Rules Q&A
- Q: Can Doji Sakurako cancel the effects of:
1. Attacker's Terrains placed by Untested Scouts
2. Attacker's Terrains placed by Removing the Advantage
Would her ability apply in the same situation if she is in the Attacking army and the Defender used those cards?
Doji Sakurako - Political Reaction: After a player announces a Battle action before the Defender's first normal opportunity to act or pass, if Sakurako is at the current battlefield, discard the Imperial Favor: Negate the action's effects.
Untested Scouts - Recon Limited: Target a Province. Until the turn ends, after engaging in a battle at the province's battlefield, you may take one additional Battle action to play a Terrain from your hand.
Removing the Advantage - Reaction: After engaging in a battle, if you control a unit at the current battlefield: Play a Terrain card as an additional Battle action.
A: Untested Scouts and Removing the Advantage both grant additional Battle actions with timing points sometime between "Armies Engage" and the "Defender's first normal opportunity". Doji Sakurako's Reaction can thus be performed in response to them; she doesn't care whether the action is performed by the attacker or the defender.
The Defender will usually have trouble playing a terrain from Untested Scouts, however, since its ability is Limited. Alex Jones, "Doji Sakurako and "After Engaging" additional battle actions", 17 Jun 2008 - Q: Regarding this thread: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=68810 and just for clarification:
The OT asked whether he could "[...] get to take a normal battle action and then be able to play a terrain from Removing the Advantage trigger [...]" (emphasis mine)
From http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_A#Additional: "When an action or triggered trait grants an additional action, the timing of the additional action is delayed, such that the action is taken once the action or trait that granted it has ended, and the opportunity to play Reactions to the end of the action or trait has passed." (emphasis mine).
Wouldn't that mean that playing the terrain must happen when the reaction ends, and therefore before his first opportunity to act or pass? As the ruling stands, he gets to play his normal battle action before the additional battle action granted by Removing the Advantage.
A: Clarification: I was focused on whether you got two actions, and didn't notice the proposed sequence.
The Terrain must always come first.
You still get two actions in a row, though. Zen Faulkes, "Removing the Advantage", 13 Jun 2008 - Q: If I play Removing the Advantage for it's second action as a defender and I control one or more units at the current battlefiled, do I get to take a normal battle action and then be able to play a terrain from Removing the Advantage trigger resulting in having played two actions back-to-back?
A: Nothing prevents it. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Removing the Advantage", 12 Jun 2008
