Rules Q&A
- Q: Do paragons our of Shamate Keep keep their personal honor (ph) when they are dishonored? Ie Akodo Kobi is dishonored, is her ph a 0 or 3?
I've been told that the paragons have their personal honor reduce to 0 but that it could be raised thru Honor of the Lion. I think that is wrong as the rules simply state that dishonorable people have a max ph of 0 which would automatically reduce the ph to 0 because of the way stats are calculated and Shamate Keep overrides the max ph rule. There is noting in the rulebook that states that dishonorable people have their ph reduced to 0.
A: Per the rules on calculating stats, normally you would first add up all bonuses and penalties to the Personality's Personal Honor, then apply the rulebook's "Dishonorable Personalities have a maximum Personal Honor of 0" clause. Shamate Keep directly prevents that clause from being applied, and therefore if another effect is giving the Personality a bonus or penalty to Personal Honor, that will be taken into effect in calculating the Personality's Personal Honor.
If Kobi is dishonored, her Personal Honor is 3. If you play Honor of the Lion on her, it will be 4 (base 3 plus a bonus of 1), and with the "maximum 0" clause not applying, remain at 4. Jon Palmer, "Shamate Keep and dishonorable", 23 Jun 2012 - Q: I saw a question about Shamate Keep, and so assume Before the Dawn questions can be asked. So here we go:
1) Is seppuku Performed?
If yes, then can we update the rule's wiki to take that into account?
If No, then how does The Price of Honor work?
The Price of Honor Card Text: Political Limited: Choose your performing Courtier and target another player's dishonorable Personality: He is asked to make a sacrifice. The player may show you his hand. If he does, you may discard a card from it. If he does not choose this, the Personality may not perform the rulebook seppuku action.
A: Techical errata has been issued to The Price of Honor: Limited: Choose your performing Courtier and target another player’s dishonorable Personality: He is asked to make a sacrifice. The player may show you his hand. If he does, you may discard a card from it. If he does not choose this, his Personality will not be affected by the rulebook seppuku action. Alex Jones, "The Price of Honor", 12 May 2011 - Q: Dishonor applies a maximum of 0 to PH, this maximum is removed from your Paragons with Shamate Keep, therefore with Broken Sword of the Lion on the board, your Lion Paragons gain its Force and Chi bonus equal to their current PH regardless of if they're dishonorable or not Assuming it's just these 2 cards involved, that bonus is equal to base PH, anything that would affect PH would affect that bonus as well
A: Whether that bonus is their base or not depends on any other potential modifications, because the bonus is equal to current, but the maximum of 0 from dishonor is not part of the equation thanks to the Stronghold trait. Ah; Marcus wrote the second part of his post above simultaneously with mine, which says the same thing. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 11 May 2025 - Q: [EE] What does the personal honor ability of Shamate Keep mean exactly?
Your dishonorable Paragons do not have a maximum Personal Honor of 0 from the rulebook.
Meaning I have just to ignore that rule from the rulebook? So they keep their personal honor intact? Since I haven't played yet I don't know what this means in practice but I guess having low personal honor makes you a walking target? [EE] Can Hasty Fortifications be bowed for the Carpenter Castle ability?
A: Pretty succinctly, yes. They can still be found by things that target/look for "dishonorable" Personalities, but if you have things in your deck that rely on having high PH, you don't lose out on those.
Yes. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 11 Apr 2025
