Rules Q&A
- Q: (I)f I focused 2 cards with Kado in a duel, and one of them was a Shadow's Talon, which put a third card in my focus pool, would Kado then gain an additional +1F/+1C?
A: No.
The glossary definition is correct, but the glossary definition shouldn't be read in isolation from the rest of the rules, namely the rules for challenges and duels, which spell out in considerably more detail what focusing means. Focusing is a process allowed by the rulebook, not anything that accomplishes some end result.
Will try to clarify the glossary entry Real Soon Now(TM). Zen Faulkes, "Kakita Kado + Shadow's Talon", 16 Jun 2010 - Q: Hi,
This question came up during a game and really I would please just like clarity.
What happens if you focus a Shadow's Talon and then from the focus effect, draw into a second Shadow's Talon and add it to your focus pool? Do you then resolve the focus effect on the second Shadow's Talon card before Duel resolution? If so, can this card resolve a third time if you get lucky and draw into it?
Found this in comprehensive rules, which seems to imply that it does indeed work a second time, however the way this is worded actually adds an element of doubt...
E: Focus Effects resolve: All Focus Effect traits on focused cards resolve, triggered by the game occurrence “Focus Effects resolve.” Multiple Focus Effects resolve in an order chosen by the active player. Focus Effects only resolve if the card is in the focusing area at the time it is chosen to resolve. If a new card enters the focusing area, its Focus Effect must resolve before proceeding to step F.
Shadow's Talon: Focus Effect: Look at the top 3 cards of your Fate deck. Discard one of them and add one of them to your focused cards. Draw a card.
Thankyou very much for your time.
A: As you point out, "If a new card enters the focusing area, its Focus Effect must resolve before proceeding to step F."
Shadow's Talon adds a new card your focused cards, so its Focus Effect must resolve before proceeding. Alex Jones, "Shadow's Talon and focus pool", 7 Jun 2010
