Rules Q&A
- Q: Is Sasada a Naga personality?
A: Ningyo =/= Naga; so, no. Brook Cunningham, "Is Sasada", 9 Sep 2014 - Q: I have a question on the legality of Mantis Detachment's Reaction.
First the text : "Reaction: After this battle resolution at a province that was not destroyed, if this card was in your army during resolution: Permanently give the province -2 strength. Straighten this unit after the Attack Phase ends."
"The rule (in the battles) :
After Resolution
After a battle’s Resolution Segment ends, or after Resolution would end if it is somehow avoided, follow steps A through C in order.
A. Regardless of who wins, loses, or ties in the battle, all surviving attacking and allied units return home, and these units are then bowed by the battle’s resolution if they returned home. "
It seems to me that Mantis Detachment would be bowed by the battle before it has the opportunity of using its reaction. Therefore it seems that Mantis Detachment's Reaction is never legal to use. Does that mean that this card falls under the same ruling as Sasada and therefore can use its Reaction even if bowed, or does that mean that Mantis Detachment is a follower with no action?
A: The procedure at the end of a battle - between the end of the Resolution Segment and the end of the Battle - has been clarified. See Final Steps.
The trigger for Mantis Detachment's Reaction is after the Resolution Segment, before Final Steps. In particular, it is before attacking units return home bowed. Alex Jones, "Mantis Detachment", 29 May 2008 - Q: So under the new SE rules Sasada can't use his ability: "OPEN: Bow one of your ports or region cards: straighten Sasada" to straighten himself.
But, is there anything in the rules that prevent me from using the ability on one of my unbowed Sasadas in play to straighten a different bowed Sasada?
A: Sasada still works like he always did.
The only effect of Sasada's ability is to straighten its own card (not other cards named Sasada). The only time this action can produce any effect that legally resolves is when Sasada is bowed. Ergo, the card's text must override the general rule preventing you from using abilities on bowed cards.
This is one of the (hopefully) rare times where a card invokes Cardinal Rule #1 implicitly rather than explicitly. Martin Lund, "Sasada", 20 Jul 2007 - Q: In the Samurai Edition rules when using Sasada, I assume that only an unbowed Sasada can be used to unbow another Sasada. Is this correct?
Sorry wrote this before noticing no Samurai Posts:(
A: The only embargo right now is on Samurai Edition cards, which Sasada is not.
Comprehensive rules, Wording: "References to the card’s title, or to a shortened form of the title in the case of Personalities, (such as, “Mareshi” as short for “Mirumoto Mareshi”), refer to the card itself." Zen Faulkes, "Sasada", 25 Jun 2007
