Rulings
- Erratum: Should read, "Ring of Air 0G 4FV You may play this card as a Reaction after resolving your third Spell or Kiho in one turn from cards with different titles. Elemental Open: Bow this card or discard it from your hand: Target a Personality. Straighten him." [MRP, Rise of the Shogun, September 2006] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 61
- You are bound only by the caster's original targetting requirements. [RD & DW, email, 6/27/97] [REVERSAL] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 50
- For example, you can redirect a spell to one of your bowed Personalities, or a spell which targets out-of-play cards to a different out-of-play card. "A monk using a kiho is considered one of the 3 spell effects necessary for putting the Ring of Air into play." [DW, l5rinfo, 5/6/97] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 50
- That last ruling only holds for Kiho. Monk abilities are not "innate". [DW, l5rinfo, 5/15/97] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 50
- Once played, three new innate abilities/spell effects must be produced to play it again. [ZF, 11/99] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 50
- Clarified: you need not use shugenja to produce the spell effects. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 10
- Q: Do kiho played by Monks count towards the Ring of Air? The rulebook says kiho are spell effects, but the Ring says you must produce three spell effects by using Shugenja. A: Kiho count even when Monks use them. The Ring of Air was reworded in the Obsidian Edition to avoid this conflict. But Monks' built-in abilities don't count towards playing the Ring since only shugenja abilities are "innate". Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 5
- Q: I want to do something to one card, but I'm not allowed to target it. Can I aim my effect at another card, then use something like the Ring of Air to redirect it to the card I really want it to hit? A: No. You can only redirect actions to things they could have been aimed at in the first place. This also means you can't redirect Ranged Attacks back to a card in the firer's army, unless your redirection card says you can. Redirection effects are only useful in deflecting your opponents' actions or neutralizing their own redirections. They can't give your own actions a wider range of targets. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 22
- Q: What if the spell always affects one thing, like, say, the player casting it? Can I use the Ring of Air to make it affect someone else? A: Go back and read p. 22. If you never have a choice as to what gets affected, then the spell doesn't have a target. If it doesn't have a target, you can't change its target. Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.6.2, May 1998, p. 22
- Q: Do Kihos played by Monks count towards the Ring of Air? The rulebook says Kihos are spell effects, but the Ring says you must produce three spell effects by using Shugenja. A: Kihos count even when Monks use them. The Ring of Air will be reworded in future printings to avoid this conflict. Monks' built-in abilities don't count, since they're not "innate". Legend of the Five Rings FAQ, Version 3.4 & errata, June 1997, p. 10
- Focus on... The Wind's Truth: The Wind's Truth is Political, by glossary definition. "Another player" means someone other than the one who is going to gain/lose the Honor, not someone other than the caster. The Honor gain from winning or tying in a battle is one single gain. Deadly Ground, and possibly Night Battle, render it illegal, since they last for the entire battle and Honor is gained during the Resolution Segment. The source of the gain/loss remains unchanged. The Ring of Air can redirect it, but only to another "another player," so you can't send the gain/loss right back to the player from which it was just taken. In a two-player game, the Ring of Air cannot be used on it. The Imperial Herald, Issue 12, p. 34
- Q: I want to do something to a particular card, but I'm not allowed to target it. Can I aim my effect at some other card, then use something like the Ring of Air to redirect it to the card I really want it to hit? A: No. You can only redirect actions to things they could have been aimed at in the first place. The Imperial Herald, Vol. 2, No. 1 (Issue 5), p. 15
- Erratum: Reads, "Ring of Air 4FV Air • Unique After you resolve your third or later Spell or Kiho action in one turn from cards with different titles: You may put this card into play from your hand. Battle/Open: Bow this card or discard it from your hand: Straighten a target Personality." [MRP, The Harbinger, 19 January 2010] Comprehensive Rules, Celestial Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, February 2012, p. 150
- Erratum: Reads, "Ring of Air 4FV Air After you successfully resolve your third or later Spell or Kiho action in one turn from cards with different titles: You may put this card in play from your hand. Battle/Open: Bow this card or discard it from your hand: Straighten a target Personality." [MRP, Samurai Edition, 25 July 2007] Comprehensive Rules, Samurai Edition, with specific card rulings, final version, May 2009, p. 152
Rules Q&A
- Q: If I play Ring of Air from my hand after my 3rd effect, put it back in my hand via an effect, and play a 4rth spell effect/kiho, can I put it back into play?
A: Ring of Air says, "Play Ring of Air after casting three or more Spells and/or Kiho in one turn."
4 counts as "three or more," does it not? Responding to the 4th or 5th Spell and/or Kiho cast in the turn is perfectly fine. Martin Lund, "Rules for 19 January 2005", 24 Jan 2005 - Q: So:
- can you or can you not use the Ring of Air to straighten the personality that casts the 3rd Kiho at which point you play it? The accumulated rulings say "no", is this true and why?
A: [MARTY] You can't do it. The timing is distinctive.
You have to play the Reaction in response to the Personality bowing, immediately when he bows, or not at all. The Ring isn't in play yet, so you can't use it at the appropriate time - hence, not at all.
The Ring is put into play after all costs are paid and Reactions to such payments have been played out as well. It is played before the Effects of the Spell or Kiho Action resolve, because that is when the Action is considered a successful play - "taken / cast." Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 January 2004", 14 Jan 2005 - Q: However one of my playgroup claims he has been told that a ring must be in your hand during the entire time you play all the spells or kihos (or battle actions or duels I'd gather) required to put it into play.
A: There is no such requirement. It is still the third or later spell or kiho cast in a turn, no matter where the Ring resides.
You just need to have the ring available to play (typically in your hand) once the Spell or Kiho is considered "successfully cast" (IE - after all costs are paid and it isn't canceled), or you'll miss your timing window to play it (since it is played like a Reaction would be played). Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 November 2004", 19 Nov 2004 - Q: --- In, Jeff Alexander Can you play (as an example) three spell effects. When the timing window for playing the Ring of Air appears, you announce that you are playing the Ring of Air, Introspection off that "played" to grab the Ring of Air from your deck, then resume where you left off and play the Ring of Air that you just fetched?
You cannot merely say you are playing a card and respond to that with Reactions to actually playing one. This has nothing to do with timing.
In that case, at what points does an action have to be legal and what happens if the action becomes not legal? If I announce an action that is not legal and it becomes legal as I play the action, then I thought that I got to play the action. Is this not the case?
A: That is not the case. You cannot announce an illegal action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 31 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: Ok because of the current wording here is a silly way to play the ring of air that appears legal but after you have played it you will have only cast 2 spells or kihos.
Step 1 cast any spell or kiho
Step 2 cast Ryoshun's Last Words targeting the unravelling you have in play
Step 3 after choosing targets and paying the cost you have successfully cast the spell but its effects have not happened yet so you bow unravelling to cancel the kiho.
Step 4 After successfully casting unravelling but before its effect occur play Ring of Air
Step 5 Ryoshun's Last Words is canceled leaving you with only two successfully cast spells or kihos and the Ring of Air
A: That works just fine. You had 3 cast for enough time to drop Ring of Air. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 July 2004", 4 Jul 2004 - Q: - My opponent has Agasha Chieh with Kuro's Fire in play, as well as a Ring of Air ; he casts KF, i react with Flee ; can he straighten Chieh with the Ring of Air ?
A: Chieh is still bowing to pay the cost of casting the Spell, so he can straighten Chieh with the Ring. All the Ring cares about is why she bowed, not that she was successful. Martin Lund, "Rules for 28 June 2004", 30 Jun 2004 - Q: I have already cast 2 spells or kihos this turn. My 4th battle action in a battle is a spell or kiho. I play the Ring of Water, can I now introspect for the Ring of Air and play it.
A: Sure, you drop the Ring of Water in response to playing the Action.
You play Introspection in response to the Ring of Water.
If no one has any other responses to Ring of Water, then go back to playing responses to your Kiho.
Play Ring of Air. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: If I play three kiho or spells in one turn, I can drop the ring of air. If my third kiho/spell action is an action that bows the caster, may I unbow the caster with the Ring of Air after the Ring of Air has been played?
A: No. You can't play the Ring of Air until all costs have been paid and the window of opportunity to play Reactions to the payment of such costs has closed by all players passing in a row. Then you play the Ring and it is too late to use it to straighten your casting Monk or Shugenja. Martin Lund, "Rules for 25 June 2004", 28 Jun 2004 - Q: Thus the reason you can't play Ring of Air after your fifth casting of a spell or kiho (or something like that).
A: [MARTY] Actually, Ring of Air says, "After casting three or more," so it has to get dropped immediately after casting spells 3,4,5,6, etc. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 June 2004", 25 Jun 2004 - Q: Keeper of Air:
1. Do you have to discard any Rings to get the Ring of Air? This ability is down as a trait, and it seems unspecific to me as to whether or not the removal of the rings to their owners hands is a cost of the effect.
A: It is definitely a cost. I do not believe you need to have any Rings in play to fulfill that cost, however. Martin Lund, "Rules for 8 June 2004", 10 Jun 2004 - Q: Can a personality who is bowed be targetted by actions that bow him? For instance, can I Palm Strike a bowed, weaponless opponent in order to play Ring of Air?
A: There is no problem with that. Bowing a bowed Personality won't have any effect, however, when you try to do it. Still, it does count as a successful action / casting / etc. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: Ring of Air's text changed as of Diamond. The Ring of Air now refers to only Spells and Kiho rather than Spell Effects and Kiho. It now looks to me like I can no longer use innate abilities to get the Ring of Air into play. Is that correct?
A: You've got it. Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 April 2004", 29 Apr 2004 - Q: If you satisfy the condition yet fail to play a Ring immediately as you do so, you can not play it later in the turn unless its trigger reoccurs (for example, you can't Walk the Way for Ring of Air and play it if Walking the Way is your 3rd spell on the turn, but if you later cast another spell/kiho, you can play the Ring then).
A: You still have to play it as soon as it becomes legal, not later. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 9-10 March 2004", 11 Mar 2004 - Q: A play my 3 kiho/spell on the same turn, for example I bow my shugenja to cast walking the way.
A) If I had the Ring of air in my hand can I play it and use his reaction to unbow the shugenja I used to cast my 3 spell/kiho (the one I used to cast walking the way)?
A: You may not play the Ring of Air and immediately use it to straighten the Personality that cast the Spell or Kiho that triggered playing the Ring. The Ring's play timing is later than its benefit's use timing. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: I only disagree in one term, the text in the ring says this: "Play Ring of Air after casting three or more Spells and/or Kiho in one turn. Elemental Reaction: After one of your Shugenja or Monks bows to cast a Spell or Kiho, bow Ring of Air to straighten that Shugenja or Monk."
If I take the ring with Walking the Way I still would have played 3 spells or kihos in my turn so why can I don't puit him in play?
A: Because you must play it immediately after casting the Spell. That means immediately after you've paid all its costs and everyone has had a chance to cancel it but refuses. This is still before it's done anything. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: According to your ruling on the Ring of Air/Walking the Way combination, the player in question shouldn't even be able to play the ring of water before he HAS to lay down the Ring of Air since that last battle action would not have resolved yet before his window of opportunity to play the Ring of Air is gone.
A: Even ignoring the Walking the Way ruling, this point doesn't matter. The Rings of Air and Water have the same timing relative to the action that triggers them. I don't see how you can argue that one has to be played before the other. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 26 Feb. 2004", 27 Feb 2004 - Q: Ok, say that I have Hoshi Chuichi out, and I play Purity of Spirit on an opposing Shadowlands personality. The card states "The caster need not bow if the target is Shadowlands". Can I bow him anyway, even though it says I need not?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: For the Ring of Air, if I have Ryoshun's First Gift on a Personality, and I play, for example, a Chasing Osano-Wo using that personality to cast the Kiho, and bow Ryoshun's First Gift to prevent the personality from bowing, does that count as a casting of a spell for the purposes of playing Ring of Air?
A: Yes. Both Chasing Osano-Wo and Ryoshun's Last Words are cast. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 24 Feb. 2004", 26 Feb 2004 - Q: 2) If I'm in battle and I just took my 4th battle action (which also happens to be my 3rd kiho action) can I play Ring of Water from my hand, Introspection off of it to get Ring of Air, and then play Ring of Air? or vice versa?
Yes and yes.--(jeff)
Ring of air:play after casting three or more spells/or kiho in one turn.
So if you have played 3 kiho in one turn, you may choose to play the ring of air whenever you want, even during battle resolution, even(I think) during the end phase and so on.
Not true. You must still play it immediately following its play condition.--(jeff)
Isn't that a contradiction? Shouldn't you then have to be required to play the Ring of Air/Water before taking a reaction (Introspection). Otherwise what would be the difference in taking 1 action to get the Ring of Whatever and however many actions in between enter play and playing the ring?
A: It is always possible to play more Reactions to the same original trigger until one of two things happen: A) All players elect in a row not to react anymore, or B) The trigger itself gets removed or mutated into something that can no longer be responded to.
A Reaction puts the game "on hold" right where it was until the Reaction finishes. That includes preserving whatever triggers are still "live" and legitimate to respond to. This is not the case when you are talking about delaying an arbitrary length of time to a later phase that same turn.
The thing is, Reactions can occur even during other Reactions. [DE p. 75] So you can have several layers "on hold" that become live again once these lower stages of Reaction are done.
So the two Ring example goes something like this:
Player 1's response to the fourth action: play Ring of Water Player 2's response to the Ring of Water: none Player 1's response to the Ring of Water: play Introspection Player 2's response to Introspection: none Player 1's response to Introspection: none. End. Player 2's response to the Ring of Water: none Player 1's response to the Ring of Water: none. End. Player 2's response to the fourth action: none Player 1's response to the fourth action: play Ring of Air Player 2's response to the Ring of air: none Player 1's response to the Ring of air: none. End. Player 1's response to the fourth action: none Player 2's response to the fourth action: none. End.
A: Yes and yes. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 23 Feb. 2004", 24 Feb 2004 - Q: Or could she use the Ring of Air to unbow herself, and at what point could that happen?
A: Immediately after bowing. [card text] The Ring of Air doesn't care of the Spell or Kiho even happens. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 10 Feb. 2004", 11 Feb 2004 - Q: I have a questions regarding the ring of air. Suppose I bow a monk to cast my 3rd kiho in a turn. If I understand the ruling correctly, to play the ring of Air, I have to play it as a reaction immediately after he bows before the kiho is resolved.
A: No. You play the Ring after all costs have been paid and all chances to cancel the Kiho before it begins resolving have gone by without the Kiho actually being canceled. This is still too late to react to the bowing itself. The Ring cannot straighten that caster. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: So I have the Ring of Air in my hand. For my third spell I cast Aid of the Grandmaster. I play the ring before I search for a card by the current timing. I then want to play Introspection. Do I do this before searching for the Aided card, after searching (and thus shuffling the card I aided for back into the deck), or can I choose?
A: Leon, get off my list.
For the rest of you: before searching due to the Aid's effect. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: With temple of Hoshi as a stronhold May I use the Ring of Air when one of my dragon clan personalities that is not a monk or a shugenja cast a kiho ?
A: Yes. This is a REVERSAL. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 5 Feb. 2004", 6 Feb 2004 - Q: Playing the ring of Air is "after" sharing strength is played, so I can't use the Ring to straighten Hoshi Chuichi?
A: No. See Rules Archive, Ring of Air. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 5 December 2003, Part 2", 6 Dec 2003 - Q: If someone casts a Kiho as a Monk or Shugenja can the Ring of Air straighten them?
A: Yes (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 27 November 2003, Part 2", 28 Nov 2003 - Q: Can Togashi Satsu, if he casts a kiho when bowed, use the Ring of Air to unbow?
A: No. "After one of your Shugenja or Monks bows..." (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 6 November 2003", 6 Nov 2003 - Q: If I play the Ring of Fire after winning my second duel in my turn, can I then bow the Ring of Fire for it's effect[?]
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 November 2003", 2 Nov 2003 - Q: [I]f I play Ring of Air "after" casting three or more Spells and/or Kiho in a turn, can I then use my next opportunity to react to the third Spell or Kiho to unbow the personality who cast it by using the ring?
A: No. Bowing occurs when costs are paid; the action has not resolved. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 November 2003", 2 Nov 2003 - Q: Can the Ring of Air be used to straighten non-monk/shugenja personalities that cast kiho as monk/shugenjas?
A: Yes, because the Ring's text say "straighten *that* Shugenja or Monk," namely the self-same Personality who just cast the spell or kiho. A Personality who can cast kiho / spells as a Monk or Shugenja gets treated as such in all ways for casting purposes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 31 October 2003", 31 Oct 2003 - Q: I draw a Walking the Way at any point during the game. Now on my turn, I walk the way for a walking the way, then walk for the 3rd copy, then walk for the Ring of AIr. Can I now play Air b/c I have satisifed the criteria, 3 Spells?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 24 September 2003", 24 Sep 2003 - Q: Is it correct to: Cast Aid of the Grand Master. Play Ring of Air. Play Introspection. Resolve Air of the Grand Master by finding a card and putting it on top of the deck.
A: No. You can't play the Ring before "resolving" Aid of the Grand Master. The spell effect must be done before the Ring of Air can be played. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 2 July 2003", 3 Jul 2003 - Q: Why is Ring of Air so weak? It's harder to get out than any of the others by these rulings, and its effect is weaker since 90% of what you'd want to redirect you can't hurl back at your opponent... (can't target his bowed stuff, can't make ranged attacks target his own army...)
A: The Ring of Air has always been an all-or-nothing Ring: if your opponent is casting spells at you it completely wrecks his plans, but it's absolutely useless against anyone else. And even with the MRP (which went into effect when Gold Edition was released, by the way), it's either the easiest Ring to play or a very close second behind the Ring of the Void. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: Is using Finding the harmony considered playing a ring?
A: "Kiho Limited: Bow one of your Monks or Shugenja to permanently switch an Elemental Ring in your hand with one you have in play. THIS IS NOT CONSIDERED PLAYING A RING. The new Ring does not count toward an Enlightenment Victory." [card text] Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: I cant switch the ring of AIr in and out more than once a turn? Say i have Ring of Air in play from an earlier turn i have 3 spell effects in hand or showing on the board, or 3 Finding the Harmonys . Can i Switch a ring in play (Air) with one in hand and then Switch the Ring of AIr back in with another ring in play. Then switch out the ring of Air agian thus creating 3 spell effects then legally put the Ring of Air in play. Does the Play once per turn rule Screw my move up or What?
A: The Ring of Air can only be played immediately after the third innate ability and/or spell effect you create in one turn. There is no direct rule or ruling that it is only playable once per turn -- it's a natural side-effect of being restricted to the third "magical" action only. (You could play multiple Rings of Air after the same trigger if you manage to get more than one in your hand.)
If you've already played the Ring of Air once, then Finding the Harmony will be at least your fourth spell effect/innate ability. You can't play the Ring of Air anymore. Jeff Alexander, "post for 12 May 2003", 13 May 2003 - Q: If that is the case, then in the situation described in my original question, I could simply wait until I had drawn all five cards in to my hand, then before the End phase is over, bow a holding and Handen to increase the gold production to 5, completing my third innate ability and fulfilling the requirement for the Ring of Air.
No because the sequence of the game is: Dynasty - buy stuff from provinces; discard face-up (optional) End Phase - draw a card, formally end your turn.
A: Untrue. Your turn ends when you tell your opponent you're done, not when you take your normal draw. [GE p. 59] It is legal to do things in your End Phase after that draw (although bowing a Holding to produce Gold just because you want to is not one of them). Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 May 2003", 10 May 2003 - Q: Excuse my ignorance, but I no don't keep old e-mails and I recall the list having hammered this topic, but I ask again so that I can put it in my memory banks for good.
Ring of Air redirects the targeting. I believe Jeff also said that targeting is decided before the action, so that monks and shugenja can target themselves with their own spell effects which require them to bow.
So, if all that is true, I can redirect "The Touch of Death" back to the caster...
A: No. He could not have cast it on himself in the first place. Jeff Alexander, "post for 6 May 2003", 7 May 2003 - Q: Besides, when you redirect the spell with Ring of Air, it is as if you are now the caster of the spell.
A: Also untrue.
"You can redirect an action only to something else it could have targeted originally. Should you redirect an action, treat it as though it had been aimed at its new target all along." [ibid.]
The second sentence says nothing about treating the action as coming from you now instead of its original source and player. More to the point, the first sentence addresses the matter directly: any Personality that your opponent could not have aimed Touch of Death at originally is also an illegal choice for whomever is redirecting it. Jeff Alexander, "post for 1 May 2003", 2 May 2003 - Q: This is not that important as far as the person playing ToD is but is important for redirecting it with the Ring of Air.
Is this a case of it being implicitly legal as ToD requires a bowed personality to target or is this a case of the rulebook holding sway?
A: Touch of Death does not explicitly allow targeting your own bowed Personalities. The rulebook rule that the only implicit exception is actions that straighten cards still holds. Jeff Alexander, "post for 21 February 2003", 22 Feb 2003 - Q: Ring of Air "Play this card after the third Spell effect your cards create and/or innate ability your cards use in one turn. Elemental Benefit: Once per turn, whenever a card creates a Spell effect, you may redirect the effect to another target."
Walking the Way "Limited: Bow this Shugenja and destroy this Spell to get a card from your Fate deck and add the card to your hand. Shuffle the deck."
Can a Walking the Way be "taken away" with ring of Air.
This is a Target question, "your deck" and "your hand" refers to the caster, can I use the Ring of Air to make it like I cast the spell????
A: The answer is in the Gold Edition rulebook on page 47:
] You can redirect an action only to something else it could have ] targeted originally. Should you redirect an action, treat it ] as though it had been aimed at its new target all along. You ] cannot redirect untargeted actions or actions that give no ] choice for their target (such as a card that targets "your ] Stronghold").
So: no. Jeff Alexander, "post for 20 January 2003", 21 Jan 2003 - Q: I'm asking this as I work on an old brotherhood open deck and wonder how I'm going to get the Ring of Air in play without using insane numbers of kihos.
A: He'll still have to use kihos, spells, and/or shugenja. Tattoos are not spell effects. (However, if he has a Tattooed shugenja and he gives her a Tattoo that grants her an ability, that ability will be an "innate ability", and using it will count towards playing the Ring.) Jeff Alexander, "post for 9 December 2002", 10 Dec 2002 - Q: If I have the Ring of Air in play, and my opponent casts Walking the Way:
A) I get to look at his entire Fate Deck, and redirect WtW to the card of my choosing.
B) I pick a card from his Fate Deck for him to draw, but I don't get to see what it is.
A: C) You don't get to redirect anything because searching your deck for a card is not an instance of targeting. Jeff Alexander, "post for 28 October 2002", 29 Oct 2002 - Q: Just to clarify for other people that don't understand. This is done as long as there are more than two people involved. So technically you cannot play "honor tennis."
The Wind's Truth Reads, "The Wind's Truth 0G 4FV Kiho Elemental Political Reaction: When any player gains or loses Honor, bow one of your Monks or Shugenja with Chi greater than or equal to the gain or loss to redirect the gain or loss to a different player." [MRP, A Perfect Cut, 4 September 2001] The source and amount of the gain or loss remain unchanged. [7/12/99] The Ring of Air can redirect it, but only to another "different player," so you can't send the gain/loss right back to the player it was just taken from. In a two-player game, the Ring cannot be used on it. [Netnews, 9/2/99]
Targets the honor gain / loss and the new recipient. [JA, 26 April 2002]
A: You're getting two rulings confused.
You can, in fact, use a second Wind's Truth to redirect a gain directly back to the player that the first Wind's Truth took it from. The Ring of Air ruling doesn't apply when you're trying to redirect the gain a second time, but rather when you're trying to change who the FIRST Wind's Truth redirects it to. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 May 2002", 15 May 2002 - Q: If I have Ring of Air in play and my opponent tries to attack me with 6 ranged 1 attacks generated by Cascading Fires, what is the result?
Since the ranged attacks are effects produced by Cascading Fires, which is only one spell effect according to a recent ruling. With that in mind....
1) Can I redirect the spell with Ring of Air?
A: Yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 2 May 2002", 3 May 2002 - Q: I'm still not quite sure about spells that have multiple effects and how they get counted for redirection and the Ring of Air.
A: The Ring of Air needs three separate castings and innate ability activations, total. The term "spell effect" is there to cover Spells and Kihos together.
Any given redirection effect can typically change only one targeting selection, regardless of whether the action it's redirecting is counted as one effect or several. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 April 2002", 24 Apr 2002 - Q: look at another example, Emergence of the Masters. [...] c) Nakamuro XP can redirect either the "send home" or "destroy" part of EotM but for a different reason than part a). EotM produces only one spell effect. However, Nakamuro can only redirect one of the parts that targets a card in his army. This is due to an anomaly in the Space-Time Continuum that somehow allows each of the four parts of EotM to be "a spell effect" for Nakamuro's redirection ability but not a spell effect for putting the Ring of Air into play.
A: That would be right, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 April 2002", 24 Apr 2002 - Q: So to solve my problem, the Ring of Air should require performing three actions that produce spell effects rather than just producing three spell effects.
A: That's a very good way of looking at it (and wording it, in the future). Jeff Alexander, "post for 23 April 2002", 24 Apr 2002 - Q: Hello Jeff,
In a pre-release tournament I played against a Pheonix, and he was of course using the personality, Isawa Maasaki. I questioned his use of the ability "Open: Once per turn, Maasaki gives another personality a Force and Chi bonus equal to the number of spells attached to Maasaki (minimum +1F/+1C). " The player was using the ability to give another personality +1/+1 when he had no spells attached to the personality. His explanation for this was the final note (minimum +1F/+1C), as there would be no need to put this final explanation of the ability if this was the intended use. My only counter argument was that someone could not use the ability to give a +0/+0, to get the Ring of Air out.
Please Help
Thank you,
Steve Mayberry
A: It means the ability will always give at least a +1/+1 bonus, even if used when Maasaki has zero Spells. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 April 2002", 11 Apr 2002 - Q: I hate to "me too" this message but... it does say minimum +1F/+1C, otherwise it would say something along the effect of not being able to perform this ability if you have no spells attached. Also, before the first MRP on Dragon Tattoo (and I have a post on the second MRP I have yet to send because, until recently, I have been experiencing errors with the list), one could have a tattooed Shugenja breath 0 +1F/+1C fire tokens three times and play the Ring of Air because 0 was a valid number.
A: With the Dragon Tattoo, it has always been (and is STILL) possible to add one Fire token three times in a row, thus playing the Ring of Air "for free" anyway.
What isn't possible anymore is using the same Dragon Tattoo to play the Ring of Air multiple times in one turn...something people no longer care about doing anyway with the change to Finding the Harmony. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 April 2002", 11 Apr 2002 - Q: I am trying to enlighten in Gold...stop laughing!! Using Kyuden Hitomi...ok, one more snicker out of you and that's it!! I have a problem with some advice given to me about the Dragon Tattoo to drop the Ring of Air. The wording and the sheer cheese of it is grating on me. Can anyone confirm the ability to use Dragon Tattoo three times in succession to fulfill Air?
A: If you play the Dragon Tattoo on a shugenja, yes. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 February 2002", 15 Feb 2002 - Q: yep if it is on a shugenja i believe no on a samurai...not sure about that. If you want to make the Cheese even worse use it three time to add 0 fire tokens to your personality :)
A: No longer legal, by MRP of the Dragon Tattoo. Jeff Alexander, "post for 14 February 2002", 15 Feb 2002 - Q: Scenario the Second*
As the above, but Bantaro has a Conspiracy token (more old school). a) You could choose to move the Conspiracy token, but the user of Sympathetic Energies would choose the target to receive the token. b) The user of Sympathetic Energies, noting that Bantaro is a "target" but is not clearly defined to be a specific target, laughs (making you feel small) and moves the -2F token onto Bantaro.
Obviously, this sort of thing can come up with the Ring of Air, too.
A: Bantaro gets to change one targeting decision. Sympathetic Energies targets one token and two Personalities under Gold Edition rules; in general, Bantaro could change one of those two Personality targets. By the nature of Sympathetic Energy's effect, though, he can't swap himself in as the source of the moving token, so he can only be the new recipient. He also can't change which token gets moved. Jeff Alexander, "post for 22 January 2002", 23 Jan 2002 - Q: On Wednesday, November 7, 2001, at 07:53 PM, Jeff Alexander wrote:
Kiho cards are Action cards, not Spell cards, although their effects are treated as Spell effects.
-snip-
No. According to the rulebook, anything that interacts with casting or targeting spells works with kihos as well.
I write to ask whether these two statements combine to tell us that kiho cast by monks may count towards playing the Ring of Air.
A: Sure. The Ring of Air mentions spell effects, not spell effects from shugenja. Jeff Alexander, "post for 8 November 2001", 9 Nov 2001 - Q: With the changed text of Ring of Air in GE, it is possible to direct effects not targetted at you, correct?
A: It has always been possible to redirect any spell effect with the Ring of Air, not just those that targeted you originally. Jeff Alexander, "post for 10 October 2001", 11 Oct 2001 - Q: BAH! Snow Crane is nothing compared to the abuse of the Dragon Tattoo. Nothing. I can attach 0 Fire Tokens... an infinite number of times in my limited phase to get the Ring of Air in play FIVE times in ONE TURN!
A: Once Gold Edition comes out, this will be neither possible (due to an MRP of the Ring of Air) nor desirable (due to an MRP of Finding the Harmony). I don't want to issue a ruling on one card only to need to reverse it once the more problematic of the two in the combo is changed. Jeff Alexander, "replies to 18 June", 25 Jun 2001 - Q: How about a clarification on the exalted Ugu. Once upon a time it was said (in the name of balance) that Ugu could not react multiple times with differnt cards to Ring of Air. Now that the Dragon tat infinite innate has been let go can we let Ugu and his pals react away?
A: Ugu falls squarely under the "you can only use each printed instance of a Reaction once per trigger" rule. No. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 19 February 2001", 24 Feb 2001 - Q: Wow... I was told tonight that with Ring of Air, you can redirect Wind's Truth. Any confirmation of this?
A: You can. Here's how:
Player A gains honor.
Player B cast's Wind's Truth to transfer that gain to himself.
Player A wants to use his Ring of Air to change the Wind's Truth's target, but who can he change it to? He can't change it to himself, since he wasn't a legal target for the original casting. He can't change it to Player B since he's the target NOW. He has to pick some third player. If it's a two-player game, he's out of luck. Jeff Alexander, "Rulings for 16 January 2001", 19 Jan 2001 - Q: One of the main reasons I definitely want to stay away from considering these as actions that are sorta printed on the personality is all the problems that come with printed actions and shugenja. Would the Lessons action be considered an innate ability? Can you use Fires of Retribution in response to it? Does it count for Ring of Air? Things really start to get messy at that point, and I think it's just much simpler to make the floating actions (other than Tactician) target their performers.
Does this imply that a Shugenja/Tactician (of which I believe there is only one naturally occurring in the game, Moto Notu) is performing an innate ability when he uses his Tactician trait?
A: No! That's exactly what I was trying to stay away from! Tactician is *not* an action printed on the card of the Tactician, it's just a floating action that can only be used to give that personality a force bonus. Doesn't target, isn't printed on the personality.
Look at it this way. Each Tactician generates a floating action that says 'Battle: Once per battle, discard a card from your hand to give this Tactician a force bonus equal to the focus value of the discard.' Each Tac generates one of those, and you choose which action you're using whenever you activate a specific Tactician's trait. It's still not printed on the card, though, so it doesn't count as an innate ability. Better? Vaughn Derderian, "Rules for November 27th", 27 Nov 2000 - Q: I was looking at tools for an Enlightenment deck when I noticed Imperial Summons has new text in the Oracle. Bowing the Stronghold to pay for the cost of Imperial Summons does not count toward the Ring of Air? When did this change occur and when does it take effect? Is this future templating for Onyx Edition rules changes?
Imperial Summons Favor Political Open: Discard the Imperial Favor to bow a target Personality. Political Open: Bow your target unbowed Stronghold to bow a target Personality.
Ring of Air Play after you resolve two or more Favor actions in one turn. You may discard this Ring from your hand to use its ability without cost.
A: Good catch, and our apologies. That's a mistake in Oracle and it's being corrected. Bowing your stronghold to play Imperial Summons does still qualify as a Favor action for Ring of Air.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS RULING IS NOW OBSOLETE DUE TO THE MRP OF IMPERIAL SUMMONS BEING RELEASED. Jon Palmer, "Imperial Summons - Alderac Entertainment Group", 5 Mar 2015 - Q: Hi again,
If I have resolved 2 favor actions but do not currently have Ring of Air in hand and then search for it, I assume I still get to play it. (Play after you resolve two or more Favor actions in one turn.) My assumption is based on the idea it would otherwise have said "Play after you resolve your second favor action in one turn".
Assuming the above is legal, what exactly is the timing of playing Ring of Air? It isn't an interrupt, so can I play it while something else is announced? For example I have announced the Limited action of Ring of the Void to put it into play. Can I then play Ring of Air before it is discarded by the effect of putting Ring of the Void into play?
Thanks a lot! And if you could include where in the rules I could have found this answer, that would be swell too!
A: Any timing that says "Play after" means "Play immediately after". You have to play the Ring of Air immediately after you resolve your second or later Favor action during a turn. Jon Palmer, "questions on timing of IvE Ring of Air", 5 Jan 2015 - Q: Can you announce the Reserve / Equip battle action without having a legal "Reserve" attachment in your hand?
Here is the situation:
I have Ring of Air and Tsujinken's Coin in play and a 4 gold cost reserve follower. I announce the reserve equip battle action and bow the Coin to produce 2 gold. I choose to use 0 gold to pay the gold cost of the action. I do not have a 0 gold cost reserve attachment so the equip fails. Next action I use the ring to straighten the coin. Finally I announce the reserve equip again, bow the coin to produce 2 gold. Use the 4 gold in the pool to pay for the action and equip the reserve follower.
A: This is currently legal.
However, the Rules will be changed with Twenty Festivals to close this "loophole". Alex Jones, "Reserve / Equip without Attaching", 18 Nov 2014 - Q: I just want to confirm that one cannot drop Ring of Air from Official Sanction uses, regardless of the card saying "favor tokens." Thanks!
A: Official Sanction's actions are not "Favor" actions, despite the type of token they create and interact with. Brook Cunningham, "Official Sanction", 29 Aug 2014 - Q: Off of this:http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=108198
Would it be legal to announce the Ring of Air action, bow Yoshinko to pay for the RoA action (having all 3 gold left over in your pool), and use that action to straighten her?
Then could you, as your next action, use her again, with the 3 in your pool, to buy the Tiger Claw?
A: As #2 above, Ring of Air's action has no Gold Cost, so you can't trigger a Gold-producing trait with it. Brook Cunningham, "Yashinko xp with Ring of Air", 8 May 2014 - Q: Question, if all my holdings are bowed and I have Yoritomo Yashinko xp and Ring of Air in play, can I play Tiger Claw by bowing Yashinko for 3 gold, then unbowing her with Ring of Air and bowing her for another 3 gold to pay for Tiger Claw?
A: No, sorry; you have to completely finish paying for, then resolving, the Equip action for the Tiger Claw before you can take the Ring of Air's Open action.
Now, if you had an attachment to Equip, or action to take, for 1G before Equipping the Claw, you could pay for that with Yashinko, leaving 2G left over, then take the Ring of Air's action, THEN use the 2 leftover Gold plus another bowing of Yashinko for the 5G T-Claw. Brook Cunningham, "Yashinko xp with Ring of Air", 6 May 2014 - Q: I figured that because Severed From the Emperor interrupt triggers off of a favor action, it should meet the requirements of Ring of Air.
A: No, sorry. Severed From the Emperor's granted ability is not "Favor" itself (doesn't have the "Favor" keyword preceding its action designator), so it does not count for the Ring of Air's play requirements. Brook Cunningham, "Ring of Air + Severed From The Emperor + Imperial Summons", 22 Mar 2014 - Q: 2) My opponent attempts to play Imperial Summons against me when I have Severed From the Emperor in play. He however bows his stronghold to do this (therefore not using the Favor). I attempt to react with Severed From the Emperor.
Q3) If a substitute action is taken that is equivalent to discarding the favor, can Severed from the Emperor be used?
A: Well, let's start by saying that Severed From the Emperor's granted ability can Interrupt any action, if you want to lose 5 Honor for the fun of it. Its negation effect, will then just fail, unless the action you Interrupt is Favor and it then targets your cards.
That said, yes, Severed CAN negate Summons no matter how the other player chooses to the fulfill the conditions of the effect. All Severed cares about that the action has the "Favor" keyword and that it then targets your card(s); after that, boom, negated. Brook Cunningham, "Ring of Air + Severed From The Emperor + Imperial Summons", 22 Mar 2014 - Q: You have said that
"The Good Faith Rule for IvE will include the fact that in order to take a Favor action, you must either control the Favor or have another way of paying the cost of the discard of the Favor. So you cannot have Favor actions "Fail" to play the Ring of Air."
Even if I have the Favor, can I choose not to discard it and not gain the full effects of the action? (That would be because I want to keep it for another Favor action).
A: No.
Discarding the favor is an effect of the Favor actions. You can't choose not to discard the Favor if you have it, just as you can't choose not to bow your target unbowed Personality if you play Unassailable Defense. Jon Palmer, "Ring of Air + Good Faith Rule", 11 Mar 2014 - Q: So with all of this new "everything is an effect" wording, I'm confused.
On my turn, I do not control the Imperial Favor. The player ability: "Favor Political Limited: Discard the Imperial Favor and a card to draw a card." does not have any costs or required targeting. So, can I announce it even though I don't have the favor, and not discard a card or draw?
On my next action (still do not control the favor) could I play Imperial Summons "Favor Political Open: Bow your Stronghold or discard the Imperial Favor to bow a target Personality." choosing to discard the Imperial Favor, but failing to and thus failing to bow anyone, and play the Ring of Air?
[Ring of air text: Play after you resolve two or more Favor actions in one turn.]
A: The Good Faith Rule for IvE will include the fact that in order to take a Favor action, you must either control the Favor or have another way of paying the cost of the discard of the Favor. So you cannot have Favor actions "Fail" to play the Ring of Air. Jon Palmer, "Ring of Air", 5 Mar 2014 - Q: Data:

----------------------------------------------------------------- Situation: I have a Dishonored Kimura and activate his Limited.

Ricardo Morales
* Sorry for my english, im too rusty
A: As you point out, rehonoring a Personality only happens if "an action or trait that targeted, came from, or was performed by one or more of his or her dishonorable Personalities."
Kimura's action creates a delayed effect that increases an honor gain, but does not itself gain honor. The honor gain comes from the rulebook via the Proclaim ability.
Therefore a Dishonorable Kimura will not rehonor if she is Dishonorable when her controller uses her ability, and her controller will gain honor off the Proclaim ability as normal, increasing it to match the Focus Value of the discarded card. Ben Higgins, "Dishonored Kimura and Proclaim", 29 Nov 2013 - Q: What is the latest I can act on the word 'after'?
For example Ring of Air says 'After you resolve your third or later Spell or Kiho action in one turn from cards with different titles: You may put this card into play from your hand.'
What is the latest I can act upon this, or other instances of 'after'? I assume before the turn ends, but is there a smaller time frame for it?
Sorry about the vague wording in the title.
A: A trait, delayed effect or Reaction which happens "after" an effect is *triggered* by that effect. It happens now, not at some later time.
"After" indicates that the triggering effect happens first, then the triggered trait, delayed effect or Reaction. This is in contrast to "before", where the triggered trait, delayed effect or Reaction happens first, then the triggering effect (if that effect isn't negated, etc).
See Timing. Alex Jones, "When is 'After'?", 13 Jul 2012 - Q: Here is my question.
Are Rings strategy cards.
Strategy cards are cards you play from your hand and then discard. A strategy usually has one or more abilities.
Rings by the last sentence says. You can also discard them from your hand for a one-shot effect.
For example. Can i play Ring of Earth, then Ring of Air, Void and then String of Victories. Pick up Void and play Void by its own text? All Rings played from hand. One-shot effects.
Thanks
Togashi O-Fu
A: The Elemental Rings are not Strategy cards. They are Ring cards.
In your example, you have only played one Strategy (String of Victories) towards putting Ring of the Void in to play by its own text. Ben Higgins, "Strategy and Rings", 20 May 2012 - Q: Say I played a non-kiho action during a battle and then play my third kiho action and put Ring of Air (RoA) into play. I then play 1 introspection to search for a second introspection and then react action to RoA entering play to play the second introspection to search for the third introspection and then react action to RoA entering play to play the third introspection to search for Ring of the Void (RoV) and then play RoV.
So: Put RoA into play -react with introspection to search for introspection -react with introspection to search for introspection -react with introspection to search for RoV Put RoV into play
Is that correct for the introspection timing?
I think so because each introspection fully resolves before the "window" to play Reactions of RoA entering play closes.
A: Yes, you are correct. Jon Palmer, "Intropection Timing again", 21 Feb 2012 - Q: About this answer, I would like a clarification.
I think that I can take the action, for the purposes of fulfilling the requirements for Ring of Air or Ring of Water, but the effects (movement of the personality) will fail. Am I right, or am I not allowed to take the action at all?
A: You are correct. Nothing prevents you taking the action, but the Region's trait will cause the movement effect to fail. Brook Cunningham, "Flow of the elements vs Mountainous Region", 5 Jan 2011 - Q: In reference to this.
Just to be clear. If I have played 3 spells or Kihos (none of which are One with the World, and all different) already this turn, then play Ring of Air from my Hand, per card text. Can I then use One with the World to return it to my hand, and play it again immediately, after One with the World resolves.
Assuming that works(and I believe it does)...If I play the ability on a second One with the World after this, to again return Ring of Air to my hand. Will it still trigger the trait on Ring of Air? In short, does the fact that the just resolved spell/kiho shares a title with a previously played spell/kiho ability preclude it from triggering Ring of Air a second time, or does Ring of Air simply look for three unique titles total in the current turn?
Ring or Air: After you resolve your third or later Spell or Kiho action in one turn from cards with different titles: You may put this card into play from your hand.
A: It is sufficient you have taken three Spell or Kiho actions from cards with different titles this turn; that you may have taken actions from cards with the same title as these is not relevant. Alex Jones, "claiming the throne and one with the world", 17 Nov 2010 - Q: I played two kihos (seeking the path and song of the world) I then played Changing Paths for my 3rd kiho action for the turn with different names. Can I then go fetch my Ring of Air in my discard pile with Paths as it successfully resolved making it trigger ring of air's trait?
A: Hasn't been answered for Ring of Air, but basically the same question came up for Ring of Water:

You see, I believe I've asked in the past if Reaction chains (in this case, the Strike the Summit/Center/Base chain) would count towards bringing the Ring of Water into play. I was told that, no, the chain would not help me towards this goal. (It would help me with the Ring of Air, though.) I was told that I could only bring the Water Ring into play if I'd play all the different, "second-use" Battle actions on each Strike kiho, seperately, beforehand. (And then a fourth Battle Action, of course.)
Has that changed? Because if so, it would be nice to know. If not, maybe adding this to the answer of the other user's question would help to avoid confusion.
In any case, that was just something that roundhouse kicked me in the eye.
A: For some weird reason, I overlooked that those cards were being used for Reactions, not Battle actions. Sorry. Zen Faulkes, "RE: Question about playing Rings", 23 Aug 2007 - Q: If I play Strike of the Summit, then as a reaction play Strike of the Center and then as a reaction play Strike of the Summit, can I play Ring of Air from my hand. I wasn't sure if reactions counted towards this requirement.
A: Reactions are actions. Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Question about Playing Rings", 23 Aug 2007 - Q: If I happned to have a Ring of Water in my hand at the same time and played one more battle action, could I then play Ring of Water from my hand even though I used 3 actions towards meeting the requirements to play Ring of Air?
A: No. The Ring of Water requires Battle actions. Not Reactions. (Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Question about Playing Rings", 23 Aug 2007 - Q: Is it legal to take the action on Ring of Air even if you have no bowed personalities, specifically to trigger a 'When you use an action on a RIng' reaction?
A: No. You can't take an action without a required target. Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Air and no bowed personalities", 6 Aug 2007 - Q: Since merely targetting a personality in a province with an action does not mean that personality performs that action, Imbue Chi's Reaction isn't performed by anyone, right?
And since the glossary definition of "caster" includes performing the Kiho, no one is casting it and City of Rememberance should be able to use it, right?
Same question about whether or not it counts as "cast" for the likes of Ring of Air applies.
A: I'm forwarding this question over to Jeff in regards to imbue Chi. There isn't anything solid to go on in the rulebook or archive as far as I can see. Martin Lund, "Followup on performing and Kiho, now with EoME", 3 Apr 2005 - Q: Is focusing in a duel with a card playing the card?
A: No, unless the card says so via special text. Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Air and Focusing vs Playing and Ikoma storyteller", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Can you ring of air to straighten the personality who cast the Kiho that allowed you to play the RoA?
A: Archive, Ring of Air. Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Air and Focusing vs Playing and Ikoma storyteller", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: Can the Ikoma that gives +1/+1 to Lion who win an opposed battle use that ability on himself if he was in the battle?
A: Please give titles. There are a lot of Ikoma Personalities out there, and a lot of questions to answer, and I don't like guessing games. Zen Faulkes, "Ring of Air and Focusing vs Playing and Ikoma storyteller", 23 Mar 2005 - Q: So I bring Scribing the Tao into play, copying the Ring of the Void's Limited ability. I bow the spell instead of RoV and the 4Chi shugenja it's on to draw the card. Does this count as casting a spell? (For say, Ring of Air?)
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Scribing the Tao and RoV", 7 Mar 2005 - Q: [OBH] can you use ring of air to straighten a personality at home when you are in a battle? this is relevant to current match going on right now. please help @Brook Cunningham @kempy_nezumi a player
A: No. Rule of Location. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 26 May 2026 - Q: [ShE] if my second Favor action of the turn gets negated by The Line Must Be Drawn Here, am I still allowed to play the Ring of Air?
A: Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 31 Dec 2025 - Q: Tireless Battle/Interrupt: Take an additional Battle or Interrupt, whichever this action was taken as, from your target Ring in play or your discard pile, ignoring bow costs. If the Ring was in the discard pile, reshuffle it into your Fate deck. Ring of Air is Repeatable Battle/Open (bow): Straighten one or two of your target cards in one unit.
A: Yeah, KingAnj is right. Even though you can use it without bowing it, there's no explicit waiver for the Rule that bowed cards can't use their non-Tireless actions. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 3 Jun 2025 - Q: @Brook Cunningham Can you use the Dragon Stronghold on a bowed ring? Let's say the Ring of Air
A: Don't have the SH text handy, sorry; on phone. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 3 Jun 2025 - Q: [ShE] If I take the favor with either Kano or Suikihime and then use it with the second or third ability of either of them, those 2 actions are considered favor and allow me to play the ring of air?
A: Lobbying is not a Favor action.
(Replying to a player: "Got it. I would need to use both the second and third abilities of the winds in the same turn, right?") Or potentially a Strategy or Personality or other card that has a Favor action. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 22 May 2025 - Q: hey, I have a question. This has probably been answered a thousand times... but I figure I should verify how this interaction works. I'm doing this for my JadeEx box I'm running for KublaCon, and feel like I should know pretty well how it interacts.
So, if I have the ring of air in play, and I play two actions on kihos, shugenjas, or spells, and Then play Finding the Harmony to swap the Ring of Air for a different Ring, can I then immediately play the Ring of Air as I have now satisfied the conditions for playing it? furthermore, if I do this a second time, are the conditions still met? If I miss the trigger to play it after a kiho, can I play it later in the same turn?
A: Yes, FETA was a "cheese" deck in Jade (pun intended) which stood for "Finding Enlightenment Through Air". You could do all of that except the last thing. You have to React with Air right after taking the 3rd (or later) Spell/Kiho action; you can't wait and do it anytime later in the turn. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 4 May 2024 - Q: (looking at 20F Ring of Air):
A: Yeah, there's a decent amount of Favor Strategy actions to choose from besides the Rulebook ones. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 17 Nov 2023 - Q: Thank you. In that case, how does one play the Ring of Air? Essentially have to have some other way to spend Favor?
A: Unless, you're playing in a pre-Once-Per-Turn Ruleset. Brook Cunningham, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 17 Nov 2023 - Q: Would both the lobby action and this one satisfy the conditions for Ring of air? In a single turn obviously
A: do not mistake "Lobby" actions for "Favor" actions; they are two separate types Jeff Williamson, "Onyx Lives #rules-questions", 27 Sep 2023 - Q: I have no memory... Can I declare and cast scouring flood as an attacker when there are no defenders? If so, would it count as a successful cast for Ring Of Air(celestial)?
A: It's not a cost, per se, but it's a condition you must satisfy in order to declare the action. Alex Jones, "Oracle of the Void #rules", 11 Jul 2022
