Rules Q&A
- Q: If, during the Action Phase, Ninube Onchi were to target Asako Chukage to remove one of his abilities and Shiba Sansesuke was to activate his Reaction to redirect Onchi's action onto himself, would Sansesuke successfully interrupt the targeted Shugenja and place the effect on himself? Or is Sansesuke not a "legal target" because his own ability would be turned off? Thank you.
Shiba Sansesuke: Reaction: When an action would target your Shugenja at Sansesuke's location, bow Sansesuke: The action targets him instead, if legal. http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=6803
Ninube Onchi: Open: Target a Personality: Remove one of his abilities (until the turn ends). http://imperialassembly.com/oracle/#cardid=5590
A: As long as Sanesuke's action is legal when you announce it, it will resolve. In this situation Onchi will remove an ability that has already been used, from Sanesuke. Jon Palmer, "Shiba Sansesuke vs Ninube Onchi", 23 Dec 2012 - Q: Being and avid Phoenix player I have had some timing issues with Sansesuke. If I have out Sansesuke and Isawa Mitsuko XP and my opponent is playing Midday Shadow Court. (On my turn) I play a spell on Mitsuko during the action phase. My opponent targets Mitsuko with the Midday's open action,. I bow Sansesuke as a reaction to make him the target instead. The question arises, Do I then lose an honor and have Sansesuke Dishonored because he reacted. The timing of the reaction is what is comes down to. Does his reaction end before the text of Midday comes into effect? We had a similar question regarding Sansesuke vs Hotako. But we figured that his reaction interupts her ability and so he can pull the target onto himself but then after that couldn't perfrom any actions. With this I wasn't sure if the act of pulling the targeting to himself trigger Middays ability. I would say no because the action he performs is to become the target and ends, And this target text is listed before the ":" on Midday's ability. So the Sansesuke's action would resolve and then Midday's ability is imposed on him. So any action after that point that he performs such as to straighten would trigger Midday's text. Here is the revelvant text.
Midday Shadow Court - When a Lobby action checks Family Honor, your Honor is treated as 20 points higher. Political Open: Even if this card is bowed, target another player's Personality: After the next time this turn he is assigned, or an action that he performed ends, dishonor him and his controller loses 1 Honor. Shiba Sansesuke Reaction: When an action would target your Shugenja at Sansesuke's location, bow Sansesuke: The action targets him instead, if legal.
A: No, Sanesuke's (re)action fully ends before Midday Shadow Court's effect is upon him. Unless he assigns or performs another action this turn, the Midday Shadow Court dishonor/honor loss will not happen. Jon Palmer, "Shiba Sansesuke vs Midday Shadow Court", 2 Dec 2012 - Q: Chikushudo's Trickery Open: Choose one or two of your performing unbowed Nonhuman Spirit Personalities, target another player's unbowed Personality, bow this Shugenja, and destroy this card: Create a battlefield. Negate all movement to it. Assign the target to attack there; he will not be destroyed during the battle's Combat Segment. Assign the performing Spirits to defend there. Fight a battle there.
Shiba Sansesuke Reaction: When an action would target your Shugenja at Sansesuke's location, bow Sansesuke: The action targets him instead, if legal.
Ok, I'd like to know, if Sansesuke can jump in front of shugenja targeted by Chikushudo Trickery and take it on himself? I see a few possible options in her: 1) He can redirect this action on him, and will assign to attack bowed 2) He can redirect this action on him, but will not assign as he is bowed as cost of redirecting 3) He cannot as "another player's unbowed Personality" is required and in moment of redirecting Sansesuke is already bowed because this is a cost -> Target shuggie with CT, SS uses reaction, bows and is not legal target. It's a bit unclear to me now, so I'd be grateful for answer.
A: The redirect fails for the reason you give in 3) - Chikushudo Trickery requires an unbowed target, and Shiba Sansesuke must bow as a cost of his action. Alex Jones, "Chikushudo Trickery vs Shiba Sansesuke", 13 Nov 2012 - Q: Shiba Sansesuke:
Say he has a follower and an opponent makes a ranged attack against a shugenja at his location, can he bow and have the ranged target him, or does the follower make him an illegal target. If it can redirect to him, does it redirect to the follower?
Thanks,
Justin
A: Nothing is keeping you from using his Reaction as a response to a Ranged Attack even if Shiba Sansesuke has a Follower.
However, because he does have the Follower he is not a legal target for the Ranged Attack and the redirection effect will fail, leaving the original target still the target of the Ranged Attack.
The only exception to this would be any Ranged Attacks that can target Personalities with Followers, such as Strategic Strike. Ben Higgins, "Do followers on Sansesuke nullify his ability for ranged?", 18 Apr 2012
