict list, but the end of turn rulebook effect would go at step C, thus wiping the delayed effect and making Razor essentially complete negation of a destruction effect?
A: And I'm also sorry I missed this bit. Answer: Definitely not.
Whether Razor delays the destruction until before, during, or after the end of the turn, the destruction will still happen.
It seems like you're suggesting that if the destruction gets delayed past the end of the turn, the turn ending will then "shut off" the destruction because of default effect limits or something. But delayed effects don't get "wiped". They are delayed until the time as they occur, even if that time is some time after the current turn. And Instantaneous effects (such as destruction) don't even HAVE a duration to which they COULD default. Brook Cunningham, "Asahina Beniha vs Razor of the Dawn Castle", 18 Apr 2009 - Q: Asahina Beniha
Crane Clan • Air • Shugenja • Courtier Political Open: Target another player's Personality. After the first time this turn he assigns to attack or is destroyed, gain 3 Honor.
Razor of the Dawn Castle
Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Samurai: Once per turn, you may delay the destruction until the current turn ends.
I make the Benihas ability to a crab clan samurai of my opponent and i destroy him with a "The Bitter Shadow of Shame", for example, and my opponent delayed the destroy with the Razor of the Dawn Castle. Can I win the honor? Thanks.
A: The honor is gained when the Samurai is destroyed: At the end of the current turn. Dan Jacobson, "Asahina Beniha vs Razor of the Dawn Castle", 23 Mar 2009 - Q: I was reading the comprehensive rules and finding myself a little confused.
i also searched the forums, and asked on the scorpion boards...and all answers lead me to the solution i was looking for.
yet i think i still need a little clarification, because i don't want to cheat.
Chi Death
This destruction from zero Chi is continuously applied. Special rules apply to its negation. Ongoing and instantaneous effects that negate destruction, such as the trait "Before this card is destroyed: Negate the destruction," will not negate destruction from zero Chi (see Effects). Only a continuous negation effect (for example, "This Personality cannot be destroyed" as a trait), or an effect that specifically refers to the zero Chi rule (for example, "Until the end of the turn, he is not destroyed for having 0 Chi") can overcome the Personality's destruction.
Crab Stuff
Razor of the Dawn Castle: Text Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Samurai: Once per turn, you may delay the destruction until the current turn ends
Courage in Death: Before one of your Personalities is destroyed during battle: Give another target Personality a Force bonus equal to your Personality's Chi. If you are a Crab Clan player, delay your Personality's destruction until after the battle ends.
Do Razor of the Dawn Castle and Courage in Death stop death from 0 chi?
I don't think they do, and everything i've read tells me they don't. Sorry if this has been asked a lot.
A: Please use the search function before posting: it didn't take me long to find this. Alex Jones, "Continuous Issue (Chi Death vs Crab)", 13 Mar 2009 - Q: Is Razor of the Dawn Castle a Castle?
i.e.: Castle Walls will produce 3 when paying with Razor of the Dawn Castle.
A: Additionally:
http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_C#Castle_Walls: "...Produce 2 Gold, or 3 Gold if another Castle Holding is producing Gold..."
Even if Razor of the Dawn Castle had the Castle keyword, Strongholds are not Holdings. Brook Cunningham, "Is Razor of the Dawn Castle a Castle?", 22 Nov 2008 - Q: Wouldn't the last effect trigger if the destruction was delayed, as he wasn't destroyed immediately? I.e. Wouldn't the Crab Clan Samurai be removed from game before any of the Duty stuff matters?
A: Why would it do that? The card doesn't say, "If he isn't destroyed ..."
The card does say, "If the destruction is Negated," which is specifically something Razor at Dawn Castle does not do. Martin Lund, "Razor of the Dawn Castle, Unexpected Intimidation, etc.", 9 Nov 2007 - Q: First off, let me appologize if this has been asked before (as I can only imagine that it has been) but I couldn't find it anywhere.
One of our Crab players wanted to know if you could prevent the death that was delayed through Razor of the Dawn Castle with Yasuki Jinn-Kuen. The specific example follows:
Player A: Hired Killer Hida Bob (Hero). Player B: Uses Razor of the Dawn Castle to Prevent the Death Player B: Yasuki Jinn-Kuen Political Open to negate the destruction of the next death caused by another players card effect. ... turn ends.
Razor of the Dawn Castle Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Samurai: Once per turn, you may delay the destruction until the current turn ends.
Yasuki Jinn-Kuen Political Open: Target one of your Hero Personalities. Before the next time this turn another player's card effect would destroy him, negate the destruction, move him home, and bow him.
Thanks for your time and your speedy response.
For the Lion!
A: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=62504 also applies here. The source of the destruction is not changing, simply being delayed until a later point. Chris Fuchs, "Razor of the Dawn Castle + Yasuki Jinn-Kuen", 15 Oct 2007 - Q: My opponent tries to destroy one of my Personalities, but I use Razor of the Dawn Castle to delay the destruction until the end of the turn. Am I right in thinking I can use my Hida Daizu Experienced to negate the destruction at the end of the turn?
A: Yes. The source of the destruction has not changed. It also doesn't specify anything like "after resolution." Zen Faulkes, "Hida Daizu Experienced vs. delay effects", 12 Oct 2007 - Q: Does this work the same for the negation of destruction effect from Razor of the Dawn Castle?
A: Yes. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Chi Reduction & Razor of the Dawn Castle", 12 Sep 2007 - Q: Can the Razor of the Dawn Castle's trait delay the destruction from the loss of a duel?
A: Comprehensive Rules, Effects: "When determining whether targeting, costs, effects or actions come 'from' or are done 'by' a card, look to the card where the thing in question is originally physically printed." Yes.
This is not new to Samurai Edition. It's always been that way. Zen Faulkes, "Razor of the Dawn Castle and Dueling", 7 Aug 2007 - Q: RE: This. Specifically, Zen's request for contradiction from the Comprehensive Rules.
To Zen:
I believe the section you are overlooking is this, from Card Features; Traits, "Restrictions in the general form “once (or twice, etc.) per turn (or phase, game, etc.)” have a different meaning in a triggered trait if they come before or after the colon. Such a restriction in the constraints block, before the colon, means that the trait is only triggered once, at the first opportunity in that span of time to be triggered. Such a restriction in the effects block, after the colon, means that the trait is triggered every time the triggering condition is met, but the effect can only be applied once. This matters if the effect is optional; in that case the “once per turn” restriction is only used up if the effect is actually used."
So, Razor of the Dawn Castle can delay actually only one Personality's destruction per turn. Correct?
A: Exactly. I was just looking up that section myself.
Basically, the Trait triggers every time - but the effect is optional because it uses "may."
The effect can only happen once per turn, but does not automatically use itself up at the first opportunity like a "Once per turn [Random Trait Trigger Condition]: [Generated Effect]," template Trait would.
The [TRIGGER]: Once per turn, you may [EFFECT] template give the player the ability to wait for the opportune moment to invoke the effect. Martin Lund, "RE: Razor of the Dawn Castle (pt.2)", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: In this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60124
I understand from the reply that the Trait triggers once per turn per personality. If this is correct, then the Crab player is permitted to freely save every single one of his personalities each turn, the first time any effect tries to destroy them.
I am hoping this is not correct.
A: Open to pointers on something I've missed in the Comprehensive Rules. Zen Faulkes, "Re: Razor of the Dawn Castle", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: Emphasys by me...
Razor of the Dawn Castle Before another player's card's effect destroys one of your Samurai: Once per turn, you may delay the destruction until the current turn ends.
Kyuden Ashinagabachi After each of your Ranged Attacks resolves: If it did not destroy its target, reduce the target's Force by the Ranged Attack's strength.
What happens if I produce a ranged 4 attack targeting a personality with 4 force controlled by the Crab player? The ranged attack would destroy the personality... So the stronghold delays if, and then Kyuden Ashinagabachi's trait would reduce his force?
Thanks,
Javier
A: Correct. Chris Fuchs, "Razor of the Dawn Castle vs Kyuden Ashinagabachi", 27 Jul 2007
