Rules Q&A
- Q: If I pay for a samurai using 2 Secluded Outposts, can I combine those effects to attach an item or follower costing 8 or less gold for free? I.e. I pay for Bayushi Motomu with 2 Secluded Outposts, can I then slap the clan sword on him without cost?
A: No. Secluded outpost says, "If this pays for a Samurai or Bushi Personality, you may attach an Item or Follower to him from your hand after he enters play, for 4 Gold less. You must pay all remaining costs."
That's an individual effect. You either use it, or you don't, all or nothing. There is no option to combine them. If you use two Secluded Outposts to buy a Samurai or Bushi, you may attach 0-2 Items / Followers at 4 Gold less each. You may not choose to attach 1 Item / Follower at 8 Gold less. Martin Lund, "Rules for 12 May 2004", 15 May 2004 - Q: 1) Can the cost discount of Secluded Outpost be combined if you use multiple ones to buy a Samurai or Bushi?
A: No, they are both separate effects. You either use that one effect to attach a follower at reduced cost, or you don't use it at all. Martin Lund, "Rules for 6 May 2004", 9 May 2004 - Q: If I have 2 Secl. Outposts that I use to pay for a Samurai and then after bringing said samurai into play, attach the Emerald Armor, can I then bring in a 7G Follower for free?
A: [MARTY] Those two Secluded Outposts effects aren't conflicting, so they don't have to be ordered. They both happen simultaneously after the Personality enters play.
You may attach zero, one, or two items / followers at the same time. Your follower and Emerald Armor will attach at the exact same time, so the Emerald Armor won't be in play in time to lower the cost of the follower. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 May 2004", 6 May 2004 - Q: Minimums are "hard" minimums, so it doesn't matte what order you do the reactions in, the follower will still cost one.
A: [MARTY] That isn't quite accurate.
If you have a continuous effect that gives the Stat of the Card in question a minimum, then it will apply at the end of all the calculations of reductions and increases if the number is below the minimum.
For this, you're looking for an effect like "All your X have a minimum [STAT] of Y."
A good example would be Ki-Rin's Shrine nonexperienced:
"While Ki-Rin's Shrine is in play, the Chi of your Personalities cannot be lowered below their Personal Honor, unless ..."
If you have an effect that reduces the Cost of the follower in question to a minimum, the minimum applies only to the application of that effect. Effects applied later can still force the number lower.
For this, you're looking for an effect like "Reduce the targets [STAT] by X, to a minimum of Y."
A good example would be Doom of Fu Leng:
"Bow this Shugenja and any number of your other Shugenja to permanently lower a target Personality's Chi by the number of Shugenja in this Ritual, to a minimum of 1."
The Ki-Rin's Shrine nonexperienced is a "Hard Minimum" while the Doom of Fu Leng is a self-contained minimum. You could follow up to Doom of Fu Leng with Written in Blood and reduce the Personality's chi to 0. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 May 2004", 6 May 2004 - Q: with the errata for priestly feud viewtopic.php?f=59&t=110904
if an cost/effect bows the losing personality, i am assuming that 'must' will not trump the requirement for the personality to be assigned as unbowed - right?
as a follow-up to this thread for overpaying viewtopic.php?f=59&t=111032
Costs If there is a star (*) in the icon, it means that the player can choose to pay any amount of Gold, and the effect scales to the amount paid.
Recruit Repeatable Dynasty, (*): Bring into play...
given these, would i be able to bow Secluded Outpost to produce 0g when i declare to recruit a 0g personality? if yes, can i then interrupt to equip an attachment netting a reduction of 4g plus the 4g change i have from recruiting?
cheers!
A: You may not assign a bowed Personality who "must assign", unless some effect allows you to assign him while bowed.
If you bow the Secluded Outpost to produce gold, but none of its gold is spent on the Recruit action, it did not "bow to produce Gold to Recruit a Personality," so you may not use its Interrupt. Alex Jones, "clarification inquiry - priestly feud & secluded outpost", 28 Jan 2015 - Q: Hi I have a secluded outpost in play (and other gold) I buy Suzune, the Coy paying 5g (using the outpost) to buy Suzune with the Invest cost to Recruit Suzune and create the Scout personality
Can I use the Outposts attach to the created Scout Personality or does it have to be Suzune?
Many thanks!
Secluded Outpost Tireless Interrupt, : If this Holding bowed to produce Gold to Recruit a Personality, Equip an attachment to him from your hand for 4 less Gold after he enters play.
Suzune, the Coy Invest : Create a 3F/2C/1PH Ronin • Samurai • Scout • Yojimbo • Resilient Personality (Once per game per card, a Resilient card does not die in battle resolution).
A: The Scout Personality is created by Suzune's Invest trait, not by the action that's Recruiting her; the Secluded Outpost is producing gold to Recruit Suzune, not the Scout. So, you may only use Secluded Outpost to Equip something to Suzune. Alex Jones, "Secluded Outpost and Suzune, the Coy", 3 Nov 2014 - Q: Can I use the Secluded Outpost's tireless Interrupt to attach something for four gold less then bow more gold producing holdings to buy something that costs 5 gold or more?
A: Yes, you certainly may. Jon Palmer, "Secluded Outpost question", 24 Sep 2014 - Q: Regarding this: http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=107061
How?
Since bowing the holding for gold isn't an action, how can you interrupt it?
Also, from here http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=106202&p=1400386&hilit=secluded+outpost#p1400386
Which indicates that Secluded Outpost is interrupting the Recruitment.
Or am I missing a nuance here?
A: No, you're right. I left out a few words in that sentence - it Interrupts the Recruit action, but it must be the Recruit action during which you bowed it. I'll update the original answer. Jon Palmer, "Secluded Outpost Continued", 5 Mar 2014 - Q: i'm using the sinister citadel and i have a secluded outpost along with some other random holdings in play let's say 2 marshes. i bow secluded outpost and 1 marsh to produce 7 gold to buy a 5 gold dude. i bring mr 5 gold into play then i use my dynasty action on my stronghold to flip the newly face-down province face up to reveal a different 5 gold dude. i bow my other marsh to add 3 gold to my lingering 2 gold to pay for the new 5 gold dude and bring him into play. can i now use my interrupt on the secluded outpost to give an attachment to either of these personalities since i used secluded outpost to produce gold that could have potentially been used to pay for both dudes? or can i only use that interrupt immediately after bringing 1 of them into play? as in if i opt not to attach to the first dude i can only then attach to the second dude?
A: Secluded Outpost actually interrupts the Recruit action, but it needs to be the one during which it bowed. So it only affects the first Personality in your scenario. Jon Palmer, "The Sinister Citadel of the Spider & Secluded Outpost", 5 Mar 2014 - Q: Having a bit of an argument that needs settling.
The situation is I used the Reserve Battle Action to bring Tsuruchi Gosho into play, paying with Secluded Outpost, and attached a Expert Archers to him. I also use Gosho's interrupt to create a Range 3.
My view of the situation is that the Gosho's interrupt creates a delayed effect that creates a whole other action (Announce, Pay costs, interrupt, resolve) so I can interrupt the Range 3 to combine the Range 3 from my follower.
The opposing view is that the Range 3 is just an interrupt, not another action. There is no window to interrupt an interrupt so it is impossible to use the combine interrupt or any interrupt(like turtle shell) against Gosho's Range 3.
Is one of us right or is there some third explanation for how Gosho's interrupt resolves?
A: The second explanation is correct. You cannot Interrupt an Interrupt (advanced rules, page 11); therefore, there is no window to Interrupt Gosho's action - preventing Turtle's Shell, Unholy Strike, and combining Ranged Attacks. Jon Palmer, "Secluded Outpost and Tsuruchi Gosho", 19 Feb 2014 - Q: Secluded Outpost: Bow: Produce 4 Gold. Tireless Interrupt, : If this Holding bowed to produce Gold to Recruit a Personality, Equip an attachment to him from your hand for 4 less Gold after he enters play.
is targeted with The Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion: Tireless Open: Name a Fate card, or name a Dynasty card in play. Negate the effects of the next action from a card with that title.
Here the scenario, Scorpion targets my Secluded. I bow secluded to produce gold while buying a personality but produce zero gold because the effect is negated. Now the wording on Secluded says if the holding bowed to produce gold, it doesn't say bowed AND produced gold. I was most definitely bowing it to produce gold I just failed to do so. Could I then react with Secluded's second ability?
A: The gold production of Secluded Outpost is not an action. Shadowed Estate of the Scorpion could stop the Interrupt, but will not stop the Bow: Produce 4 gold. Jon Palmer, "Another Secluded Outpost Question!", 18 Feb 2014 - Q: Does this mean that this ruling was also (partially) incorrect?
A: No. Brook Cunningham, "Secluded Outpost vs Fortress of the Forgotten", 11 Aug 2010 - Q: Now that TPW is out, can this question be answered?
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=83329&p=1093458&hilit=overpay#p1093458
A: No, for two reasons.
Firstly, the whole combo can't work: the Jade Hand's reaction triggers "Before an action's resolution", whereas - as you point out - you'd need to "react after the resolution to keep the berserker".
Secondly, if you take an option to ignore a cost, you cannot then attempt to pay that non-existent cost. I'm extending the following paragraph in Costs and restrictions, Gold production a little, but it's a consistent interpretation: It is permitted to overpay a Gold cost by any amount, including producing Gold to overpay a Gold cost of zero on (for example) a Strategy card. It is not permitted to pay Gold to bring into play a card with no Gold cost stat (such as a Ring or Region) ... Alex Jones, "Fortress of the Forgotten + Secluded Outpost + Hand OT Jade", 30 Jul 2010 - Q: Also, sorry for making TPW rules questions before it's even close to launch. I <3 my rules junta.
A: We <3 you too. But sometimes, it has to be a tough love.
Please read all the stickies in the Rules forum, especially this one. Brook Cunningham, "Fortress of the Forgotten + Secluded Outpost + Hand OT Jade", 4 May 2010 - Q: Hello,
During my Dynasty Phase I play Mirumoto Eikaru from one of my provinces and I use Secluded Outpost to pay for him. Eikaru's trait enables me to draw a card, which turns out to be a follower. The questions: May I attach that new follower using Secluded Outpost's trait (I mean wording "after he enters play" on the Outpost), or not? Which card's trait should be resolved first?
Mirumoto Eikaru: After Eikaru enters play from one of your provinces: Draw a card.
Secluded Outpost: Bow this card: Produce 4 Gold. If you are paying for a Personality, you may attach an attachment to him from your hand after he enters play, paying 4 less Gold.
Many thanks.
A: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Timing#Resolvin ... _conflicts: "B. Anything that is triggered at this point but is not a Reaction happens now. ... If more than one of these things conflict, the active player decides the order in which they happen." Zen Faulkes, "Mirumoto Eikaru and Secluded Outpost", 13 Mar 2010 - Q: Did a search on this, didnt find anything. So figured I'd ask. If you use Secluded Outpost to buy a personality, then equip a follower via its trait...Could you then react with Kyuden Hida's reaction? I am sort of confused.
IF you purchase a follower via its trait (whether you use Kyuden Hida's reaction or not)can you then pay any remaining cost with Imperial Artificer, to draw a card/discard a card?
If both answers are yes......is the following sequence of play the correct one?
Purchase personality. Personality comes in play
Pay for followers gold cost
Draw a card via Imperial Artificer
Discard a card via imperial artificer
draw a card via Kyuden Hida
A: You may not draw a card via Kyuden Hida's Reaction if you attach a follower via Secluded Outpost's trait, as it is not an action that attaches the follower but a trait. If you pay for the attachment with addition gold from the Imperial Artificer, then you may draw, then discard a card per the holding's text. Dan Jacobson, "Kyuden Hida and Secluded Outpost", 18 Sep 2009 - Q: Can these two be used in conjuction with one another? (Can you pay 4 less for an attachment, attach it, and draw a card?)
A: No.
You're using two separate effects to attach the attachment. Each instance of attaching is resolved completely before the next begins. Alex Jones, "Three Man Alliance Plain + Secluded Outpost", 21 Aug 2009 - Q: Back in Samurai...
A: Stop.
Not in Samurai Edition any more.
In particular, the text of Will changed in Celestial Edition. Will no longer has a gold cost as it did in Samurai Edition. Zen Faulkes, "Will + Secluded Outpost", 22 Jul 2009 - Q: Just a quick follow-up to here to make sure I'm clear on how Secluded Outpost works. If I were to use Secluded Outpost to pay for Houhou's ability, I wouldn't be allowed to attach a spell or follower right away, since I'm paying for an action, and not a personality, correct?
A: Houhou says, Limited: If Houhou is honorably dead: She rises from the ashes. Bring her into play, paying 4 less Gold. [etc]
To bring Houhou into play by any method, you must pay her gold cost. If you use her ability, her gold cost is reduced by 4, but you're still paying for her, not for the action that brings her into play. This means that you use a Secluded Outpost to pay for her, you can indeed attach a card using the Secluded Outpost. Alex Jones, "Will + Secluded Outpost", 21 Jul 2009 - Q: If I use Secluded Outpost to pay for a personality being brought into play by Will, does the Outpost trigger and allow me to play a follower on the character for 4 less gold?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Will + Secluded Outpost", 18 Jul 2009 - Q: Is it... acceptable... to use a samurai edition secluded outpost as a celestial edition secluded outpost in a tournament?
A: The card plays according to Celestial Edition text. Otherwise fine. Zen Faulkes, "Secluded Outpost", 17 Jul 2009
