Rules Q&A
- Q: B. Opposing for Formations
My opponent attack my last Province with Atarasi. I defend with two Samurai both with Follower tokens attached. I have a bowed Shiba Danjuro with an attached unbowed non-token Follower at home. I play Endless Horde Question B: Can I use his Battle action bowing Danjuro’s Follower?
3. Yes. You have presence, meet relevance, cost could be paid with a non-token Follower, and Atarasi is opposed.
4. No. The Follower performing the Endless Horde must be at the current battle and opposing Atarasi
A: The answer is "4," for the same reason that the answer was "2" above. The card with the Action can't be at a battle, and the ability references a card which can be at the battle, so "opposing" refers to that card (the follower paying the cost). Martin Lund, "Rules for 20 January 2005", 24 Jan 2005 - Q: Jeff just a quick question. "Shiba Danjuro Phoenix Clan Yojimbo * Samurai Soul of Shiba Raigen Reaction: When an action targets one of your Shugenja, bow Danjuro to redirect that action to Danjuro, if legal. If the Shugenja is in an army, Danjuro must be in the same army to take this action."
the part that Danjuro said that he need be legal to redirect to himself are aplied when?
A: When you want to use his ability. Martin Lund, "Rules for 29 June 2004", 2 Jul 2004 - Q: Is the effect of attaching the Ruby XP (not allowing the personality to straighten) considered an action (because it's an action to play the Ruby) or not (because it's really just an effect of attachment?) Moreover, can I redirect the effect with Shiba Danjuro or cancel it with Balance in Nothingness?
A: Targeting a bowed Personality, other than the one Ruby of Iuchiban is attached to, is an additional cost to play the Ruby.
Keeping the Personality from straightening is an effect of the Ruby's Trait. It has nothing to do with the Action of attaching the Ruby.
You normally couldn't redirect the effect with Danjuro, because he wouldn't be bowed when you announced his ability, thus an illegal target.
You could redirect the targeting to another bowed Personality you control with say, Turn of Fortune.
You could Cancel the action of attaching Ruby of Iuchiban XP. with Balance in Nothingness. The Ruby would be returned to the player's hand (Diamond Edition Rulebook, page 72). Martin Lund, "Rules for 22 June 2004", 25 Jun 2004 - Q: i'm almost positive that Balance in Nothingness could be used to cancel anything redirected to Shiba Danjuro through his own action. but i haven't seen or heard of anyone using it, which makes me suspicious.
redirecting actions is a big deal, but canceling them is even better. it seems like a good combo.
A: Oh great. Now you've got me paranoid.
Unless I missed something obvious, that looks like a clean play. Martin Lund, "Rules for 21 June 2004", 25 Jun 2004 - Q: 1 - I target my opponent's shugenja with a Iaijutsu Challenge. He bows Shiba Danjuro to change the target. Can I play Keen Eye to cancel this?
A: "An action creating a challenge must begin resolve before anything can happen "during" the challenge. E.g., the action can be canceled, even if reactions are not allowed during challenges. [JA, 16 December 2001, 2 March 2004]" (Accumulated Rulings, "Duels")
This same logic applies here. You select both targets for Iaijutsu Challenge before the action begins to resolve. Danjuro's Reaction is played then - well before Keen Eye can be legally played. Martin Lund, "Rules for 11 April 2004", 13 Apr 2004 - Q: I have a follower on Shiba Danjuro.
My opponent wants to hit one of the shugenja in Danjuro's army with a ranged attack.
Can I redirect the RA to Danjuro, ie is he a legal target? I don't think so, since he can't be targeted with a ranged attack until his follower is removed.
A: Well, sure. If Danjuro has a follower, then he is inelligable to be targeted by a Ranged Attack, unless said Ranged Attack can target a Personality with attached followers, of course. Martin Lund, "Rules for 4 April 2004", 6 Apr 2004 - Q: This just occurred to me,and I'm trying to verify it.
When the egg of P'an Ku enters play,it becomes a copy of any one personality in play. That means that the egg has to target said personality, right?
A: Right. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 19 March 2004", 20 Mar 2004 - Q: If so,and the personality is a shugenja, then Shiba Danjuro can redirect the whole action unto himself, effectively resulting in an egged Danjuro-probably
A: Right. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 19 March 2004", 20 Mar 2004 - Q: I am playing Scorpion[...]
A: What a shock, Calvin! I'd never have guessed. ;) Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: and my opponent is playing Phoenix in Morning Glory Castle. My opponent has a bunch of unbowed peeps including one unbowed Shugenja and one unbowed Shiba Danjuro. I play Unrequited Love on one of my opponent's Shugenja. My opponent reacts with Danjuro[.] When Danjuro bows to redirect the action, Danjuro is now BOWED. Is it still legal to target him with Unrequited Love?
A: Yes. He could have been legal targeted with the action originally (he was unbowed), so it can be redirected to him. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 13 November 2003", 13 Nov 2003 - Q: If the The First Oni (inexp) uses his ability on a unbowed shugenja, can Shiba Danjuro jump in the way?
Will the action become illegal if he does? (see rule below)
Accumulated Rulings: Actions and abilities wrote:
If one or more of an action's targets become illegal between when they are chosen and when the action begins to resolve, that action will not affect those targets. This remains true even if they become illegal, then return to being legal. [JA, 15 June 2004; 22 June 2004]
A: Danjuro's Reaction will be the Action that has effects that fail to resolve.
You elect to use his ability to redirect (he's currently a legal target to redirect to). You bow him (he's no longer a legal target to redirect to). You try to resolve the effect. You can't redirect to an illegal target (bowed Danjuro) according to Page 74 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook, so that effect (redirection) is Negated.
When page 74 talks about "something else it could have targeted originally," it does not mean that you look back in time to find all the cards that could have been chosen then. It means you use the same requirements for targeting that existed back then on the cards as they exist right now.
Next player gets an opportunity to React to the First Oni's ability.
All players pass on Reactions.
The First Oni gleefully eats your Shugenja while Danjuro falls flat on his face. Martin Lund, "First Oni and Danjuro", 5 Mar 2005 - Q: under diamond rules, can Keen Eye be used to cancel redirection of a duel (like Shiba Danjuro or Turn of Fate)? In other words, is the targeting already part of the challenge or does the challenge start after targeting is done?
A: Unfortunately, since Diamond doesn't have stringently defined steps to resolving an action, it would come down to the exact wording of the action creating the challenge/duel. I think most of the era were probably worded so the targeting happens during the challenge, but there may be outliers. Brook Cunningham, "Sun and Moon #rules-questions", 14 Oct 2024
