Rules Q&A
- Q: Can you take control of Clan Champions via cards like Yajinden or Seppun Jin? Why or why not?
A: The "Clan Champion" trait has no impact on who can or can not control a Personality.
Most of the the Diamond Edition Clan Champions, however, have a trait that says, "Will only join an X player." If your question is whether you can ignore those traits when playing a "steal control" effect, the answer is "not unless the ability says it overrides such effects."
Yajinden does not override. Seppun Jin does. Seppun Jin says, "without cost and ignoring all restrictions," while Yajinden does not. Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 January 2005", 24 Jan 2005 - Q: (EG, can I dig up my opponent's Iuchiban with my Seppun Jin? This came up last night. I had Uncertainty/Kolated him first..)
A: Seppun Jin's ability does not produce a Spell Effect. It is neither a Spell nor Kiho Action. Under the Diamond Edition Rules, only these two kinds of Actions produce Spell Effects. Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 September 2004", 23 Sep 2004 - Q: I discaard a focus 5 to gain a person with chi 5, but this chi is bigger than seppun's chi. Can i gain that person???? or the chi must be like seppun's chi and card's focus????
A: OK, the ability reads like this, "This cannot target a Personality whose Chi is greater than Jin's or greater than the discard's Focus value."
This means that if either A.) "Chi is greater than Jin's" OR B.) "Chi is great than the discard's Focus value," then you can not target that Personality.
If either of those two conditions are met, you CAN NOT use Jin's ability on the given Personality, as per the card text. In an OR construction in Math, English, or Computer Science, the evaluation is considered "true" if one or more of the options connected by OR are "true." Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 July 2004", 5 Aug 2004 - Q: This has probably already been asked, but I can't find the answer. If I have a Unique in play, can I use Seppun Jin:
to bring a copy of that same Unique into play *ignoring restrictions*?
A: I don't see anything on the books forbidding it. The card says, "ignoring all restrictions," without any special exemptions for the Unique trait. Until Jeff decides otherwise, you can use Jin to bring into play dead Unique Personalities that you already control a copy of. Martin Lund, "Rules for 14 June 2004", 16 Jun 2004 - Q: If I bring a Personality into play outside of my Dinasty phase(For Example Seppun Jin) do I get honour?
A: No.
"Honor can only be gained for hiring Personalities during the Dynasty Phase." (Accumulated Rulings, "Entering Play") Martin Lund, "Rules for 26 May 2004", 29 May 2004 - Q: What if i play writtne in Blood on a Champion or another 6 chi personlity Kolat Assiasin that personlity and then try to use Seppun Jin to retrive them from that players dead pile? Is his chi 4 still or does it go back to six?
A: Written in Blood does not specify a duration, so its effects last until the end of the turn. Dying does NOT normally end any effects currently applying to a card in L5R, so the dead Personality is still 4C for the rest of the turn no matter where it is. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 20 Feb. 2004", 21 Feb 2004 - Q: Seppun Jin ignores entering play restrictions. Does this include uniqueness?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 November 2003", 16 Nov 2003 - Q: Do you have to satisfy both conditions to bring somebody back form death with Seppun Jin?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 15 November 2003, Part 2", 16 Nov 2003
