Rules Q&A
- Q: Hello,
I am attacking with Goju Bunoro, and the opponent defends with a personality and a Recruitment Officer token. Bunoro plays his ability targeting Recruit token, turning face up all provinces and choosing a personality there for the rest of his ability.
So, Recruit token goes to the province, the personality overlays the recruit token. The question is what happens at the end of the turn when the Recruitment officer token disappears.
a) The overlayed personality, is removed from the game AND the recruit token in the provinces disappear? b) The overlayed personality stays there and the recruit token in the provinces disappear? c) The overlayed personality, is removed from the game but the player can happily buy a 0g token? d) Nothing happens to the overlayed personality and the token can be bought?
Thanks for your time.

A: Per the rules on Overlay, the effects on the overlaid Personality carry over to the overlaying Personality. So the Personality entering play would be removed from the game at the end of the turn. The created card would cease to exist when it leaves play. Jon Palmer, "Goju Bunoro and Recruitment Officer", 28 Jul 2012 - Q: I have some questions about ambush. 1. Can they react with the Recruitment Officer holding to create a 2f2c ronin samurai? 2. Is it still considered my action phase for the purpose of playing rings that require actions in the same phase? 3. Does the mantis Kalani's Landing stronghold straighten when i play ambush?
Edited some acronyms to the complete card names, to aide future searching. -Ryushi
A: 1) Yes. Creating a Personality (and bringing him in to play) is not considered movement.
2) Yes. Nothing about Ambush ends or suspends the current phase.
3) No. Ambush does not create an Attack Phase, only a battlefield. Ben Higgins, "Ambush", 2 Mar 2012 - Q: Consider I overlay a Monk via Waystation of the Path
onto a Ronin generated by Recruitment Officer
Is removing the Ronin either a "ongoing effect" (I'd say "no", as it looks like a "delayed instantaneous effect") a "reference" (I'd also say "no" as I think this means explicit references in abilities like "he bowes to:") to the Card that is inhereted by him through:
All in one simple question: Is my Henshin removed at the end of the turn, if he overlayed a Recruitment Officer Token?
A: In this case you're right that it's a delayed instantaneous effect, however, that is part of the game state of the overlaid card, which will be inherited by the new card. So your Henshin will be removed from game at the end of the turn. Jon Palmer, "Overlaying: Waystation of the Path + Recruitment Officer", 19 Feb 2012 - Q: If I were to create a personality by way of Amazing Feat, Recruitment Officer, or Fruitless Search and they are dishonorable when their time limit runs out, do I lose honor?
A: Dishonourable created Personalities who are destroyed lose you honour.
Dishonourable Personalities who are removed from the game, or who are discarded or put in a province or deck, do not. Alex Jones, "Temporary personalities and dishonor", 13 Feb 2012 - Q: Hello,
When I engage in a battle and react with Recruitment Officer to make a Personality can I react with Lying in Ambush to make another personality?
Recruitment Officer Text Retainer Bow this card: Produce 3 Gold. Reaction: After engaging at a battlefield where you control one or more units, bow this card: Create a 2F/2C/2PH Ronin • Samurai Personality there. Remove him from the game when this turns ends.
Lying in Ambush Text Reaction: After the resolution of your Battle, Limited, or Open action that created a non-Shadowlands Personality: Create a 2F/2C/2PH Samurai Personality with your Clan alignment at the same location.
A: No.
Lying in Ambush is only triggered by the creation of a Personality from a Battle, Limited, or Open ability, not a Reaction, as Recruitment Officier's ability is. Brook Cunningham, "Recruitment Officer & Lying in Ambush", 12 Dec 2011 - Q: viewtopic.php?p=1213470#p1213470
Should the second paragraph not say "Likewise, a player other than the Defender may not assign his or her units to the defending side, and his or her units will not move into the defending side, or be brought into play on the defending side. This prohibition includes the Attacker and third-party players." ?
A: Indeed.
Expect updates - the section I've quoted probably belongs on the Battles page, since it should apply during all Battles, including those created by, say, Ambush, not just during an Attack Phase. Alex Jones, "Recruitment Officer", 7 Jun 2011 - Q: Recruitment Officer
Bow this card: Produce 3 Gold. Reaction: After engaging at a battlefield where you control one or more units, bow this card: Create a 2F/2C/2PH Ronin • Samurai Personality there. Remove him from the game when this turns ends.
QUESTION: Can I create the personality on the enemy's side of the battlefield? If yes, can I create a personality where my opponent controls no units?
Thanks!
A: Attack Phase, Declaration Segment: C. Invite Allies. During any one Attack Phase, a player other than the Attacker who was not invited by the Attacker may not assign his or her units to the attacking side, and his or her units will not move into the attacking side, or be brought into play on the attacking side. This prohibition includes the Defender and third-party players.
