- If more than one is destroyed in battle resolution, their effects occur simultaneously (i.e., you cannot use the destruction of one card to make a second card a legal target). [JA, 31 January 2003] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 91
Rules Q&A
- Q: 1. Players A's army which consists of an Ashura and a Voitagi opposes player Z 's army which consists of a bowed Ashura and a bowed Votagi. Now we got to resoulution. When player Z's Ashura is destroyed by resolution. Player Z targets player A's Ashura with his Ashura's effect. What happens now? Is players Z's Votagi a legal target for player A's Ashura or must player A destroy his own Votagi?
A: He's got to destroy his own Voitagi, since it is the only one still in play. Battle Resolution will destroy the losing Ashura and Voitagi at the same time, so neither will be valid choices for a retaliatory Ashura effect. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 June 2004", 6 Jun 2004 - Q: Player A is doing corrupt Crane with Pulse of the Black River active and an Ashura attacking Player B's province, or ambushing, or whatever.
Player B is also doing the corruption love with a Voitagi with Bloodstained Peasents attatched (5 force Unit).
Player A has Ashura "do what he must" and blows him up (with To Do What we Must). Ashura's trait kicks in and destroys Bloodstained Peasents (or some other legal target... I think), then TDWWM resolves to kill the remaining Voitagi...
The question is, how much Honor does Player A get from Pulse?
A: 4 Honor. He destroyed Ashura and Voitagi with an Action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 May 2004", 2 Jun 2004 - Q: If I destory Ashura to pay the cost of Overwhelmed, which effect occurs first?
A: You have to pay the costs and resolve anything triggering off such payments before you ever get to the effects of the Action you paid for.
You destroy Ashura to pay the cost of Overwhelmed. Resolve the triggered effect of Ashura's destruction before moving on to resolving the effects of Overwhelmed. Martin Lund, "Rules for 18 April 2004", 20 Apr 2004 - Q: Here goes:
I'm attacked by a player who has say 6 peeps one of which is Ashura. I block with Danjuro and leave Chieh at home. For my first action I go crazy with Chieh and Kuro's Fire for 20+ points. With one of my ranged attacks I kill Ashura who then targets and destroys Danjuro. I have some number (let's say 10) of points left to assign as ranged attack. Do I get to continue my action or is Chieh finished because I don't have presence?
A: Presence and Relevance are required to take the action, and Chieh only needs another unit there when she casts the Spell. Once that is done, its effects are set in motion. The rest of the Spell proceeds as normal. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 March 2004", 26 Mar 2004 - Q: Tsuruchi Nobumoto with a Tsuruchi tech, kills Ashura. Which Of the two effects comes first ?? The going back home, or the destruction by Ashura ?
A: Nobumoto's ranged attack destroys Ashura, then Ashura's effect happens, then the rest of Nobumoto's effects happen. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: A short while back the issue was discussed as to whether An attacking army with a dishonored personality would loose the game if an Aushura was in the defending army (and lost) and chose to destroy the dishonored personality during battle resolution, causing the attacker to drop to -20 honor, even though the attacker had enough force to win and destroy the army/province. I never saw a response from Jeff, so I would like to pose it as a rules question.
Even if this is not the last province, my question is this:
Does the trait on Ashura (defending) trigger before or after (or even simultaneouly as) honor is being gained (or being re-honored in this case) for winning the battle?
A: Ashura's trait triggers upon Ashura dying. [card text]
Yu destroys cards before the losing army dies. [rulebook]
Honor is gained after the losing army is destroyed. [rulebook] Jeff Alexander, "rules for 18-19 Feb. 2004", 20 Feb 2004 - Q: Does the trait on Ashura (defending) trigger before or after (or even simultaneouly as) honor is being gained (or being re-honored in this case) for winning the battle?
Ashura's trait pops before honor is gained. However, if Ashura kills your only dishonored personality, can you gain honor from the battle as normal now?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 18-19 Feb. 2004", 20 Feb 2004 - Q: Player A's Ashura dies. Player B plays Feign Death on the Ashura. Who suffers the entering play honor loss?
A: Player A. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 6 Feb. 2004", 7 Feb 2004 - Q: If i use Overhelmed in Ashura in a battle with 3 opponents
A: This one: Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 3 December 2003, Part 2", 4 Dec 2003 - Q: Destroy Ashura for Overwhelmed. Destroy 1 opponent for his ability. And opponent send 2 home or destroy 1
A: Aside: the effect at issue here is a trait, not an ability. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 3 December 2003, Part 2", 4 Dec 2003 - Q: If I Wedge my Ashura, and it dies from the Wedge effect, does Ashura's trait destroy an opposing follower/personality before it dies?
A: No. Units are detroyed at battle resolution, Wedge destroys after that. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 14 November 2003", 14 Nov 2003 - Q: If Nobumoto shoots Ashura [...] can Ashura's trait kill Nobumoto before he goes home?
A: Yes, because the "shoot" resolves before the "scoot" ("...then send this unit home," card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: If you've lost a battle, can Ashura's "Eye-for-an-Eye" trait make your opponent lose honor if you choose to destroy a dishonored personality when he/she/it dies during Battle Resolution?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 October 2003", 7 Oct 2003 - Q: If A Scorpion personality wins a battle aginst an Ashura or a personality with Yu when Kwanchai xp is out and unbowed, and the personality dies from that effect, can Kwanchai's ability be used?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 October 2003", 2 Oct 2003 - Q: [If] a Scorpion personality dies as a result of being targetted by an Ashura after losing to a duel, can Kwanchai's ability be activated then?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 1 October 2003", 2 Oct 2003 - Q: If your army is losing, and you plan to save them with trenches or something, can an Ashura you destroy with Yu still destroy one of your losing cards before the trenches save them?
A: See Rules Archive, General Rules, Yu: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 12 September 2003, Part 2", 13 Sep 2003 - Q: Ashura and to do what we must. A friend played a to do what we must of his ashura on my 7 fo unit. he said "i kill ashura, therefore your follower so I can tddwm the unit" I said it didn't work because my unit was never a legal target hence he could never play the card in the first place.
A: Currently, the unit would not have been a legal target. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 25 August 2003", 25 Aug 2003 - Q: Situation: I navalize Tsuruchi Nobumoto, then ambush an Ashura. Through the use of one card or another, I muster enough of a Naval Ranged Attack to kill the Ashura.
Question: Does Nobumoto escape home or is he destroyed?
A: Ashura's effect happens when it is destroyed, which is before Nobumoto moves. Jeff Alexander, "post for 3 June 2003", 4 Jun 2003 - Q: I use Overwhelmed on my Ashura and the Opposing player has 2 personalities in the battle. Which happens first? My Opponent sends home 2 of his units or does the Ashura blow up one his personalities with his trait which forces my opposing player to detroy his other personalty because of Overwhelmed?
A: The Ashura's trait destroys one of his Personalities before the effects of Overwhelmed apply. Jeff Alexander, "post for 16 May 2003", 21 May 2003 - Q: If you Overwhelmed Ashura, and they opt to send two units home, thus no defenders are in the battle anymore, can you still use its ability to kill a follower or peep with no followers in that battle? Which one would resolve first?
A: The death from Ashura dying happens before the effects of Overwhelmed on the opposing army. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 May 2003", 9 May 2003 - Q: Bonus question, unrelated to Guan - Part, the third: If an Ashura (Text: Destroy a Follower or a Personality without Followers in Ashura's battle if Ashura is destroyed while in an army) is defending a province, and is destroyed during the resolution of the battle, does he destroy the Follower/Personality before or after the province is destroyed?
A: Force totals are only calculated once to determine the outcome. The Province is destroyed regardless if the attacking army exceeded the defending army's Force by a sufficient amount when that calculation was done. Jeff Alexander, "post for 24 April 2003", 25 Apr 2003 - Q: If Ashura is bowed when the resolution segment of the battle begins, can he use his ability to destroy a personality without follower or a follower?
A: Not only can it, it must. As written, it's mandatory, and it is not an action, so it is not rendered inactive by being bowed. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 March 2003", 13 Mar 2003 - Q: 3) Suppose Ashura is used with TDWWM. What's the timing? In other words, suppose Ashura targets a personality with the Golden Obi. Does the timing work as: a) Cost: Ashura dies b) Trait of Ashura kills someone in opposing army c) Resolve effects of TDWWM targeting personality with Golden Obi d) Golden Obi activated OR a) Cost: Ashura dies b) Resolve TDWWM targeting personality with Golden Obi c) Golden Obi activated d) Activate trait of Ashura, thereby killing the person who had the Golden Obi.
A: The first one. Jeff Alexander, "post for 7 January 2003", 8 Jan 2003 - Q: Overwhelmed question.
Say I have Ashura in an army against 2 opposing units.
I play overwhelmed, and destory my highest force unit. (Ashura)
Will I get to use Ashura's ability before or after the other effects of Overwhelmed resolve.
A: As soon as the Ashura dies. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 October 2002", 23 Oct 2002 - Q: Another Ashura question:
Ashura's ability to destory an opposing card when destoryed in battle.
This can not be canceled by asako towers because it is a trait not an action?
A: Correct. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 October 2002", 23 Oct 2002
