Rules Q&A
- Q: I played a Peaceful Interlude, and later in the Attack Phase I destroy a province. I trigger the conditional indefinite effect and try to target a personality of the other player. Can he react with Misdirection / Seat of Power to choose or change the target of the effect?
A: Seat of Power, yes (assuming a Champion or Daimyo is involved). Peaceful Interlude is an action, and it's targeting, which is the trigger for Seat of Power.
Misdirection, no. http://rules.l5r.com/Rulings_M#Misdirection: "The timing point of Misdirection's action trigger is: during the other player's action's Required Targeting Step, in between the last required targeting in the constraints block (if any) and the first required targeting in the effects block (if any)." It cannot respond to delayed targeting.
(Fixed.) Zen Faulkes, "Peaceful Interlude", 26 Oct 2008 - Q: In response to: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=69488
Wouldn't you be able to redirect the initial targeting before the dishonorable targets are chosen? As they are chosen in order listed on the card.
A: See Required targeting.
The targets "one of your Personalities" and "a Personality opposing him with lower Chi" are required targets, so they are chosen during the Required Targeting step of the action. However, the targets "any number of dishonorable Personalities in the current enemy army" are optional, since Insolence Punished says, "You may target", so they are chosen during the Action Resolves step. This difference in the timing is because of the wording, not because of the order of the sentences.
In the example as given, the required targeting can't be changed, since only Saya and Haruko are targeted, and Seat of Power doesn't react to either target. The optional targeting can't be changed either, since the valid potential targets are Kuon and Daizu (they are the only "dishonourable Personalities in the current enemy army") and the Scorpion player has targeted both. Any attempt to shift the targeting of Kuon onto Daizu would require Daizu to be double targeted by the same targeting instance, and that - as is made very clear by the various links pointed out by Zen - is not permitted. Alex Jones, "Seat of Power vs. Insolence Punished", 21 Jul 2008 - Q: Does such a thing as simultaneous targeting exist?
A: Yes. http://rules.l5r.com/Abilities_and_acti ... _targeting: "All targets are designated in the order described, including simultaneously if a number of targets are indicated by a number (such as, “target two Holdings.”)" (Emphasis added.) Zen Faulkes, "Simultaneous targeting? and Seat of Power", 1 Jul 2008 - Q: I play Hired Killer targeting an opponent's Champion. I react to the Hired Killer with a Determination, and react to the Determination with a Determination. My opponent reacts with Seat of Power(.)
A: The first player is getting in all the Determinations before the second. I agree that there is a little vagueness in "play Hired Killer", which, as I previously said, I took to be an informal description of the process. Zen Faulkes, "Multiple Determinations", 11 Mar 2008 - Q: Regarding this : viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66277
Well, the play described in the OP post is not correct, as you play determination BEFORE you announce an action (card text) so the sequence of play should be :
Player A : Determination, Announce Determination and play it (This Determination can now can't have it's effect negated or it's target changed), Announce Hired Killer (this Hired Killer can't have it's effect negated nor it's targeting changed, then the personality it kills will be removed from the Game). Player B : Determination, Announce Seat of Power (can't have it's effect negated, not it's targeting changed). This effect bypass the last determination of player A, and effectiveley Player B can change the target of Hired Killer.
Is this reasoning incorrect, and why?
A: I interpreted "I play Hired Killer and react with Determination" as an informal description of the process.
I believe the summary above describes the first question, but not the second, which added another Determination to the mix. Zen Faulkes, "Multiple Determinations", 10 Mar 2008 - Q: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=66277
I play Hired Killer targeting an opponent's Champion. I react to the Hired Killer with a Determination, and react to the Determination with a Determination. My opponent reacts with Seat of Power, reacting with Determination. Is the Hired Killer redirected? If my opponent reacted to his Determination with another Determination, would it be redirected?
Thanks!
A: He who plays the most Determinations wins (effects are not negated).
If both players have equal numbers of Determination, last one played wins (effects are not negated). Zen Faulkes, "Multiple Determinations", 10 Mar 2008 - Q: Just wondering 2 things...
1) If I use HoA to give one of my Samurai the Keyword "Shugenja", and attach a Spell to him, what happens to him/the spell when the effect ends?
2) If I put Unique on Kitsu Katsuko, making her into a Unique Daimyo for the Seat of Power, what happens since it, again, ends at the end if the turn?
HoA = Hall of the Ancestors
Sorry about that. Thought it was the only card that allowed you to copy Keywords. >.>
A: HoA?
Hallmark or Anchovies?
Heroes of Alberta?
Herd of Aardvarks?
Heap of Ancillaries?
Hearltess old Alderac?
Mod reminder: Please use complete card titles (and Experience levels if a a card has one) when asking questions. Thanks! Zen Faulkes, "Question about HoA", 4 Mar 2008 - Q: For example:
i have personality with 2 personal honor and performing shuten doji's fury against 2 pesonalities w/o attachments:
How misdirection works here? I targeted the 2 personalities A and B, if my opponent use misdirection from A to B, is it Legal?
A: Read the most recent printing of Misdirection again.
"Political Gozoku Reaction: Before another player would choose targets for one of his action’s effects during a battle, target one of your Courtier or Gozoku Personalities: You choose the targets instead."
You never got to target anything. The player playing Misdirection made all the targeting decisions, not you. He could choose just one target even if you wanted to target 2 or 3 cards. Martin Lund, "Shuten Doji's Fury vs. Misdirection/Seat of Power", 17 Jan 2008 - Q: If I bring (Tsuruchi Etsui Experienced) into play and target one of the opposing player's Clan Champion can he redirect it with Seat of Power if there is another legal target?
A: Not an action. No. Zen Faulkes, "Tsuruchi Etsui vs. Seat of Power", 13 Dec 2007 - Q: If my opponent has two Personalities at the current battlefield, one of them being a Clan Champion, and I target both of them with Strike of the Dragon, can my opponent use Seat of Power to keep the Clan Chamption from being targetd?
A: No, because the card does not get to change the number of targets, and there is no other Personality to be targeted "instead."
http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_I-J#Instead: "In effects that substitute targeting, if the new target has to be a "legal" target, then failure to find a new legal target -- one that satisfies the requirements of the original targeting plus any additional requirements on targeting from other sources -- means the original targeting happens normally." Zen Faulkes, "Seat of Power + Strike of the Dragon", 5 Dec 2007 - Q: Seat of Power´s reaction reads: "Reaction: When an action would target one of your Unique Clan Champion or Daimyo Personalities: The action instead targets another of your legal Personalities with the same Clan alignment at his location."
When an action (for example Shiba Aikune XP 3: "Battle: Any number of times per turn, destroy a Personality in Aikune's army: Destroy two target cards opposing Aikune with no attachments.") targets two unique Clan Champions / unique Daimyo personalities, can this trigger the reaction on Seat of Power?
A: Certainly. Heck, it provides two triggers for the ability. Of course, you can only use the ability once per turn, so choose wisely. Martin Lund, "Seat of Power / Multiple Targets", 2 Nov 2007 - Q: regarding this ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=62130
Kan'ok'tichek xp3 from Truest Test has the following bold face keywords: Ratling • Nonhuman • Clan Champion • One Tribe • Tomorrow Chieftain • Bushi • Experienced 3 • Unique
Seat of power says the following: Reaction: When an action would target one of your Unique Clan Champion or Daimyo Personalities: The action instead targets another of your legal Personalities with the same Clan alignment at his location.
Unless I'm terribly misinterpreting something here, is Kan'ok'tichek xp3 not a Unique Clan Champion as per his own bold face traits?
A: He is a Unique Clan Champion, but he does not have a Clan Alignment, and thus nothing can 'share' a Clan Alignment with him. Chris Fuchs, "Re: Seat of Power & Ratling", 28 Sep 2007 - Q: Regarding this and this:
Does that mean that Seat of Power won't work on the Ratling Champion?
A: Not without giving him a clan alignment somehow. Chris Fuchs, "Seat of Power and Ratling", 28 Sep 2007 - Q: Hi!
Regarding this:
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=61970
Could you please clarify? To whose action are you pertaining? To the Seat of Power or (let's say the action whose target being changed is) Hired Killer?
Isn't the action (if the target is being changed) on the control of the one taking the action? That is;
A) I Hired Killer Hida Kuon B) Player B plays Seat of Power and activates the redirection C) (Please clarify if this is correct) Since I'm the one originally playing Hired Killer, and Seat of Power states that I'll have to choose another target, this just means that I can choose any personality with the exception of Hida Kuon?
Thanks!
A: The person taking the action on seat of power chooses the new target. Chris Fuchs, "RE: Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: Seat of Power: Who chooses the targets?
A: Actions are read from the controller's point of view. It's your action. You pick. Zen Faulkes, "Seat of Power", 24 Sep 2007 - Q: Is it legal to use Misdirection's reaction to choose the "legal Personality with the same Clan alignment" targeted by Seat of Power's redirection ability, provided I control a courtier or Gozoku personality and the targeting action is happening during a battle?
A: No.
Allen targets Champion with Block Supply Lines.
Bob plays Seat of Power. Seat of Power does not target; it specifically says the targeting is coming from the original action. Seat of Power allows Bob to select the target for Block Supply Lines, but targeting is for Block Supply Lines, which is still Allen's action.
Thus, Bob is not targeting "for one of his action's effects", which is needed for Misdirection. Zen Faulkes, "Misdirection vs. Seat of Power", 17 Aug 2007 - Q: Seat of Power reads that you can target a Unique Daimyo or Clan Champion. I can't find any cards with the word Daimyo, can some please let me know what Daimyo is.
Thanks.
A: It's just a keyword. You'll see cards with it eventually. Zen Faulkes, "What is a Daimyo", 2 Aug 2007
