Rules Q&A
- Q: I looked at viewtopic.php?f=59&t=99986 but couldn't really apply it to my specific case.
My opponent has Ryoshun's Guidance, Shiba and TWO 0-cost followers in play. I play Claw and Shell, first and foremost to kill Shiba (and if possible one of the followers).
Is he able to use Ryoshun's to save Shiba or not?
What I'm thinking -> since C&S targeting isn't mandatory, it will happen in the action's resolution (does this have relevance to the case?). So I pick Shiba as the first target. My opponent reacts with Guidance, changing the target to one of the followers. I then pick Shiba as the second target.
Also, and as a sanity check, if my opponent only had Guidance, Shiba and a single 0-cost follower in play he could never save Shiba, right? I choose to target both, so the Guidance's redirection from Shiba has no remaining legal targets...
A: Your targeting is simultaneous, not sequential. At the targeting step, you would choose Shiba and one follower. Your opponent could then redirect from Shiba to the other follower. While there's a separate reaction window to each target, they're still chosen at the same time.
If it's just Shiba and one follower, Ryoshun's will not save them. Jon Palmer, "Claw and Shell vs. Ryoshun's Guidance", 31 Jul 2013 - Q: I'm looking for clarification on http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95544

Are you able to use a single Shrine to the Heavens to prevent the destruction of multiple celestials (from the appearance of another celestial in your provinces)
e.g. Jurojin's blessing and Ryoshun's Guidance in play, I flip Benten's Blessing while I control 1 Shrine to the Heavens
The previous ruling seems to indicate that I can use the single trigger to activate the Shrine multiple times, but my playgroup is quite opposed to this interpretation, indicating that if multiple celestials flipped in a turn you could protect a celestial each time, ending up with 2 celestials in play.
A: In your example, no.
A single Shrine to the Heavens will trigger only once when Benten's Blessing is revealed. While traits can trigger multiple times per turn, any one instance of a trait will only resolve once per trigger.
You will have to pick one of your Celestials in play, and the other will be discarded when Benten's Blessing enters play. Ben Higgins, "Shrine to the Heavens + Multiple Celestials", 13 Jan 2013 - Q: I know the answer, just need to make sure it's here for reference in case
Situation:
I have Doji Bob and Doji Jim at home. I attempt to Brave New World Doji Bob into a battlefield, and my opponent reacts with Request Authorisation. Can I redirect the target of Request Authorisation using Ryoshun's Guidance to Doji Jim, and have Bob move normally?
Card texts:
Reaction: Before another player's Battle action resolves, target a Personality: Negate his movement to the current battlefield from the action's effects.
Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.
A: That works. Alex Jones, "Request Authorisation + Ryoshun's Guidance", 3 Jan 2013 - Q: My question is, does the Osote trait trigger in this case?
A: No, Osote's trait will not trigger.
You'll note the trigger of Ryoshun's Guidance, "When another player's action would target one of your cards,". The key word in this trigger is When.
According to the rules on Timing and "When" triggers: "2. Effects that alter a player’s choice, such as targeting or assignment, are written as “when (the player) would.” The timing of such a "when... would" effect occurs later than the player indicates his or her initial choice, but earlier than the point at which the targeting (or other outcome of the choice) actually happens."
As such, if your opponent would redirect the action's targeting to a non-Crab Clan Personality, you have not targeted a Crab Clan Personality, so Osote's trait cannot trigger. Ben Higgins, "Ryoshun's Guidance vs. Hida Osote", 23 Aug 2012 - Q: Let's say I have Ryoshun's Guidance out (giving my personalities +1 Chi while not in a duel), a Cursed Relic on one of my personalities, and have used the Ranged Attack action on the Relic a number of times equal to the personality's base Chi (leaving him with only the one Chi from the Guidance). If my personality is challenged to a duel, and loses that one Chi, I'm assuming he dies immediately to Chi-death. But what happens with the duel? Does the action that created the duel still resolve? Will the focus/strike stuff still happen? Is there a winner/loser?
A: Challenges and duels: If a Personality involved in a challenge or duel leaves play during it, the challenge or duel ends immediately without resolution. In particular, Focus Effects that have not yet resolved at that point do not resolve at all.
If a duel ends "without resolution", skip immediately to Step K: Duel Cleanup. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance + Cursed Relic + Duel", 31 Jul 2012 - Q: Just to clarify on Palmer's rule here:http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=98083 , if I had two redirection effects used (i.e. Ryoshun's Guidance and Chugo Seido) Can I use both to have them target a samurai with no attachments? Thanks!
A: No, because each retargeting is an individual effect, and therefore each is individually illegal. Jon Palmer, "Red Hunger And Ryoshun Guidance", 13 Jul 2012 - Q: If the player who controls the Red Hunger attempts to target two attachments, can the player who controls those 2 attachments redirect the action on red hunger to a personality with no attachments (and lower force) using Ryoshun's Guidance?
A: Changes in targeting must obey the legality of the original targeting. Since the retargeting effect will only change one of the two targets, and targeting an attachment and a Personality is not legal under the Red Hunger's ability, such a change is not allowed. Jon Palmer, "Red Hunger And Ryoshun Guidance", 9 Jul 2012 - Q: Any update on this?
I think the answer is no as one attachments is already targeted and Red hunger cannot target an attachment and a personality at the same time.
Also, if I target two attachments and my opponent rediects one of the targets he/she has to choose an attachments that wouldn't exceed the Red Hunger's total force when the new item's force is added to the other attachment's force, correct?
A: You are correct, if a new attachment was chosen, the total cost of the two attachments must still be a legal number per the Red Hunger. Jon Palmer, "Re: Red Hunger and Ryoshun's Guidance", 9 Jul 2012 - Q: This is a seemingly improbable set of events, but given the prevalence of all the cards, I can see it coming up a lot. The example I list is specific, but the consequences apply to dozens, if not hundreds of card combinations.
The breakdown is this. Personality_A targets Personality_B with a simple bow action. Player_B reacts with Ancestral Protection, negating the effects. Player_A reacts with Inexorable, making the effects non-negatable. Player_B NOW reacts with Ryoshun's Guidance, wanting to change the target of the now-non-negatable action.
The question: Does the timing of "When another player's action would," take place before the "after an action targets?"
or
Do both of those steps trigger at the same time, allowing the negation chain followed by redirection?
I apologize if there is already a ruling on this, but there are so many combinations of cards that share these wordings that I couldn't find any in my search.
Ancestral Protection: Reaction: After an action targets your Personality, destroy your performing Ancestor: Negate the action's effects.
Inexorable: Reaction: After another player announces a Reaction during the Combat Segment: Its effects will not negate other effects.
Ryoshun's Guidance Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.
A: "Would target" does in fact take place prior to "after an action targets". Therefore, the redirection window has passed after Inexorable is played. Jon Palmer, "Inexorable followed by Redirection", 26 Jun 2012 - Q: Hi there. Apologies if this has been covered. I can't seem to find the thread.
Power of Strength: Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Personality with 7 or higher base Force and target two enemy Personalities, each with unit Gold Cost lower than your performer's Gold Cost: Bow one of them. Ranged Attack with strength equal to the first target's Force, which may only target the other Personality (if legal).
versus
Ryoshun's Guidance: Reaction: When another players action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.
Chugo Seido: Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your Personalities, destroy this card: Choose one of your Samurai at the same location. The action targets him instead, if legal.
Based on the rules of playing an action and targetting, here is the scenario:
1. I announce Power of Strength in battle 2. I choose my performing unbowed personality 3. I choose two enemy target personalities 4. My opponent announces a reaction (Chugo or Ryoshun) to redirect one of the targets. 5. The redirection resolves and I confirm the two targets as final 6. When resolving Power of Strength, I get to choose which of the two targets is bowed (not my opponent). Is this correct?
Thank you very much for your attention.
A: You are correct, as the choice of which to bow happens after both have been targeted and re-targeted. Jon Palmer, "Power of Strength versus Ryoshun's Guidance/Chugo Seido", 26 May 2012 - Q: In post viewtopic.php?f=59&t=97616 a ruling was made that Ryoshun's Guidance could redirect the Ring of Fire to a personality that doesn't meet its constraints block (at least as far as I can tell). Can your provide more clarification on the sequence of how the two cards play out?
A: 1. You have two Personalities at a battle with 3 and 4 Chi (thanks to the +1C from Ryoshun's Guidance, which is what I believe you missed).
2. Enemy leader announces Ring of Fire, chooses a 3C performer and targets your 3C guy.
3. You React with RG's ability. First comes the cost of discarding it. NOW, your two guys only have 2C and 3C respectively.
4. In resolving its effects, you choose the (now) 3C guy. Ryoshun's last effect changes the targeting to him, if legal, which it now is, thanks to him having lost his Chi bonus. Brook Cunningham, "Ryoshun's Guidance Vs Ring of Fire", 26 Apr 2012 - Q: Player A controls Ryoshun's Guidance in an army with two personalities with chi 3 and 4 (would be 2 and 3 without the guidance). Player B has a chi 3 personality and announces Ring of Fire, targeting the personality with equal chi, since the other wouldn't be a legal target for him. Player A reacts with Ryoshun's Guidance to change the target to the other personality, would that be a legal play since the legality of the target is checked after discarding Ryoshun's Guidance?
A: It's legal, and it works. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance Vs Ring of Fire", 25 Apr 2012 - Q: Kitsuki Yataku reads:
Political Reaction: After an action targets a target Samurai, bow Yataku: The Samurai's controller may not choose to refuse any challenge created by the action.
Wording on Chugo Seido and Ryoshun's Guidance is: "Before another player's action would target...". How do they interact with Yataku, if at all? Can they be used to redirect Yataku's action, or will the redirection just fail? If they can redirect the action to a new target, will it matter, since the controller of the new target will still be my opponent, and thus he will have to accept?
It is my turn, and I announce an action that creates a challenge and I target a Samurai. Since I may take reactions to targeting first, I bow Yataku to force my opponent to accept. Then, my opponent uses his Ryoshun's Guidance to redirect my action to a non-Samurai Personality. Does the non-Samurai Personality have to accept the challenge as well? I believe so, but I would like to be sure.
What happens if it is my opponent's turn? Does he get the first opportunity to react (and redirect via Ryoshun's Guidance to a non-Samurai), and so I lose my opportunity to use Yataku?
A: "Would" is simply used to make the tenses correct. "Before another player's action would target..." will always happen before "after an action targets". Therefore no matter whose turn it is, the Ryoshun's will always trigger first, and if it moves it to a non-samurai Yutaku's reaction may not be taken as there is no longer a valid trigger. Jon Palmer, "Kitsuki Yataku + redirection", 17 Apr 2012 - Q: I didn't ask this question clearly enough:
I'm playing Shadow's Lair and my opponent has Ryoshun's Guidance in play.
He attacks me with 2 4-Force personalities.
I target both with the stronghold.
He attempts to react with Ryoshun's Guidance to put all targeting on one (instead of 2).
Does his redirection off of both to just one work?
A: No.
See Glossary, Targetting: When multiple targets are chosen simultaneously, the same target cannot be chosen twice. This also means that when one target out of multiple, already-chosen targets is being changed, another one of those already-chosen targets cannot legally become the new target. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance + the Shadow's Lair XP", 20 Mar 2012 - Q: If I'm targeting multiple units for the effect on Shadow's Lair, and one of those is redirected using the guidance, can I continue targeting up to the 9F requirement anyway and target that unit again?
A: I'm afraid not.
All your targeting occurs simultaneously for The Shadow's Lair; Required Targeting: "Two or more targets are chosen simultaneously if they are grouped together by a number (such as, “target two Holdings.”)".
So, the player with Ryoshun's Guidance Reacts after you've already stated what ALL of the targets will be, then may react to any of them that he wishes. Brook Cunningham, "Ryoshun's Guidance + the Shadow's Lair", 19 Mar 2012 - Q: Regarding this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=95651
Is the answer:
A) Yes, it is legal to change the target to an enemy card without attachments.
or
B) Yes, the target would have to be another unit.
Given the phrasing of the question, it's not immediately clear which possible answer "Yes" is referring to, and I can't pick the meaning out of the explanation provided.
A: I was answering the main question.
Even if the card chosen with Ryoshun's Guidance's action meets the targeting requirements of A Stain Cleansed in a different way to the initial target, that is still a legal target, and the Ryoshun's Guidance changes the target. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance, adjust targeting", 12 Jan 2012 - Q: Ryoshun's Guidence (Reaction: When another player's action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.) A Stain Cleansed (Battle: Choose your performing unbowed Magistrate, target an enemy card without attachments or an enemy unit, and pay Gold equal to the card or unit's total Gold Cost minus 2: Destroy it. )
My question is when a card may target diffrent types of cards, cards without attachments or unit for example, is it allowable to change from one target sub-type to another?
Example: A player nominates a unit to target with A Stain Cleansed. With Ryoshun's Guidence is it legal to change the target to an enemy card without attachments, or would the target have to be another unit?
A: Yes.
The player of A Stain Cleansed is choosing one target. This can be one of two types, but the choice of target type is specified implicitly, by the choice of target - you do not separately choose the target type. Alex Jones, "Ryoshun's Guidance, adjust targeting", 12 Jan 2012 - Q: A follow up question to: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=94587
Given Palmer's response, does that mean that player B in this scenario could react with Ryoshun's Guidance and change the target of the ranged 5 attack?
Ryoshun's Guidance: Reaction: When another players action would target one of your cards, discard this card: Choose another of your non-Stronghold cards at the same location. The action targets it instead, if legal.
A: For the next month give or take, the answer to your question of Reactions to targeting is "yes, you CAN react to the targeting of Aroru's Ranged Attack".
However, as of EE, Ranged Attack targeting will no longer be required. It will be optional, as required targeting will have wholly moved to constraints but the "Ranged X Attack" shorthand will not have changed, putting its targeting in effects and after Aroru's clause prohibiting Reactions.
I should also note, this change won't affect Palmer's ruling above. Brook Cunningham, "Aroru (exp 2) vs Reinforce the gates", 25 Oct 2011 - Q: For emperor edition...my opponent has two units and attacks me with one of them. My opponent takes a province while I'm defending elsewhere. After my opponent takes a province, at my battlefield I attempt to use determined challenge to harpoon his other person, who has not been in battle resolution. Can my opponent use Ryoshun's Guidance (or any other redirection) to redirect the targeting to the unit that has already been in battle resolution? If so, what happens?
A: Yes, the opponent can redirect, and the "No Second Battle" rule will cause the harpoon movement to fail. 😦 Sad for you. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 30 Nov 2023
