- Will only attach to a Shugenja.
Reaction: Any number of times per turn, before any player's Spell is destroyed, once per copy of a Spell per game, if this Shugenja is unbowed, bow this card and pay the Spell's Gold cost: Transfer that Spell to this Shugenja instead of destroying it; any cost of destroying the Spell is still considered paid. - Focus Value

Rulings
- Erratum: Reads, "Scribe +1F/+1C 0HR 7G -PH 2FV Scribe can only be attached to a Shugenja. Reaction: Bow Scribe and pay the gold cost of any spell as it is being destroyed to attach that spell to the Scribe's unbowed Shugenja rather than destroying it. This may only be done once per spell per Scribe." [MRP, Obsidian Edition] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 46
- Can save spells that are being destroyed in any way, not just by being cast. [DW, 27 August 1996] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 46
- Cost to re-attach a spell with the Scribe is affected by everything that would affect the cost of attaching it from your hand. [Summary of other rulings] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 47
- The cost of destroying the spell is still considered to be paid. [JA, 9 April 2002] Rules Archive, August 18, 2007, p. 47
- Cannot save a spell if his own shugenja is bowed, since you can't attach cards to bowed Personalities. [rulebook, and DW, l5rinfo, 1/3/97] Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 52
- This means the Scribe usually can't save his own shugenja's spells. Accumulated Rulings, February 8, 2000, p. 52
- Clarified: each Scribe can save each spell once. Text Change & Errata List, February 15, 2000, p. 10
Rules Q&A
- Q: Does Asako Bairei EXP 3 bow to use his ability?
Relevant text: Asako Bairei
Phoenix Clan*Elemental Master*Sugenja*Water*Scribe*Cavalry*Experienced 3*Unique
Your water sugenja need not bow as a cost to perform water actions
Water Battle: Even if he is not at the current battlefield, bow Bairei: Straighten up to 4 target bowed cards.
From the special GenCon announcements on the L5R website:
A reference to a “(Keyword) Spell,” a “(Keyword) card,” or a “(Keyword) Action card” can also refer to a Spell or Action card with an ability that has that keyword.
While Bairei is obviously a water sugenja with a water action, he is not a Spell or Action card.
Does he bow?
A: This Asako Bairei - Experienced 3 card of which you speak - it wouldn't happen to be a Preview Card, would it?
We don't do rules questions on Preview Cards so early around these parts. Martin Lund, "Asako Bairei EXP 3", 23 Aug 2007
