Rules Q&A
- Q: If an attacking unit get moved (by Reinforce the Gates or whatever) to a battlefield that has already resolved will it still bow at the end of the attack phase?
A: Yes.
Battles, Final Steps: 2. Last battle cleanup: If battles have ended at all existing battlefields except this one, then any units at those battlefields return home simultaneously, and bow simultaneously or do not bow, under the same conditions as for a just-resolved battlefield. These are not effects of resolution, however. Alex Jones, "attacking units at resolved battlefields", 10 Jun 2011 - Q: Does Open Emotion allow the defending player to play the shown strategy before the attacker can react with Sneak Attack?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: Can Reinforce the Gates be used to negate the card strategy played by Open Emotion's ability?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: Can one play multiple copies of Open Emotion to then play multiple cards before the chance to Sneak Attack?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: If yes, do they have to be cards with different titles?
A: No.
A quick summary of the timing here:
1. Engage at Battlefield.
2. Resolve Delayed Effects triggered by engaging (Open Emotion's actions goes here).
3. The Attacker may use Reinforce the Gates (still before the Defender’s first normal action).
4. Resolve Reactions triggered by Engaging (Sneak Attack goes here).
5. First normal Battle action. Zen Faulkes, "Open Emotion, Sneak Attack, and Reinforce the Gates", 1 Feb 2011 - Q: After reacting with (Pillars of Virtue) and playing another action, is my opponent able to play another Reinforce the Gates to negate this action too?
A: Yes, since the additional action is still "a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass" (Reinforce the Gates' trigger). Zen Faulkes, "Pillars of Virtue and Sneak Attack vs. double Reinforce the", 6 Sep 2010 - Q: Very simple. If I'm attacking as crab and use sneak attack leading to hida's guidance's ability to destroy the Celestial and the army to destroy the province... what happens if my opponent uses Reinforce the Gates? I imagine that I would lose my army and the celestial because they are a part of the cost of the action, but the province of course would not be destroyed.
Is this the case? With reinforce the gates it says you use it after the action is announced. This is before costs are paid right? So if that is the case then do I also keep my guidance?
Hida's Guidance: Kami • Unique Crab Clan players' provinces have +2 strength. Battle: If you are an attacking Crab Clan player, the Defender has 2 or more provinces, and your current army's total Force is greater than the current battlefield's province's strength, destroy all your Personalities there and discard this card: Destroy the province and end this battle without resolution.
Reinforce the Gates: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Its effects do not happen.
A: You still have to pay the costs.
Note that, unlike with Dramatic Assassination being redirected, the section under Interference with mandatory costs doesn't apply, since there's no interference with any of the costs. Alex Jones, "Reinforce the Gates vs Sneak Attack + Hida's Guidance", 22 May 2010 - Q: So I keep getting a "page not found" when trying to use the search, so apologies if this HAS been posted before, I tried to use the search function first >.>
If my opponent plays Sneak Attack, and then follows it up with a battle action, which I Reinforce the Gates
Does it "successfully" resolve, for the purposes of, for example, Pillars of Virtue, or is it considered unsuccessful?
Thanks in advance!
A: The last cards in L5R to care about "successful" resolution were the CE printings of the Rings of Air, Water, and Void.
As of their MRPs in... forgive me, I forget if it was Path of the Destroyer or The Harbinger... "successful" was removed from their text and is no longer a term or distinction that we will be using.
So, for any CE-legal card including Pillars of Virtue, it doesn't matter if any of an action's effects actually occur; it still always "resolves" if legally taken, and will trigger effects that happen due to such. Brook Cunningham, "Reinforce the Gates + Successful Resolution", 8 Apr 2010 - Q: Hi rules team!
My question is if Reinforce the Gates can kill Yoritomo Eita after a Naval invasion?
Yoritomo Eita : After the resolution of the first Battle action taken in a battle, if another player took that action and there are now one or more units on each side at the current battlefield: Destroy Eita.
Reinforce the Gates : Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Its effects do not happen.
My argument is that since the Mantis player resolves his action, even if it fails, Eita's trait should trigger killing him if the Defender has a unit opposing his army at the current battlefield!
Another similar ruling is the following about Reinforce the Gates and Pillars of Virtue right here : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=78825&p=1034231&hilit=Reinforce+the+GAtes#p1034231
Thanks a lot in response!
A: That depends on whether Eita belongs to the attacker or the defender.
If Eita belongs to the attacker who declares a Naval Invasion, then Eita's trait won't trigger because it wasn't "another player" who took "the Battle action taken in [the] battle".
If Eita belongs to the defender and the attacker declares a Naval Invasion, then Eita's trait will trigger - Reinforce the Gates stops the action's effects happening, but there is still an "After the resolution" timing trigger. Alex Jones, "Reinforce the Gates + Yoritomo Eita", 8 Apr 2010 - Q: If I use Sneak Attack to issue a challenge with Kakita Kado, and my opponent plays Reinforce the Gates in response, what happens? I understand the duel does not occur, but was a challenge issued? Namely, does Kado gain Force from his trait even if the duel is negated?
A: Kado's trait would not trigger in the scenario you describe.
For an action that creates a duel, all of the duel (even the challenge part) is part of the "effects" of the action. Reinforce the Gates make the action's effects "not" happen, so no challenge would even be issued. Brook Cunningham, "Kakita Kado vs. Reinforce the Gates", 20 Mar 2010 - Q: Player A attacks and assigns all his personalities to a province. Player B assigns all his personalities to another province. If Player A resolves his province first, can Player B use the battle action on Reinforce the Gates to drag in one of Player A's personalities and then play the reaction on Stand Down to bow the personality?
A: No. The battlefield the Personality is moved to is not "the current battlefield," as required by the text of Stand Down that you quoted. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates and Stand Down", 25 Feb 2010 - Q: In regards to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81657#p1067418
Reinforce the Gates reaction says: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Its effects do not happen.
According to this: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Abilities_and_a ... _abilities
The announce stage is before payment of costs and even targeting. Thus, if a person has already targeted the card he intends to use Tatsuhiko ability to bow or straighten, it is too late to play the reaction on Reinforce the Gates.
Has something changed?
EDIT: Even if you still must perform required targeting, Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's ability has the text "You may pay Gold equal". Since paying the gold cost is optional, wouldn't you target, choose not pay gold, and then the effects "straighten the unit", would not happen?
A: I am presuming the correct timing.
After Yoritomo Tatsuhiko's action is announced, the defender plays Reinforce the Gates.
It is a perfectly legal choice to target a personality and pay no gold cost to have them straighten. This effect would not happen via the effect of Reinforce the Gates. Dan Jacobson, "clarification on Yoritomo Tatsuhiko", 7 Feb 2010 - Q: The first is the case of Reinforce the Gates being played when Yoritomo Tatsuhiko performs his action navally. I believe the gold would still be payed because it is in the cost block, but could someone please verify this for me?
A: If you're talking about the Reaction on Reinforce the Gates, yes. (Mod nudge: When an strategy card has multiple actions, please say which action. Thanks!) Zen Faulkes, "clarification on Yoritomo Tatsuhiko", 7 Feb 2010 - Q: When Player A uses Yoritomo Souhiko's ability as a naval action and the Player B plays a reinforce the gates, does Player B bow the holdings to "pay the costs" of the personality being brought into play at the battlefield(?)
A: No. Bringing the Personality into play is an effect of the action, which does not occur due to Reinforce the Gates. Same basic answer as equipping, though there are a couple of differences between equipping and bringing a Personality into play. Zen Faulkes, "Yoritomo Souhiko & Reinforce the Gates", 1 Jan 2010 - Q: What exactly does it mean for an action to have resolved? Specifically if a dragon player, playing Pillars of Virtue, plays Sneak Attack and then announces a battle kiho action, if the defender plays reinforce the gates; can the dragon player use the reaction on Pillars of Virtue?
A: Even if Reinforce the Gates makes it such that the effects of a Kiho "do not happen", the action is still considered to have resolved. Someone who casts a Kiho and has it's effects fail via Reinforce the Gates may use Pillar of Virtue's Reaction to take an additional Battle Action. Dan Jacobson, "Reinforce the Gates and Pillars of Virtue", 1 Sep 2009 - Q: Do the 2nd and 3rd copies of Reinforce the Gates count as successfully resolved actions?
A: No. Zen Faulkes, "Successfully Resolved Actions", 27 Jul 2009 - Q: So by the time that my opponent targets and he didn't play Determination, am I safe to assume that I can still react with it with Misdirection (since in playing Determination you can legally wait for your opponent for Reinforce the Gates)?
A: Determination and Reinforce have the same timing. In the round of Reactions to "after announcement", one could be played first, then the other, or the other way around.
If your opponent is beginning to indicate the target for the effects of his Ranged Attack, then yes, he has passed by the "after announcement" timing step in which you could play Reinforce or he could play Determination.
If there's some argument over him skipping your chance to React or you skipping his, that's an issue for a judge (as per your link above). Brook Cunningham, "Determination Errata Vs Misdirection", 4 Apr 2009 - Q: I have a question pertaining to this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60023&p=770354
Basically, I often have trouble explaining how this works to my opponents and I am wondering how to do this more clearly. Is saying "Equip is the action I take, and the effects of that action are that I pay the costs of my attachment and attach it to my personality, so when I announce 'Equip' is when you would have to play reinforce the gates" accurate?
Relevant texts:
Equip Limited: Any number of times per turn, target one of your Personalities: Attach a target attachment card from your hand to him (paying all costs).
Eastern Hub Port Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
Reinforce the gates Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects.
A: That is correct. Dan Jacobson, "Eastern Hub Port and Reinforce the Gates", 24 Mar 2009 - Q: 2. My opponent plays Sneak Attack and announces the first action. I react by playing Reinforce the Gates. Can I play Isuke's reaction to his action eventhough I negated the action's effects (is the action still considered "resolved") ?
A: Yes.
http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_actions#D._Action_resolves: "An action resolves even if all its effects are negated or otherwise do not occur." Brook Cunningham, "Shinjo Isuke", 6 Mar 2009 - Q: If I am defending, and my opponent attempts to take the first action by whatever means (Naval, Sneak, Hachigoro...) then I negate his action's effects with Reinforce the Gates. Then I play Dance of the Winds. Would it count as the first battle action taken?
A: No.
The fact you negated your opponent's action's effects doesn't change the fact that it was still taken.
http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_actions#D._Action_resolves: "An action resolves even if all its effects are negated or otherwise do not occur." Brook Cunningham, "Dance of the Winds", 13 Nov 2008 - Q: Fair enough. Tangentially, does the attachment that the opponent was trying to Equip get revealed, or are you negating the action before he ever has to reveal the attaching item?
From Marty's answer, it seems as though it's never revealed, but I wished to be sure.
A: That's correct.
Now, tournament Floor Rules are beyond my scope, but I'm going to pre-emptively editorialize here:
If you are at a sanctioned event, and you feel your opponent may have illegally announced the Equip action with the sole intent of tricking you into wasting your Reinforce the Gates on it, you may call a judge to verify that he announced it legally. Brook Cunningham, "Clarification on my question re: Reinforce The Gates", 17 Sep 2008 - Q: My opponent is playing out of EHP.
A: Enemy Helicopter Pad? Elephant House Parkade? Early Horse Power? I literally do not know what you are referring to.
Mod reminder: Please do not use abbreviations, acronyms, or nicknames when asking questions. It is confusing to new and experienced players alike.
Thanks! Zen Faulkes, "Clarification on my question re: Reinforce The Gates", 16 Sep 2008 - Q: Does the "assigns or moves to attack" on Unspoken Threats include movement between the defenders provinces, or only from home to the province.
Example: I bow a Courtier and target my opponent's personality. My courtier remains in play throughout. On my opponent's turn, he declares an attack, and assigns his personality to attack Province 'A'. Loses 2 honor. I assign a personality to defend at Province 'B'.
My opponent decides to resolve battle at Province 'A' first. For my first action, I play Reinforce the Gates, and move his personality to oppose mine at Province 'B'. Does this movement cause him to lose another 2 honor?
Unspoken Threats Political Limited: Bow one of your target Courtiers: Target another player’s Human Personality. While your Courtier remains in play, after each time that Personality assigns or moves to attack one of your Provinces, his controller loses 2 Honor
Reinforce the Gates Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Target an unopposed unit there. Move the unit to a target battlefield where it would be opposed
A: The personality is moving to attack a new province; his controller loses another two honour. Alex Jones, "Unspoken Threats & movement between battles", 22 Apr 2008 - Q: If I as an attacker start before the defender (f.e naval, sneak attack...) and the defender player plays Reinforce the Gates. Must I pay the attachment pay or not?
A: You do not have the pay for the attachment. The action that is negated is the action to play the attachment and the cost is part of the attachment and not the cost of the attaching action. Doruk Özaydın, "Reinforce The Gates + Attaching", 16 Mar 2008 - Q: I was told that the rule has changed and I must puy it. And if I have to pay, do I discard the follower or does it return to my hand? And if the attachments makes an Honor loss do I get it?
A: The follower never leaves your hand as the action to attach it was negated. The follower is not discarded nor do any of its entering play effects occur. Doruk Özaydın, "Reinforce The Gates + Attaching", 16 Mar 2008 - Q: can Reinforce the Gates be used as an attacker(?)
A: The Reaction? Yes, although there won't be many times it will be triggered. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates and use as an attacker", 2 Feb 2008 - Q: I have Hida Kuon Exp 5 at one province, and my oponent assigns the Fire Dragon to a different province. He then proceeds to resolve Hida Kuon's battle first. Then he resolves the Fire Dragon's battle. Can I play Reinforce the Gates to move him to Hida Kuon's already resolved battle?
A: I'm assuming the player with the Fire Dragon is the attacker in this scenario. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates and resolved battles", 1 Feb 2008 - Q: Would the Fire Dragon be bowed?
A: When it went home after all battles resolve, yes. http://rules.l5r.com/Battles#After_Resolution Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates and resolved battles", 1 Feb 2008 - Q: Strangely enough, this is a question about the wording on the Rings of Water and Void.
Ring of the Void says: After you successfully resolve your fourth or later non-Kiho action from Action cards in one phase: You may put his card into play from your hand.
Ring of Water has similar wording, also requiring successful resolution.
The Comprehensive Rules quite clearly define a successful action as one that changed game state somehow, so if an action somehow has all its effects negated, it is not considered successful, right?
Now here's the question: do the conditions on Ring of the Void and Ring of Water require that all four actions be "successfully resolved", or only that the fourth action be successfully resolved? In other words, if an attacker has his first Battle action's effects negated by Reinforce the Gates, then successfully plays 3 more Battle actions, all from action cards with different titles and all non-Kihos, can he play the Rings or not?
A: You need four successfully resolved Actions. Martin Lund, "Ring of Water/Void, Successfully", 27 Nov 2007 - Q: Following situation: Player A plays Sneak attack (or declares a Naval invasion). He reacts with Determination to his first action taken this battle. Can player B play Reinforce the Gates to negate the actions effects?
A: You could play Reinforce the Gates, but it would not Negate any of the effects of the Action benefiting from Determination, since Determination says, "The action can not have its effects negated or have its targeting changed." Martin Lund, "Determination vs Reinforce the Gates", 19 Nov 2007 - Q: In regards to: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61750&p=790211#p790211
I understand the ruling on that specific thread, but in this scenario:
Eastern Hub Port Equipping is a Battle/Open action for you. After the first Battle action resolves each turn that attached a card to one of your Personalities: You may take an additional Battle action.
If say my opponent is Mantis with EHP is attacking me I have defenders He declares Naval and uses EHP Battle action of equipping Two questions: a) Am I able to use reinforce the gates to negate the equipping? b) Am I able to let the equipping resolve then negate his additional battle action?
Currently after reading Reinforce the Gates: Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects. Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Target an unopposed unit there. Move the unit to a target battlefield where it would be opposed.
Since the reaction states before the defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass... and his additional battle action would still fall under that category of going before my action as a Defender... am I able to wait after he equips and then use an additional battle action and cancel that battle action after the equipping?
Thank you.
A: Yes.
The linked thread is saying that you can't use Reinforce to negate the actual Naval Reaction or Sneak Attack Reaction abilities, as Reinforce can only negate Battle actions. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates vs. Naval Action + Equip + Action", 25 Sep 2007 - Q: So if an attacker attacks and uses the Naval (or Sneak Attack) effect, can the defender wait until after the subsequent action is announced before he plays the Reinforce the Gates to negate the effect?
A: Not only can the defender wait, the defender must wait. Neither the Naval ability nor Sneak Attack is a legal trigger for Reinforce the Gates because they are not Battle actions. Zen Faulkes, "Naval/Sneak Attack - Reinforce the Gates - Timing II", 16 Sep 2007 - Q: If I Equip as a Battle Action using Eastern Hub Port and my opponent legally plays Reinforce the Gates, must I have already payed the gold for the attachment?
A: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60023 Zen Faulkes, "Eastern Hub Port Equiping vs Reinforce the Gates", 15 Sep 2007 - Q: I am attacking a province with Mirumoto Kei experienced, my opponent defends with a unique personality. I play Sneak Attack, and use Kei's battle action. May the opposing player use Reinforce the Gate to negate the effects of the action? My opponent says that Reinforce reacts to the announce of the action, and not to the targetting and effects. Is he correct?
A: "Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action..." (emphasis added).
Yes, your opponent can do that. Zen Faulkes, "Mirumoto Kei experienced + Reinforce the Gates + Sneak Attac", 20 Aug 2007 - Q: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60432
So, if I'm reading that correctly... the "good faith rule" should prevent abuse of actions vs. negation at announcement, however, the "good faith rule" apparently does not apply to attaching cards in the effect that you do not need to site any attachment, only an action that attaches something, and the target, (and any other additional costs caused by effect or as part of the specific action)?
If an action card, being face-down in your hand, is announced, and the action is negated, do costs still need to be paid?
A: Every Samurai card I could find only negates effects of an action, not an entire action. If only the effects are negated (ie Reinforce the Gates), costs still need to be paid. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Announcement, pt. duex!", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Is paying for an attachment a cost of an action, or an effect? Or a cost of an effect?
A: Its the cost of the attachment. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Announcement, pt. duex!", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: For the "Good Faith" rule. If the sited action is on a card that is face down, is the card revealed or shown at all?
A: Face up.
http://rules.l5r.com/Card_types#Using_Action_cards A. The player puts the Action card face-up in a resolution area, which is created for that card.
B. The player announces which ability on the card is to be used. The action then proceeds (see Actions and abilities.)
http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _abilities At this step, the player says which ability he or she is using, indicating its source and, if that source has multiple abilities appropriate for that point in time, which ability is being used.
Good Faith Rule: When an action is announced, the player must be able to target all required targets, meet all conditions of the action, and pay all mandatory costs, to the best of his or her knowledge. (rest of section) Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Announcement, pt. duex!", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Is a Variable Gold Cost, such as with Hired Killer or Ruthless Advance, needed to be announced as part of the "Good Faith Rule"?
A: That is determined based on targeting and has nothing to do with ability announcement. The Good Faith rule still applies to the resulting cost. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Announcement, pt. duex!", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Would an action card with a variable gold cost of either of the two above mentioned types, that is negated by Reinforce the Gates, need to have it's costs paid?
A: Hired Killer/Ruthless Advance would need to be paid based on targeting, as Reinforce only negates effects of the action. Dark Fate would need to have at least 2 gold paid per its costs, but you do not need to choose to pay more. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Announcement, pt. duex!", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: If I announce a naval attack to use the action on Eastern Hub Port, but my opponent uses Reinforce the Gates to cancel the action am I right in assuming it does not go against my additional free action when/if I attach that follower later in the battle?
-Matt
A: If a card is not successfully attached, the trait on the stronghold will not trigger. Chris Fuchs, "Eastern Hub port question", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=60023&p=770354&hilit=Reinforce+the+Gates#p770354
Would the above not also apply to, for example, a Peasant Vengeance off a Naval Follower, or Ruthless Advance if/when negated by Reinforce the Gates?
A: Be more specific. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: When precisely is a card revealed, and when precisely are costs paid?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _abilities Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Can an action be announced without any legal method of playing the action if the card is face-down?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _abilities Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: Are specific actions announced, or is it merely that one announces an action is going to take place, and then proceeds to reveal an pay costs according to the action step by step?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _abilities Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: If you announce an action, can you change your mind about what action will be done after announcing that you will perform an action?
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _abilities Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: How does the above ruling interact with the rulebook action of discarding the Imperial Favor to send home an attacking personality?
A: Be more specific. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates Negation of Actions", 13 Aug 2007 - Q: So from reading posts, I see it is perfectly legal to move attacking units to an already resolved battlefield with Reinforce the Gates, however, I do not see an answer to what happens at that battle. So, even though the battlefield has resolved, if attacking units that have not been through a battle resolution are moved there, would a normal battle happen and resolve again, or would nothing happen? Thank you.
-D.
A: Rules, Battle: "If no battlefields that haven’t resolved a battle remain, then all units still at battlefields return home, are bowed by resolution if they were attacking or allied, and all battlefields cease to exist." Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates one more time", 11 Aug 2007 - Q: I am the defender and I'm defendig at Battlefield A with one personality, and my opponent is attacking with one personality Battlefield B...
We resolve the battle with my personality and we both pass...
We resolve the battle with his personality... Can I play Reinforce the Gates to move him to Battlefield A (wich has already resolved) or is that an ilegal play?
A: I see nothing that makes this an illegal play.
Reinforce the Gates says: Martin Lund, "Reinforce the Gates under SE", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Target an unopposed unit there. Move the unit to a target battlefield where it would be opposed.
A: "Even if you control no units at the current battlefield," will get you around the Rule of Presence.
Targeting a unit at the current battlefield will satisfy the Rule of Location.
Moving the unit to Battlefield A where you have a Defending Unit to oppose him will satisfy the text of the card itself.
The play is perfectly legal. Martin Lund, "Reinforce the Gates under SE", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: If it's legal... What happens after the phase ends? Will his personality move home bowed?
A: The Comprehensive Rules say: Martin Lund, "Reinforce the Gates under SE", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: If no battlefields that haven’t resolved a battle remain, then all units still at battlefields return home, are bowed by resolution if they were attacking or allied, and all battlefields cease to exist.
A: That looks like a "yes," to me.
See here for further reference. Martin Lund, "Reinforce the Gates under SE", 30 Jul 2007 - Q: I resolve a battle a province and play sneak attack and procede to play a battle action. My opponent plays reinforce the gate to cancel that action. Can I then react with Purge the weak to take another battle action even though my first one was canceled?
A: Yes. Comprehansive Rules, Abilities and actions: "An action resolves even if all its effects are negated or otherwise do not occur as effects." The trigger is valid. Zen Faulkes, "purge the weak and Reinforce the Gates", 25 Jun 2007 - Q: in regards to: this
So technically the order would be:
Player A (with stronghold Broken Wave City) announces Naval, then announces "I will attach a card from my hand as my battle action"
Player B has the opportunity to play reinforce the gates before Player A has to show the proposed card to be attached from his hand?
A: There is no requirement for showing the card a Broken Wave City player wishes to attach when the action is announced. Zen Faulkes, "Reinforce the Gates + Attachments technicality question", 27 May 2007 - Q: Can my oponent use Reinforce The Gates on the battle I gained after using Resumed Hostilities on a naval invasion/sneak attack?
Ex: I declare naval invasion and anounce Resumed Hostilities, my oponent doesn't react with Reinforce The Gates so I remove a ability from a oposing peep, draw a card and then make another battle from Resumed, can he use Reinforce on that?
I assume it's possible since he didn't have the chance to act.
Thanks in advance.
Resumed Hostilities:
Battle: Target a Personality opposing a Personality you control. Remove one of his abilities, if possible. Draw a card. If you removed an ability, you may take an additional Open or Battle action to play a legal card from your hand.
Reinforce The Gates:
Reaction: After a player announces a Battle or Open action during a battle before the Defender’s first normal opportunity to act or pass: Negate the action’s effects.
A: Yes, because he still has not had a normal opportunity to take an action or pass. Chris Fuchs, "Reinforce The Gates + Resumed Hostilities", 21 May 2007
