So, as per the Emperor Edition text,
Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield, target a Personality: Negate all current and new Force bonuses and penalties on him from actions.
Does this mean that Shameful Injury shuts down permanent force bonus? Such as Arrival of Obsidian Champion and RItual of Summoning?
A: The previous wording on Shameful Injury dates from a time when the negation rules were slightly different. Under the current rules, the old and new wordings are equivalent, but the new wording is much shorter.
Shameful Injury suppresses existing permanent force bonuses (from actions) until the end of the turn. Alex Jones, "Shameful Injury (EE) + Permanent Force Bonus", 30 Apr 2012 - Q: Greetings,
if Moshi Kazue: Mantis Clan • Thunder • Shugenja • Naval Reaction: After a Ranged Attack targets a card: Give the Ranged Attack +1 strength. Forceval 3 Chi 4 Honor 0 Gold 7 Phonor 2
casts Ritual of Summoning: Maho Limited: Destroy this card: Permanently set the performing Shugenja's Force and Chi to 5, and permanently give him Shadowlands • Nonhuman • Oni and the ability, "Battle: Bow this card: Ranged 7 Attack." Lose 3 Honor. Gold 4 Focus 0
is he able to increase his own RA?
A: Yes.
The order of steps when taking an action is Announcement, Targeting, Costs, Effects. Kazue's Reaction is used after the target is declared, which is before she bows to pay the cost of the Battle action. Alex Jones, "Moshi Kazue & Ritual of Summoning", 13 May 2010 - Q: So even though they are a static bonus once he becomes set to 5 they do not increase his force unless they happen after the ritual?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 14 Feb 2010 - Q: If i ritual then attach a scouring flood his force would be 7 but if i attach the scouring flood then ritual (in this situation with the guidance in play) he goes down to a 5?
A: Yes. Again, I recommend reading the examples in the comprehensive rules, which deal with just such cases: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#S ... to_a_value
The only tiny wrinkle that differs here is the addition of the word "permanent," which just means "past the end of turn," not "base stat" or "printed stat," which seems to be what people are thinking. Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 14 Feb 2010 - Q: Sorry for asking so many questions about something that i'm sure you guys are tired of talking about
A: Heh. "If I Force of Will a 0PH Personality with a Wakizashi attached, does he live?" was first asked back when the game's first expansion, Shadowlands, was released about 14 years ago.
So yeah, you come to peace with certain questions, and just accept that some things can't be easily got at by intuition alone. Which is why there's a boring but consistent math procedure in the rules for handling stat bonuses. Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 14 Feb 2010 - Q: Hypothetical: I am a Phoenix player with Shiba's Guidance in play. My shugenja performs ritual of summoning (permanently sets his force to 5). I discard Shiba's Guidance for its effect. At this point my Shugenja who performed Ritual of Summoning has a force of 4, correct?
A: Yes. See http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#S ... to_a_value.
Many people intuitively think that "permanently set a stat to a value" means "permanently set a base stat to a value." It doesn't (unless the card were to actually say "base"). Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 14 Feb 2010 - Q: What will Ningen's force bonus on subsequent turns from the turn you play Ritual of Summoning?
A: His force stays 5 unless a new bonus applies. "Permanently set the performing Shugenja's Force and Chi to 5" (Ritual of Summoning card text). Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 13 Feb 2010 - Q: I'm having a hard time sorting through all the thread on Ritual of summoning. So if this is answered someone else please just point me to it since i cant find it.
I have Ningen in play with Shiba's Guidance. I cast Ritual of summoning on Ningen and use it. Is his force now 5? or is it 7?
thanks,
Jeffy No Oni
A: Setting a stat to a certain value implies that you are giving an appropriate stat bonus or penalty to their current stat, with all bonuses and penalties to that stat accounted for.
See http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Setting_stats_to_a_value for more details.
Shiba Ningen xp2's Force will be 5. Dan Jacobson, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 13 Feb 2010 - Q: the ranged attack Moshi Awako would win with (Ritual of Summoning) is:
A: It would have the Thunder keyword by virtue of now being "on" the Shugenja (http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Abilities). It would not have the Maho keyword. Zen Faulkes, "Moshi Awako + Ritual of Summoning", 25 Sep 2009 - Q: In regards to viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77744
Why does "Setting a stat to a value" look for anything other than the current value of the stat? This, at least to me, goes against the blind cards philosophy completely.
In the following example:
1. Houhou is given a -4 force penalty with Asako Serizawa. 2. Houhou casts Ritual of Summoning. 3. Turn ends, and -4 force penalty from Asako Serizawa expires.
Why does Ritual of Summoning see Houhou's force as anything but 0? Should't it be as follows:
1. Houhou is given a -4 force penalty with Asako Serizawa.
---Houhou now has a -4F penalty until end of turn, and 0 force.
2. Houhou casts Ritual of Summoning.
---Ritual of Summoning checks Houhou's force. It's zero. It gives Houhou a permanent +5F bonus. Houhou now has a -4F penalty and a +5F bonus, therefore has 1 force.
3. Turn ends, -4F penalty goes away, Houhou has a +5F bonus, for a total 7F.
Back to my question - Why does Ritual of Summoning care for anything other than Houhou's current force?
~Andrew
A: But Ritual of Summoning doesn't say, "Give the Shugenja +5f," it says, "Set the Shugenja's force to 5." The Rules say this means, give the Personality a force bonus or penalty sufficient to make his force 5.
In the case of a Houhou with a -4f penalty, a bonus of +7f is required to make Houhou's force 5.
See Setting stats to a value: "To set a stat to a value, give an appropriate bonus or penalty." Alex Jones, "Ritual of summoning and negative force bonus", 24 Jul 2009 - Q: (I)f I manage to kill Hou Hou, later they can use it's ability to bring it back and it will include the changes set for by the Ritual of Summoning due to it never being considered face down, from in play to dead to in play again?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of summoning and negative force bonus", 24 Jul 2009 - Q: In this topic - http://alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=77744
Ritual of Summoning does not give a permanent 5 force bonus, Ritual of Summoning permanently SETS the force to 5. Can you explain why Houhou is getting a permanent 7 force bonus from it?
Thanks in advance,
HN
Edited Title for Clarity -Genji
A: Permanently Setting a stat to a value implies that a permanent force bonus or force penalty is given to get to that value.
In the case of a Houhou that has been affected by Asako Serizawa's ability, the permanent force bonus given by Ritual of Summoning is 7. (2-4+7=5).
When Serizawa's force penalty ends, the permanent force bonus remains, putting Houhou at 9 Force. Dan Jacobson, "Ritual of summoning and negative force bonus", 24 Jul 2009 - Q: There is some question over at viewtopic.php?f=244&t=77181 about what happens when you give a personality a negative force bonus then raise their for with ritual of summoning. Some people seem to think that you can give a personality more negative bonus then their force, effectively giving someone -12 force. According to the rule book force can not be lowered past 0 so any force penalty beyond was is required to set the personalities force to 0 would be negated.
Example:
Houhou is given a -4 force penalty with Asako Serizawa and his force now becomes 0 with a -2 force penalty. Asako Serizawa tries to give Houhou another -4 but because his force is currently 0 it has not effect. Houhou casts Ritual of Summoning and permanently gets a +5 force bonus. At the end of turn the -2 force penalty goes away setting his permanent force to 7.
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Maxi ... _penalties: "To get a stat's current value at any given time, do steps A through C, below:
"A: Apply all current bonuses and penalties." Also note section below -- setting a stat to a value is just a bonus or penalty.
"B: If the total is below 0, treat it as 0. (Does not apply to Family Honor, Honor Requirements, and stats with a + or – sign such as an Item’s Force and Chi stats.)
"C: If the total is less than a minimum or more than a maximum, treat it as the minimum or maximum." Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of summoning and negative force bonus", 23 Jul 2009
