Rules Q&A
- Q: Scandalous Rumors- Battle:Bow your performing courtier at any location:The attacker may target any of his Personalities at the current battlefield and move them home. He loses 1 honor for each of his personalities there that this did not move, then dishonors them.
Legion of Pain-Actions performed by Personalities with a Gold Cost of 7 or lower may not target this personality.
In a recent game my friend played Scandalous Rumors on my guy who had Legion of Pain attached. He fulfilled requirements with a low cost courtier, and I couldn't choose to send my guy home because the action cannot target him (even though I choose the target) due to Legion of Pain. Therefore, I lose 1 honor and get dishonored as result of the effects.
Is this right? Seems like Legion of Pain is what stooged me rather than save me :/
A: That is correct.
In the above case, the Legion's usually beneficial trait is detrimental to you. Ben Higgins, "Scandalous Rumors and Legion of Pain", 28 Dec 2012 - Q: Now that you can no longer Sepukku in Battle, are the Honour Losses from Scandalous Rumours considered an honour loss individually, or as a host?
A: The EE change to the Rulebook Seppuku action in no way affected the definition of "for each".
The loss from Scandalous Rumors is still a single loss, and previous rulings as to its interaction with Law of Darkness Dojo still stand. Brook Cunningham, "Scandalous Rumors vs. Law of Darkness Dojo V2", 18 Jul 2012 - Q: If I play Scandalous Rumors, and my opponent "targets" his own character whom he targeted with Consideration, does that trigger Consideration, negating all of the effects of Scandalous Rumors?
A: Yes, that's how it works.
Consideration doesn't care who does the targeting, only that the targeting is by/from "another player's action".
Compare its wording to Armor of the Heavens. THAT one cares that "another player" does the targeting, so would NOT trigger from Scandalous Rumors or Mysterious Deaths.
Both it and Consideration are worded as they are intended to function. Brook Cunningham, "Scandalous Rumors and Consideration", 10 Jun 2012 - Q: Successful Bounty: Until your Events Phase three turns from now begins, after each time a Personality opposing a Magistrate or Courtier becomes dishonorable from an action, the Personality's controller loses 2 Honor.
Scandalous Rumors: Political / Battle: Bow your performing Courtier at any location: The Attacker may target any of his Personalities at the current battlefield and move them home. He loses 1 Honor for each of his Personalities there that this did not move, then dishonors them.
Question: If I have a Courtier or a Magistrate opposing my enemy's units at the current battlefield when Scandalous Rumors is played while Successful Bounty is active, how much honor does my opponent lose (say he keeps 3 units at the battlefield and dishonors each in turn)? I understand the honor loss from Scandalous Rumors is considered a single honor loss, but the wording of Successful Bounty seems to imply that my opponent must lose 2 Honor for each personality affected since it speaks about the "Personality" in the singular tense...
A: That's right.
In your scenario, the other player takes a single loss of 3 Honor from Scandalous Rumors for keeping 3 people at the battlefield.
Then, as they're dishonored, Successful Bounty's effect triggers separately for each of them, dishing out 3 more individual losses of 2 Honor apiece.
Total of the losses: 9 Honor. Ouch! Brook Cunningham, "Successful Bounty & Scandalous Rumors", 4 Jan 2012 - Q: Scenario: I have 5 samurai personalities attacking a province. The defender uses Scandalous Rumors and I choose to target and try to move all my people home. Before the resolution of the action, Cowed by Wisdom is played by the defender. Because of this, I want to reduce the honor loss to 1 via seppuku.
Am I required to seppuku everybody as everybody was the target of the action, or can I seppuku only 1 person?
A: While you COULD seppuku everyone if you wanted, you are not required to do so.
Since Scandalous Rumors only creates one loss, it only takes one seppuku to reduce it to 1. Brook Cunningham, "Scandalous Rumors and Cowed by Wisdom", 12 Sep 2011 - Q: RE: viewtopic.php?p=1244043#p1244043
Scandalous Rumors makes the opponent target their own personalities, does this not count as being targeted for the honor loss?
Wording: Battle: Bow your performing Courtier at any location: The Attacker may target any of his Personalities at the current battlefield and move them home. He loses 1 Honor for each of his Personalities there that this did not move, then dishonors them.
A: Well, the trick is, you would have to target at least one Personality and send him home, then he could seppuku the loss for all the ones that stayed.
But if you leave ALL your Personalities at the battle and lose honor for all of them, which I think is the scenario my colleague was assuming, then you've targeted none of them and there is no one who can seppuku. Brook Cunningham, "Scandalous Rumors and Law of Darkness Dojo", 11 Sep 2011 - Q: It's come to question whether the honor loss from Scandalous Rumors is one large loss or individual losses for each personality.
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Glossary_F#For_each: "Proportional effects using the term “for each”... should be interpreted as a single effect rather than numerous separate effects." (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Scandalous Rumors and Law of Darkness Dojo", 11 Sep 2011 - Q: how would one seppuku that loss? can you?
A: No, you cannot, as the personalities causing the honor loss were not targeted, which is a requirement for the player ability. Zen Faulkes, "Scandalous Rumors and Law of Darkness Dojo", 11 Sep 2011 - Q: And the big question is if they are individual losses does Law of Darkness Dojo increase each loss by one.
A: Moot. Zen Faulkes, "Scandalous Rumors and Law of Darkness Dojo", 11 Sep 2011
