Rules Q&A
- Q: Recently in a game I had Shiba's Guidance out and took a province. After resolving all my onboard traits/reactions (dropping rings, and playing Introspections) I drew into another Introspection with the guidance. Now my question is am I able to play said Introspection? My opponent and I decided yes as the card draw from guidance isn't a reaction thus the timing window for Introspection hadn't closed yet. Any help would be awesome thanks.
A: Actually, the answer is no. The card draw from Shiba's Guidance is a separately timed effect, so when it resolves, your window to playing Introspection off the Rings has already passed. Jon Palmer, "Shiba's Guidance Timing", 8 Jan 2013 - Q: I'm a Phoenix player with Shiba's Guidance in play. I win a battle at an opponent's province and destroy it, drawing a card. If the card I draw is Tales of Dishonor, can I then play its reaction or has the trigger already passed?
Shiba's Guidance xp After a battle resolution ends in which a Phoenix Clan player destroyed one or more provinces or enemy cards: He draws a card.
Tales of Dishonor Political Reaction: After the resolution of a battle at a province, if you destroyed any enemy units or a province in that resolution: The battle's loser loses 4 Honor.
Thanks
A: Yes, you can play it. Traits trigger before Reactions (see here). Brook Cunningham, "Tales of Dishonor and Shiba's Guidance xp", 6 Jan 2012 - Q: So you would have to pay for them for cheap if you were below the honor requirements via using Shiba's Guidance?
A: No, you would be completely unable to use Shiba's Guidance to bring a Personality into play whose Honor Requirement you were not meeting.
The options to reduce or increase the Gold Cost of one of your Clan's Personalities, in lieu of gaining their Personal Honor or in order to ignore their Honor Requirement, is only available during the Dynasty Phase. Brook Cunningham, "Shiba's Guidance and Honour Requirements", 21 Dec 2010 - Q: It only occured to me the other day but the battle action on Shiba's Guidance doesn't say that you may ignore the honour requirement of the personality you target (and I don't think that it comes under the 'ignoring costs' text). I know think that you have to meet the personality's honour requirement; is this correct?
Shiba's Guidance
Battle/Open: If you are a Phoenix Clan player, discard this card: Bring your target honorably dead Phoenix Clan Personality into play in your home or at the current battlefield, ignoring costs.
A: Honor requirements are not costs.
Honor requirements are always checked when bringing a Personality into play: http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_types#Play ... sonalities Zen Faulkes, "Shiba's Guidance and Honour Requirements", 21 Dec 2010 - Q: i couldn't find anything in the forum about this. 2 phoenix players are facing each other and one player's shiba's guidance comes into play. does the trait on the guidance also count for the other phoenix player's personalities?
Shiba's Guidance Kami-Unique
Phoenix Clan Personalities have +1F while their controller controls any shugenja.
Battle/Open: If you are a Phoenix Clan player, discard this card: Bring your target honorably dead Phoenix Clan Personality into play in your home or at the current battlefield, ignoring costs.
A: The trait does not refer to "your" Phoenix Clan personalities, so both players would get the bonus.
Similar reasoning applies to Hida's Guidance and Akodo's Guidance! Dan Jacobson, "Shiba's Guidance and other Phoenix Clan players", 9 Apr 2010 - Q: Does Houhou's "if she entered play, Gain 3 Honor" apply only to entering play with her Limited ability? Or does it happen if she enters play outside the Dynasty Phase with the use of a card like Shiba's Guidance? For example, if I am in combat and an opponent attacks me and I use Shiba's Guidance to bring Houhou back into play in the current battle, do I gain her 3 honor for enter play as printed on the card? Thank you.
A: Houhou's ability is Limited: If Houhou is honorably dead: She rises from the ashes. Bring her into play, paying 4 less Gold. If she entered play, gain 3 Honor (this is an Honor gain for entering play).
The honour gain is not a separate trait, it's an effect of the action. If you bring her into play using a different action, you won't gain 3 Honour from her ability.
Note that within the text box of a card, the order of the four parts is fixed: Keywords, Traits, Abilities, Flavour. Once you get to an ability, all the rest is abilities or flavour. Alex Jones, "Shiba's Guidance + Houhou", 19 Mar 2010 - Q: Hypothetical: I am a Phoenix player with Shiba's Guidance in play. My shugenja performs ritual of summoning (permanently sets his force to 5). I discard Shiba's Guidance for its effect. At this point my Shugenja who performed Ritual of Summoning has a force of 4, correct?
A: Yes. See http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#S ... to_a_value.
Many people intuitively think that "permanently set a stat to a value" means "permanently set a base stat to a value." It doesn't (unless the card were to actually say "base"). Zen Faulkes, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 14 Feb 2010 - Q: I'm having a hard time sorting through all the thread on Ritual of summoning. So if this is answered someone else please just point me to it since i cant find it.
I have Ningen in play with Shiba's Guidance. I cast Ritual of summoning on Ningen and use it. Is his force now 5? or is it 7?
thanks,
Jeffy No Oni
A: Setting a stat to a certain value implies that you are giving an appropriate stat bonus or penalty to their current stat, with all bonuses and penalties to that stat accounted for.
See http://rules.l5r.com/CE_Card_features#Setting_stats_to_a_value for more details.
Shiba Ningen xp2's Force will be 5. Dan Jacobson, "Ritual of Summoning + Static Force bonus", 13 Feb 2010 - Q: Ok, I recently had an odd thing happen. I had an opposed army at a battlefield and I needed to bring a dead personality into play at home. I read Shiba's Guidance which I had in play. It never specifies that I can't bring a guy into play in my home when in a battle. The rule of location, by my understanding, only governs cards in units. Since a dead personality is not in a unit, I don't think it interferes. So, my question is this... Can Shiba's Guidance be used to bring a personality into play in your home even during a battle?
Shiba's Guidance Phoenix Clan Personalities have +1F while their controller controls any Shugenja. Battle/Open: If you are a Phoenix Clan player, discard this card: Bring your target honorably dead Phoenix Clan Personality into play in your home or at the current battlefield, ignoring costs.
A: Neither the main text nor the Glossary specify that a Personality must be in play to constitute a unit.
However, the Rule of Location for a card in a unit merely states that it "must be at the current battlefield to be targeted by a Battle action." There is no requirement that the battle or battlefield be affected in any way. Shiba's Guidance explicitly specifies where the Personality it targets must be, so it ignores the Rule of Location: you may bring the Personality into play in your home even when using its ability for a Battle action. Alex Jones, "Shiba's Gudiance and the Rule of Presence/Location", 21 Sep 2009 - Q: I just want to make sure this doesnt work.
Rule of Presence/Location Exception: Battle actions that say they move a unit to the current battlefield are legal to take, regardless of Presence and Location, if the rules of Presence and Location would be satisfied with the unit there.
Am I correct in thinking that because Shiba's Guidance does not specify 'move' it doesn't qualify for the exception if i have no units in the current battlefield?
A: You are correct. This changed with Samurai Edition: It is no longer legal to create a unit in a battlefield where you control no units. Alex Jones, "Shiba's Gudiance and the Rule of Presence/Location", 16 Sep 2009
