Rules Q&A
- Q: Kakita Totani (with a +2F weapon) and Shinjo Xushen XP assign in the infantry phase. Some 4 stat shuggie with Kuro's Fire blocks. Shuggie makes a 8F ranged attack and targets Totani, 'knowing' that she will lower it by 2 and Xushen will lower it by 2 more. Then, as a reaction, the RA gets retargetted to Xushen.
What happens? Does Xushen get: Hit by a RA8 Hit by a RA6 Hit by nothing, as the attack is now illegal.
A: There is nothing illegal about it. It is just like if someone used Tsuruchi Technique to raise the value of the Ranged Attack above the maximum you could choose to produce.
Beyond that, being able to redirect off of Totani is debateable. Once you declare the RA's starting strength, if Totani is the only target that makes the Action compliant, she's the only legal target. You can't redirect Actions to targets the original controller can't legally target with the Action. Martin Lund, "Rules for 13 Jul 2004", 15 Jul 2004 - Q: #2: Why is it *not* the case that: If bowing a personality to produce a Range N attack against a personality in Shinjo Xushen Exp's army; that I must declare the attack to be N+2, because it is the only way I can actually produce the Range N?
A: You don't get a choice about the declared strength of a Ranged Attack unless the card itself gives you a choice. When the Ranged Attack is produced, on resolution of the effect, it will be produced at a Strength based on the base strength plus or minus any ensuing modifiers. Martin Lund, "Rules for 1 May 2004", 4 May 2004 - Q: Example: a 2/3 shuggie can produce a ranged 6 attack targetting Shinjo Xushen xp since he lowers RAs by 2.
A: No. The Shugenja never produces a ranged 6 attack. When Kuro's Fire produces the RA, it is Ranged 4. You announce it as ranged 6. It comes out as ranged 4. Martin Lund, "Rules for 16 and 17 April 2004", 18 Apr 2004 - Q: This question came up at a tournament this past weekend, and I'd like to verify that the ruling that was made was correct:
If Shinjo Xushen xp is in a battle, and has assigned as infantry (lowering the strength of all ranged attacks by 2), does this have any effect on the total strength allowed to the caster of a Kuro's Fire?
No. Kuro's Fire applies to the total adjusted strength, as it does not say anything about using base values.
That is, if a 4/4 shugenja has Kuro's Fire attached and targets Xushen with the first ranged attack, does that attack use 6 or 4 of the total force that the shugenja can cast for?
If he hits Xushen with a final strength 4 ranged attack, it uses up 4.
Additionally, if the shugenja were a 2/3, could they target Xushen at all?
Sure, he can target Xushen. He can always target Xushen.
Now, if you're asking if he can produce a ranged attack large enough to kill Xushen, the answer is still "yes".
This is a bit confusing to me. Kuro's Fire basically allows you to totally ignore Xushen's ranged attack reduction totally? I can understand how you are reading the card, but I don't think that's the only interpretation that could be drawn by reading the text on both cards.
A: It's not the only interpretation. Unfortunately the other is only consistent overall if Kuro's Fire is played as though it said it counted its total BASE ranged attack strengths, before other cards modified them. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 8 March 2004", 9 Mar 2004 - Q: This question came up at a tournament this past weekend, and I'd like to verify that the ruling that was made was correct:

A: No. Kuro's Fire applies to the total adjusted strength, as it does not say anything about using base values. Jeff Alexander, "rules for 2-3 March 2004", 4 Mar 2004 - Q: If an Ambush is used together with Shinjo Xushen exp., does he assign as Infantry or Cavallery? Or, more general, can the assignment segment be choosen?
A: Yes. Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 7 December 2003", 7 Dec 2003 - Q: When Kuros fire is used to preform multiple ranged attacks, would Shinjo Xushen (Exp)'s ability affect both attacks reducing them both by 2 (thus 2 ranged 0 attacks) if hes assigned in inf or reduce the possible total ranged strength by 2 (thus a possbility for one ranged 2 or two ranged 1 attacks)?
A: Aside: Xushen's effect here is a trait, not an ability.
The former (card text). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 29 November 2003, Part 2", 30 Nov 2003 - Q: [D]oes Xushen's trait lower EACH of them by 2, or just the combined ranged attack?
A: The combined attack (Gold Edition rulebook, pg. 63). Zen Faulkes, "Rules for 22 September 2003, Part 2", 23 Sep 2003 - Q: Can I share Koutetsu Sessou to non Lion clan personality (example : share to Shinjo Xushen) ? (Koutetsu Sessou Armor • Unique This Personality has a minimum Chi of 5. Can only attach to a Lion Clan Personality. This personality has the Tactician keyword. Battle: Move one of the Defender's target Personalities to the current battlefield. If he moved, straighten him and gain 2 Honor.)
based on Comprehensive Rules, Attach: "Transferring a card from one unit to another is not attaching."
A: http://rules.l5r.com/Glossary_T#Transfer
Transfer
To take an attachment card from one Personality and add it to the unit of another, different Personality.
A player does not need to pay the card's costs when transferring it, but does need to meet requirements and restrictions of attachment. Nonetheless, the transferred card is not attaching to the new Personality for purposes of things that are triggered by attaching, and is not entering play.
