Rules Q&A
- Q: Referring to this ruling previously.
viewtopic.php?f=59&t=85455&p=1127316
So, as per the Emperor Edition text,
Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield, target a Personality: Negate all current and new Force bonuses and penalties on him from actions.
Does this mean that Shameful Injury shuts down permanent force bonus? Such as Arrival of Obsidian Champion and RItual of Summoning?
A: The previous wording on Shameful Injury dates from a time when the negation rules were slightly different. Under the current rules, the old and new wordings are equivalent, but the new wording is much shorter.
Shameful Injury suppresses existing permanent force bonuses (from actions) until the end of the turn. Alex Jones, "Shameful Injury (EE) + Permanent Force Bonus", 30 Apr 2012 - Q: If my personality has a weapon, and some one use shameful injury on me, does that negate my bonuses from weapons untill the end of the turn?
A: Shameful Injury negates force bonuses (and penalties) from actions. It does not negate the force bonus from a weapon, since weapons are not actions. Alex Jones, "Shameful Injury", 23 Apr 2012 - Q: Is it legal to play Shadow Plays on Blowdarts for the force pump, making the force bonus immune to Shameful Injury? If so, is it also legal to use Takaharu's reaction to redirect an action that would target blowdarts, if the new target would be a legal choice?
A: Yes and yes.
There is no rule that limits "Ninja" to a particular card type. Zen Faulkes, "Shadow Plays - Takaharu - Keyword Interaction", 13 Apr 2011 - Q: Following http://www.alderac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=88018
Do negation effects negate all new bonuses/penalties by default now too? Meaning that the second sentence on Shameful Injury would no longer be necessary under the new negation rules?
A: No. You'll notice that Shameful Injury's first sentence specifically negates current bonuses. Even carrying on until the end of the turn by default, its negating something "current" will only look at what was current when the effect was applied. Indeed, this is what allows it to suppress the continuous penalties from tokens under the new rules, which it did not before.
The problem with Low Stance not referencing "current" bonuses and thus being warped by the new rules is being addressed and will likely result in Technical Errata being issued for it to add "current" to its text within the next day or so. Brook Cunningham, "Isawa Ochiai xp3 and Low Stance", 28 Dec 2010 - Q: Is setting force and/or chi considered a bonus or a penalty?
A: Yes.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#S ... to_a_value: "To set a stat to a value, give it the smallest possible appropriate bonus or penalty such that it reaches that value." Zen Faulkes, "Bayushi Suboru and Shameful Injury", 6 Jun 2010 - Q: Hi, after this ruling viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81436 I thought I understood how Justly earned victory and Shameful injury worked in regards to the negation of force penalties and bonuses from tokens created by actions until the end of turn.
Now having read the MRP artical on the front page of the L5R.com site, im totally confused and lost.
Please can someone tell me which is which? Because right now there are two different official rulings on this and its thrown my deck into chaos!
This is from the MRP link: "Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury no longer negate the Force bonuses and penalties from tokens created by actions. This is due to the way the new wording interacts with the Comprehensive Rules on negation effects."
This is the ruling: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81436
Justly Earned Victory Text Battle: Target your Personality: Move a target enemy Personality with lower Force or with fewer attachments home. Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Shameful Injury Text Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.
So, what ruling is correct? Please make this the final answer too...
A: The MRP page is not yet comprehensive, and doesn't yet reflect the recent changes to the negation rules that make them more intuitive and consistent with other ongoing effects.
Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury negate force bonuses and penalties from tokens created by actions. Alex Jones, "JEV and shameful injury vs tokens.", 25 Feb 2010 - Q: As a follow up to this thread on Strength of Bamboo and Fosuta: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=81416&start=0
Does this mean that both justly earned victory and shameful injury will negate the effects of poison tokens until the end of the turn as strength of bamboo does to chi death by fosuta (with shameful offering continuing protection from new poison tokens)? Thanks in advance.
Justly Earned Victory: Battle: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties to cards at this battlefield from actions.
Shameful Injury: Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.
A: Your assumption is correct. Since negation is a suppresion of effects, the force penalty effects of poison tokens will be suppressed until the end of the turn by Justly Earned Victory and Shameful Injury. Dan Jacobson, "poison tokens + justly earned victory/shameful injury", 27 Jan 2010 - Q: This is a follow up question to this: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=80458
Similar circumstance, but with a variation that I want to clarify.
Matsu Fumiyo assigns to attack. During a battle she has Shameful Injury targeted at her. Fumiyo is then sent home from the battle with another action. If she were to return to that battlefield, or any battlefield during that turn, would the +2 Force bonus from attacking reapply itself, or does it get negated? Was it ever lost due to her returning home? Thanks.
Shameful Injury Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.
A: As Matsu Fumiyo's +2F is a trait and not an action, Shameful Injury does nothing to it.
However, if Matsu Fumiyo recieved a force bonus, say, from Charge, Shameful injury would negate it, and any further force bonuses (or penalties!) until the end of the turn, regardless of location, as per card text. Dan Jacobson, "force bonuses from traits and Shameful Injury", 11 Dec 2009 - Q: Re: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=80296
Please forgive another Shameful Injury question. I searched and read past posts, but am still confused. There are a number of posts regarding Shameful Injury and a Continuous bonuse/reduction such as those granted by Tokens. The rulings all center around Shameful Injury negating the bonus, but then the bonus reasserts itself. Is this the case for all continuous effects even if they are granted by an action?
For specific examples:
Training Maneuvers Terrain Battle: If you control a Tactician or Scout Personality at the current battlefield: Your Personalities and Followers have +1F while there.
Since the +1F granted is a continuous effect as long as the terrain is in play and I meet the conditions, will the force bonus reassert itself immediately?
Seven Seas Port Port Recon Open: Target a province. Your Mantis Clan Personalities and your Scout Followers have +1F while at that province's battlefield.
Same question. Since the +1F granted is a continuous effect as long as my Mantis Personality is at that battlefield, will the force bonus reassert itself immediately?
Or am I missing that these actions are not continuous effects?
Thank you in advance!
Edit: I think it just clicked. Are the above actions Ongoing effects, and thus would be negated and would not reassert themselves?
A: Those are indeed ongoing effects, and An ongoing effect that is applied “while” some condition is true ends when that condition is no longer true, and takes effect again if the condition becomes true within the stated duration of the effect. Nevertheless, a conditional ongoing effect is a single effect, regardless of how many times it is reapplied. If it is negated or prevented, it remains negated or prevented if the effect is reapplied due to the condition being met anew. Alex Jones, "Shameful Injury + Training Manuvers, Seven Seas Port", 5 Dec 2009 - Q: In a recent game with a friend, a point of contention arose regarding the effects of Shameful Injury. During my Action phase, I'd attached a weapon (a Gumbai-Uchiwa) to my personality (Matsu Benika Exp 2), then declared an attack. In the battle, my opponent played Shameful Injury on Benika. He claimed that Shameful Injury would negate the Force bonus to Benika from the item because it had been attached that turn. I contended that the Force bonus was not due to an action (i.e., Limited, Open, Battle, or Reaction), but an item, and thus would not be affected by Shameful Injury.
Gumbai Uchiwa Tessen * Weapon 3G +2F +0C After this card leaves play: Remove it from the game. Battle: If this card is in your discard pile: Attach it to your target Personality.
Shameful Injury Strategy 0G Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties to him from actions.
A: Bonuses from items are not from actions, and not affected by Shameful Injury.
http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Source_of_effects: "Targeting, costs, effects and actions come 'from,' or are done by, the card where the thing in question is originally physically printed." Zen Faulkes, "Shameful Injury and Gumbai-Uchiwa", 4 Dec 2009 - Q: Demonic Possession:
Battle: Target your unbowed Oni: Target an enemy Personality. Give him -2F after each resolution of an action (including this action) taken during this battle.
My question is this: If I am using Demonic Possession, because it is an ongoing effect, do strategies that negate force penalties and bonuses effect Demonic Possession's ongoing effect?
Example 1:
I use Demonic Possession on enemy Personality. Enemy personality loses gets -2F. Enemy personality uses Shameful Injury (Battle: Even if you control no units at the current battlefield: Negate all current Force bonuses and penalties a target Personality has received from actions. Until the turn ends, negate all new Force bonuses or penalties on him from actions.).
A: Here not only is the initial -2F negated, but each subsequent -2F is also negated, per Shameful Injury's text. Dan Jacobson, "Demonic Possesion vs. Force Penalty Negation strategies", 28 Oct 2009 - Q: Does Shameful Injury negate the Force bonus from Nerve Strike?
A: Well, firstly, Nerve Strike gives a Force penalty, never a bonus.
Second, because Nerve Strike's action does give a penalty, Shameful Injury will indeed negate it.
EDIT: RE, your EDIT:
Shameful Injury is not performed at all, so that effect of Nerve Strike isn't relevant to it.
For "What performs an action?", see here. Brook Cunningham, "Nerve Strike vs. Shameful Injury", 27 Oct 2009 - Q: If my opponent plays Game of Sincerity on my personality, then I play Shameful Injury on my personality, will I have force at resolution?
A: No. There is no rule that "contributing no force" is equivalent to "force penalty." Zen Faulkes, "Game of Sincerity vs Shameful Injury", 11 Aug 2009 - Q: Regarding this ruling and to be clear.
Based on the CE Rules, will the tokens re-assert the penalties immediately? or are they zeroed out? Is this somehow different that with Shameful Injury?
From: "Continuous effects" Continuous effects are those found in non-triggered traits, as well as modifier effects that are not triggered (such as stat modifiers on Items or tokens). [...] If another effect reverses or modifies the continuous effect, the continuous effect does not automatically re-assert itself. Only if the continuous effect ends and begins again, or when the other effect ends, would the continuous effect begin.
From: "Duration and scope of negation effects" Every application of negation is instantaneous. [...] If a type of continuous occurrence is being negated (for example, Force bonuses from a non-triggered trait), then: All continuous occurrences of that type are negated while the negation is in effect, and reassert themselves afterwards. Basically, I want to be sure I understand the rule correctly, thanks.
Note: The last ruling (referenced above) was slightly confusing to me, not sure was the final ruling was.
A: The outcome has not changed with the Celestial Edition comprehensive rules coming online.
Justly Earned Victory specifies no duration, so it is an instantaneous effect. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Duratio ... on_effects: "A negation effect without an explicit duration is instantaneous, rather than lasting until the end of the turn (see below). This is an exception to the rule on duration of ongoing effects.
Tokens are continuous effects. http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Effects#Continuous_effects: "Continuous effects are those found in non-triggered traits, as well as modifier effects that are not triggered (such as stat modifiers on Items or tokens)."
Finally, "An instantaneous negation effect will not suppress a continuous effect."
Justly Earned Victory does nothing to bonuses from tokens. Shameful Injury does nothing to bonuses on tokens already present. Zen Faulkes, "Justly Earned Victory and Tokens", 4 Aug 2009 - Q: If I use 3 copies of Shameful Injury on the same target, do the 2nd and 3rd copy count as successful?
A: No.
Once something has been prevented, a second or third prevention has no effect. It reminds me of trying to give a card a keyword that it already has, which also doesn't work. http://rules.l5r.com/Card_features#Keywords: "Effects that grant a keyword to a card that already has it do not give it an extra copy of the keyword." Zen Faulkes, "Successfully Resolved Actions", 27 Jul 2009 - Q: Would Shameful Injury... negate the force bonus(?)
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of summoning and negative force bonus", 24 Jul 2009 - Q: Will Shameful Injury stop the doubling from Wedge?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Wedge and Shameful injury?", 17 Sep 2008
