Rules Q&A
- Q: Essentially: Does using an Item attatched to a personality to perform a Ranged Attack count as the Personality performing the Ranged Attack like a Spell? Can Shinjo Xushen (non-exp.) with a Daikyu do any or all of the following when assigned as infantry?
1. Bow the Daikyu for a Ranged 4 Attack. 2. Bow the Daiky and himself for a combined Ranged 7 or 8 Attack?
My thoughts are that they are not performed by the personality, but soley by the Item, I just want confirmation. Thanks.
A: Keep in mind that "from" and "performed by" are not the same thing. Actions are "from" the card with the Action, regardless of who performs them.
As for who does the Performing, look at criteria #2 on page 71 of the Diamond Edition Rulebook: "Actions on an Item, Spell, or Ancestor are performed by its Personality."
Xushen performs the Actions of his attached Items. Any Ranged Attacks from Xushen's items benefit from his trait.
As for combining Ranged Attacks, the only care where the Ranged Attack is from, not who performs it. Since Daikyu is a different card than Xushen, they can be combined. Since Daikyu doesn't require you to bow Xushen, you can pay all the costs. That means you can bow them both for a combined Ranged 6 attack, or 8 if Xushen assigned as Infantry. Martin Lund, "Rules for 3 September 2004", 7 Sep 2004 - Q: Jeff, a few days ago a question was posted about Shinjo Xushen with a Daikyu. It was ruled that he could only create a ranged 7 if he assigned as infantry. However, after reading your latest ruling and reading the H&E rule sheet that says that the action on the item is performed by the personality, that says to me that Xushen is not only creating his own ranged 4, but a 3+1 from the Daikyu for a potential 8. Can you clarify this please?
A: A combined ranged attack is one attack (and one action). There will be only one +1 bonus. Jeff Alexander, "post for 25 April 2003", 26 Apr 2003 - Q: Shinjo Xushen has equipped a Dai-Kyu, and assigned as Infantry. Can he combine with his weapon for a range 8?
A: No; 7. He is only performing one Ranged Attack (combined), so it only gains +1 strength. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 April 2003", 23 Apr 2003 - Q: I have a Shugenja in my fief. My opponent attacks with Shinjo Xushen. In the battle he tries to use No Hiding Place with Xushen against my Shugenja. I play Fall on your Knees. Must Xushen bow?
A: Oh, great. More pre-emptive weirdness.
I think it depends on whether there is a legal target for the Ranged Attack without the use of No Hiding Place. You can't take an action (like a Ranged Attack) without a legal target (No Hiding Places changes the legal target, obviously). But again, you must have announced the Ranged Attack to use No Hiding Place, an you normally can't abandon actions halfway through them (barring cost or targeting problems).
I'm getting less comfortable with these "play this Reaction before your action" rulings, though, and look forward to hearing Jeff's take on them. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 16 April 2003, Part 1", 16 Apr 2003 - Q: 3)I assign Shinjo Xushen with a Daikyu attached during infantry phase is the strength of the ranged attack form the daikyu a 3 or a four?
A: Four. Xushen's trait uses the word "perform", and by the rulebook, a Personality "performs" his Items' actions. Jeff Alexander, "post for 30-31 January 2003", 1 Feb 2003 - Q: Greetings! Does Xushen's ability affect items attached to him like Fox Nagamaki and Daikyu?
"If Xushen assigns during Infantry Maneuvers, he gains +1F and +1 strength to any ranged attacks he performs until the end of the attack phase."
A: Since he uses the term "perform", it would indeed apply to any ranged attacks on his Items, by the latest rulebook. Jeff Alexander, "post for 18 April 2002", 18 Apr 2002 - Q: Can I share Koutetsu Sessou to non Lion clan personality (example : share to Shinjo Xushen) ? (Koutetsu Sessou Armor • Unique This Personality has a minimum Chi of 5. Can only attach to a Lion Clan Personality. This personality has the Tactician keyword. Battle: Move one of the Defender's target Personalities to the current battlefield. If he moved, straighten him and gain 2 Honor.)
based on Comprehensive Rules, Attach: "Transferring a card from one unit to another is not attaching."
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T#Transfer
Transfer
To take an attachment card from one Personality and add it to the unit of another, different Personality.
A player does not need to pay the card's costs when transferring it, but does need to meet requirements and restrictions of attachment. Nonetheless, the transferred card is not attaching to the new Personality for purposes of things that are triggered by attaching, and is not entering play.
