Rules Q&A
- Q: Also, I looked through the accumulated rulings for anything concerning the overlay of the experienced Ruby of Iuchiban over the original. I heard it was ruled that when the ruby is overlaid, it can no longer be destroyed.
A: That would not be correct. The destruction clause for the Ruby (nonexperienced) is part of its Ability, and Abilities are carried over to more-experienced versions of cards in an overlay situation. Traits, however, are not. Martin Lund, "Rules for 5 and 6 September 2004", 8 Sep 2004 - Q: Let's say I use the experienced Ruby of Iuchiban's effect on an a personality that is bowed by Imperial Quest. Imperial Quest reads the Personality's controller gains 2 Honor each time he CHOOSES not to straighten the Personality. Does he continue to gain honor as long as he remains bowed? My belief is no, because the controller no longer has the choice of whether or not to straighten him.
A: I agree. There is no longer a choice, and Imperial Quest only works when you make that choice. Martin Lund, "Rules for 22-25 August 2004", 30 Aug 2004 - Q: Is the effect of attaching the Ruby XP (not allowing the personality to straighten) considered an action (because it's an action to play the Ruby) or not (because it's really just an effect of attachment?) Moreover, can I redirect the effect with Shiba Danjuro or cancel it with Balance in Nothingness?
A: Targeting a bowed Personality, other than the one Ruby of Iuchiban is attached to, is an additional cost to play the Ruby.
Keeping the Personality from straightening is an effect of the Ruby's Trait. It has nothing to do with the Action of attaching the Ruby.
You normally couldn't redirect the effect with Danjuro, because he wouldn't be bowed when you announced his ability, thus an illegal target.
You could redirect the targeting to another bowed Personality you control with say, Turn of Fortune.
You could Cancel the action of attaching Ruby of Iuchiban XP. with Balance in Nothingness. The Ruby would be returned to the player's hand (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 72). Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 June 2004", 25 Jun 2004 - Q: Ruby of Iuchiban XP wrote:
You must target a bowed Personality, other than the one Ruby of Iuchiban is attached to, to play or overlay the Ruby.
Is this an entering play effect, or a restriction (For possible interaction with Suitengu's Surge)?
A: Diamond rules, pg. 103: Restriction. Zen Faulkes, "Ruby of Iuchiban XP", 10 Mar 2005
